The Queen's Croquet-Ground

A large rose-tree stood near the entrance of the garden: the roses growing on it were white, but there were three gardeners at it, busily painting them red.

Vicino all'entrata del giardino c'era un grande rosaio: le rose che ci crescevano erano bianche, ma c'erano tre giardinieri indaffarati a dipingerle di rosso.

Alice thought this a very curious thing, and she went nearer to watch them, and just as she came up to them she heard one of them say, "Look out now, Five! Don't go splashing paint over me like that!"

Alice pensò che la cosa era molto strana e andò più vicino per guardarli; e giunta nei pressi ne sentì uno che diceva: "occhio, Cinque! mi stai schizzando tutto di vernice!"

"I couldn't help it," said Five, in a sulky tone; "Seven jogged my elbow."

"Non è stata colpa mia" disse il Cinque con tono imbronciato; " il Sette mi ha urtato il gomito".

On which Seven looked up and said, "That's right, Five! Always lay the blame on others!"

Al che il Sette sollevò lo sguardo e disse: "E bravo Cinque! La colpa è sempre degli altri!"

"You'd better not talk!" said Five. "I heard the Queen say only yesterday you deserved to be beheaded!"

"Tu faresti meglio a starti zitto!" disse il Cinque. "Solo ieri ho sentito la Regina che diceva che meritavi di essere decapitato".

"What for?" said the one who had spoken first.

"E perché?" disse quello che aveva parlato per primo.

"That's none of your business, Two!" said Seven.

"Non sono affari tuoi, Due!" disse il Sette.

"Yes, it is his business!" said Five, "and I'll tell him... it was for bringing the cook tulip-roots instead of onions."

"Sì che sono affari suoi!" disse il Cinque, "e glielo dico io il perché... perché ha portato alla cuoca i bulbi di tulipano al posto delle cipolle".

Seven flung down his brush, and had just begun "Well, of all the unjust things..." when his eye chanced to fall upon Alice, as she stood watching them, and he checked himself suddenly: the others looked round also, and all of them bowed low.

Il Sette scaraventò il pennello per terra e stava già dicendo "Beh, di tutte le ingiustizie..." quando lo sguardo gli cadde su Alice, che li osservava, e tacque di colpo: gli altri si guardarono intorno e tutti quanti fecero un profondo inchino.

"Would you tell me," said Alice, a little timidly, "why you are painting those roses?"

"Vi spiacerebbe dirmi" disse Alice un po' timidamente, "perché pitturate quelle rose?"

Five and Seven said nothing, but looked at Two.

Il Cinque e il Sette non dissero niente, ma guardarono il Due.

Two began in a low voice, "Why the fact is, you see, Miss, this here ought to have been a red rose-tree, and we put a white one in by mistake; and if the Queen was to find it out, we should all have our heads cut off, you know.

Il Due incominciò a bassa voce: "be', il fatto è, vede, signorina, che questo qui avrebbe dovuto essere un rosaio di rose rosse e noi per sbaglio ne abbiamo piantato uno di rose bianche; e se la Regina dovesse scoprirlo, sa, ci farebbe tagliare la testa a tutti.

So you see, Miss, we're doing our best, afore she comes, to..."

Perciò vede, signorina, stiamo facendo del nostro meglio, prima che arrivi, per..."

At this moment Five, who had been anxiously looking across the garden, called out "The Queen! The Queen!" and the three gardeners instantly threw themselves flat upon their faces.

In quel momento il Cinque, che aveva continuato a guardare ansiosamente dall'altra parte del giardino, gridò: "la Regina! La Regina!"; e immediatamente i tre giardinieri si buttarono faccia a terra.

There was a sound of many footsteps, and Alice looked round, eager to see the Queen.

Ci fu un rumore di numerosi passi e Alice si guardò intorno impaziente di vedere la Regina.

First came ten soldiers carrying clubs; these were all shaped like the three gardeners, oblong and flat, with their hands and feet at the corners: next the ten courtiers; these were ornamented all over with diamonds, and walked two and two, as the soldiers did.

Per primi comparvero dieci soldati armati di manganelli; avevano tutti la sagoma dei tre giardinieri, oblunga e piatta, con le mani e i piedi agli angoli; poi i dieci cortigiani: questi erano tutti decorati di quadri e camminavano a due a due, come i soldati.

After these came the royal children; there were ten of them, and the little dears came jumping merrily along hand in hand, in couples: they were all ornamented with hearts.

Dopo di questi venivano gli infanti reali: c'e n'erano dieci, e i cari pargoletti avanzavano saltellando allegramente mano nella mano, in coppia, e erano tutti decorati di cuori.

Next came the guests, mostly Kings and Queens, and among them Alice recognised the White Rabbit: it was talking in a hurried nervous manner, smiling at everything that was said, and went by without noticing her.

Poi venivano gli ospiti, per lo più Re e Regine, e tra di essi Alice riconobbe il coniglio bianco: parlava in modo concitato e nervoso, sorridendo a tutto quanto si diceva e transitò senza notarla.

Then followed the Knave of Hearts, carrying the King's crown on a crimson velvet cushion; and, last of all this grand procession, came THE KING AND QUEEN OF HEARTS.

Poi seguiva il Fante di Cuori, che portava la corona del Re su un cuscino di velluto cremisi; e, in coda a questo magnificente corteo, apparvero IL RE E LA REGINA DI CUORI.

Alice was rather doubtful whether she ought not to lie down on her face like the three gardeners, but she could not remember ever having heard of such a rule at processions; «and besides, what would be the use of a procession,» thought she, «if people had all to lie down upon their faces, so that they couldn't see it?»

Alice era in dubbio se stendersi bocconi per terra come i tre giardinieri, ma non ricordava di aver mai sentito di una simile regola ai cortei; «e inoltre, a che serve un corteo» pensava, «se tutta la gente deve stare faccia a terra senza poterlo vedere?»

So she stood still where she was, and waited.

Così rimase dov'era e aspettò.

When the procession came opposite to Alice, they all stopped and looked at her, and the Queen said severely "Who is this?"

Quando il corteo arrivò davanti ad Alice, tutti si fermarono e la guardarono e la Regina disse severamente "chi è quella lì?»

She said it to the Knave of Hearts, who only bowed and smiled in reply.

Lo disse al Fante di Cuori, che per tutta risposta s'inchinò e sorrise.

"Idiot!" said the Queen, tossing her head impatiently; and, turning to Alice, she went on, "What's your name, child?"

"Idiota!" disse la Regina scuotendo la testa spazientita; e rivolgendosi ad Alice, continuò: "come ti chiami, bambina?"

"My name is Alice, so please your Majesty," said Alice very politely; but she added, to herself, "Why, they're only a pack of cards, after all. I needn't be afraid of them!"

"Mi chiamo Alice, a Vostra Maestà piacendo" disse Alice molto garbatamente; ma aggiungendo tra sé e sé, "santo cielo, sono solo un mazzo di carte, in fondo. Non c'è da aver paura".

"And who are these?" said the Queen, pointing to the three gardeners who were lying round the rosetree; for, you see, as they were lying on their faces, and the pattern on their backs was the same as the rest of the pack, she could not tell whether they were gardeners, or soldiers, or courtiers, or three of her own children.

"E chi sono questi?" disse la Regina, indicando i tre giardinieri stesi bocconi intorno al rosaio; perché, vedete, giacendo a faccia sotto, ed essendo il disegno sulle loro schiene lo stesso del resto del mazzo, ella non avrebbe potuto dire se erano giardinieri, soldati, cortigiani, oppure tre dei suoi figli.

"How should I know?" said Alice, surprised at her own courage. "It's no business of mine."

"Come faccio a saperlo?" disse Alice, sorpresa del suo stesso coraggio. "Non è mica affar mio".

The Queen turned crimson with fury, and, after glaring at her for a moment like a wild beast, screamed "Off with her head! Off..."

La Regina diventò paonazza dalla rabbia e, dopo averla fulminata con lo sguardo per un momento, urlò "Via la sua testa! Via..."

"Nonsense!" said Alice, very loudly and decidedly, and the Queen was silent.

"Sciocchezze!" disse Alice, con voce forte e decisa; e la Regina ammutolì.

The King laid his hand upon her arm, and timidly said "Consider, my dear: she is only a child!"

Il Re le posò la mano sul braccio e disse timidamente: "tieni conto, mia cara, che è solo una bambina!"

The Queen turned angrily away from him, and said to the Knave "Turn them over!"

La Regina si scostò da lui furibonda e disse al Fante: "girali sottosopra!"

The Knave did so, very carefully, with one foot.

Il Fante eseguì, molto attentamente, con un piede.

"Get up!" said the Queen, in a shrill, loud voice, and the three gardeners instantly jumped up, and began bowing to the King, the Queen, the royal children, and everybody else.

"In piedi!" disse la Regina con voce forte e stridula, e i tre giardinieri scattarono in piedi all'istante e incominciarono a fare inchini al Re, alla Regina, agli infanti reali e a chiunque altro.

"Leave off that!" screamed the Queen. "You make me giddy." And then, turning to the rose-tree, she went on, What have you been doing here?"

"Piantatela!" gridò la Regina. "Mi fate girare la testa". E poi, volgendosi verso il rosaio, continuò: "Che facevate costì?"

"May it please your Majesty," said Two, in a very humble tone, going down on one knee as he spoke, "we were trying..."

"A Vostra Maestà piacendo" disse il Due, in tono molto umile, inginocchiandosi su un ginocchio mentre parlava, "cercavamo..."

"I see!" said the Queen, who had meanwhile been examining the roses.

"Lo vedo!" disse la Regina, che nel frattempo aveva esaminato le rose.

"Off with their heads!" and the procession moved on, three of the soldiers remaining behind to execute the unfortunate gardeners, who ran to Alice for protection.

"Via le loro teste!" e il corteo riprese la marcia, meno tre soldati rimasti indietro per giustiziare gli sventurati giardinieri, che corsero da Alice per farsi proteggere.

"You shan't be beheaded!" said Alice, and she put them into a large flower-pot that stood near.

"Nessuno vi decapiterà!" disse Alice, e li mise in un grosso vaso di fiori lì vicino.

The three soldiers wandered about for a minute or two, looking for them, and then quietly marched off after the others.

I tre soldati gironzolarono per un paio di minuti in cerca di essi e poi si accodarono silenziosamente agli altri.

"Are their heads off?" shouted the Queen.

"Le loro teste sono via?" gridò la Regina.

"Their heads are gone, if it please your Majesty!" the soldiers shouted in reply.

"Le loro teste sono andate, a Vostra Maestà piacendo!" gridarono in risposta i soldati.

"That's right!" shouted the Queen. "Can you play croquet?"

"Ben fatto!" gridò la Regina. "Sai giocare a croquet?"

The soldiers were silent, and looked at Alice, as the question was evidently meant for her.

I soldati rimasero in silenzio e guardarono Alice, poichè la domanda era evidentemente rivolta a lei.

"Yes!" shouted Alice.

"Sì!" gridò Alice.

"Come on, then!" roared the Queen, and Alice joined the procession, wondering very much what would happen next.

"Forza allora, vieni!" ruggì la Regina, e Alice si unì al corteo, curiosissima di vedere che cosa sarebbe successo.

"It's... it's a very fine day!" said a timid voice at her side.

"È... è una giornata molto bella!" disse una timida voce al suo fianco.

She was walking by the White Rabbit, who was peeping anxiously into her face.

Stava camminando accanto al coniglio bianco, che la scrutava ansiosamente in viso.

"Very," said Alice: "...where's the Duchess?"

"Molto" disse Alice. "Dov'è la Duchessa?"

"Hush! Hush!" said the Rabbit in a low, hurried tone.

"Ssst! Ssst!" disse il coniglio con voce bassa e concitata.

He looked anxiously over his shoulder as he spoke, and then raised himself upon tiptoe, put his mouth close to her ear, and whispered "She's under sentence of execution."

Mentre parlava si guardò intorno ansiosamente, poi si sollevò sulla punta delle zampe, avvicinò la bocca al suo orecchio e bisbigliò: "è stata condannata a morte".

"What for?" said Alice.

"Per cosa?" disse Alice.

"Did you say «What a pity!»?" the Rabbit asked.

"Hai detto «Che peccato!»?" domandò il coniglio.

"No, I didn't," said Alice: "I don't think it's at all a pity. I said «What for?»"

"No" disse Alice, "non penso affatto che sia un peccato. Ho detto «Per cosa?»"

"She boxed the Queen's ears..." the Rabbit began.

"Ha schiaffeggiato la Regina..." incominciò il coniglio.

Alice gave a little scream of laughter.

Alice sbottò in una risatina.

"Oh, hush!" the Rabbit whispered in a frightened tone.

"Oh, zitta!" bisbigliò il coniglio in tono spaventato.

"The Queen will hear you! You see, she came rather late, and the Queen said..."

"La Regina ti sente! Vedi, era arrivata in ritardo e la Regina ha detto..."

"Get to your places!" shouted the Queen in a voice of thunder, and people began running about in all directions, tumbling up against each other; however, they got settled down in a minute or two, and the game began.

"Ai vostri posti!" tuonò la Regina, e tutti si misero a correre dappertutto, sbattendo l'uno contro contro l'altro; tuttavia, dopo un paio di minuti ognuno fu al proprio posto e la partita incominciò.

Alice thought she had never seen such a curious croquet-ground in her life; it was all ridges and furrows; the balls were live hedgehogs, the mallets live flamingoes, and the soldiers had to double themselves up and to stand on their hands and feet, to make the arches.

Alice pensava che non aveva mai visto un campo da croquet tanto strano in vita sua; era tutto gibbi e solchi; le palle da croquet erano porcospini vivi, le mazze fenicotteri vivi e i soldati dovevano piegarsi in due e appoggiarsi su mani e piedi per formare gli archetti.

The chief difficulty Alice found at first was in managing her flamingo: she succeeded in getting its body tucked away, comfortably enough, under her arm, with its legs hanging down, but generally, just as she had got its neck nicely straightened out, and was going to give the hedgehog a blow with its head, it would twist itself round and look up in her face, with such a puzzled expression that she could not help bursting out laughing: and when she had got its head down, and was going to begin again, it was very provoking to find that the hedgehog had unrolled itself, and was in the act of crawling away: besides all this, there was generally a ridge or furrow in the way wherever she wanted to send the hedgehog to, and, as the doubled-up soldiers were always getting up and walking off to other parts of the ground, Alice soon came to the conclusion that it was a very difficult game indeed.

All'inizio la cosa più difficile per Alice fu maneggiare il suo fenicottero: riusciva abbastanza agevolmente a tenergli stretto il corpo sotto il braccio, con le zampe penzoloni; ma generalmente, appena era arrivata a stendergli bene il collo e era pronta per dare una mazzata al porcospino con la sua testa, quello si girava a guardarla in faccia con un'espressione così perplessa che lei non poteva fare a meno di scoppiare a ridere; quando poi era riuscita a metterlo con la testa in giù ed era pronta per ricominciare, era molto irritante scoprire che il porcospino si era sgomitolato e stava per filarsela; per di più, c'era sempre un gibbo o un solco a sbarrare la strada da qualunque parte volesse mandare il porcospino, e, siccome i soldati piegati in due si raddrizzavano e si spostavano in altre zone del campo, Alice arrivò ben presto alla conclusione che era un gioco molto complicato.

The players all played at once without waiting for turns, quarrelling all the while, and fighting for the hedgehogs; and in a very short time the Queen was in a furious passion, and went stamping about, and shouting "Off with his head!" or "Off with her head!" about once in a minute.

I giocatori giocavano tutti insieme senza aspettare il loro turno, litigando tutto il tempo e azzuffandosi per accaparrarsi i porcospini; e molto presto la Regina montò su tutte le furie e si mise a pestare i piedi e a urlare "Via la testa a quello!" o "Via la testa a quella!" alla media di una volta al minuto.

Alice began to feel very uneasy: to be sure, she had not as yet had any dispute with the Queen, but she knew that it might happen any minute, «and then,» thought she, «what would become of me? They're dreadfully fond of beheading people here; the great wonder is, that there's any one left alive!»

Alice incominciava a sentirsi molto a disagio: certo, fino a quel momento non aveva ancora avuto alcun diverbio con la Regina, ma sapeva che sarebbe potuto accadere da un momento all'altro, «e allora» pensava, «che ne sarebbe di me? Qui vanno matti per decapitare la gente; il grande miracolo è che ci sia rimasto ancora qualcuno in vita!»

She was looking about for some way of escape, and wondering whether she could get away without being seen, when she noticed a curious appearance in the air: it puzzled her very much at first, but, after watching it a minute or two, she made it out to be a grin, and she said to herself "It's the Cheshire Cat: now I shall have somebody to talk to."

Si guardava intorno cercando una via di fuga e chiedendosi se ce l'avrebbe fatta a scappare senza essere vista, quando notò una curiosa apparizione nell'aria: dapprima la cosa la lasciò perplessa, ma, dopo averla osservata per un paio di minuti, riuscì a capire che era un sorriso e si disse: "è il gatto del Cheshire: adesso avrò qualcuno con cui parlare".

"How are you getting on?" said the Cat, as soon as there was mouth enough for it to speak with.

"Come va la vita?" disse il gatto, non appena ebbe bocca sufficiente con cui parlare.

Alice waited till the eyes appeared, and then nodded.

Alice aspettò finché non comparvero gli occhi e poi annuì.

«It's no use speaking to it,» she thought, «till its ears have come, or at least one of them.»

«È inutile parlargli» pensò, «finché non gli sono spuntate le orecchie, o almeno una».

In another minute the whole head appeared, and then Alice put down her flamingo, and began an account of the game, feeling very glad she had someone to listen to her.

Nel giro di un minuto comparve l'intera testa e allora Alice depose il suo fenicottero e incominciò un resoconto della partita, molto contenta di avere qualcuno che la stesse a sentire.

The Cat seemed to think that there was enough of it now in sight, and no more of it appeared.

Il gatto sembrò pensare di essersi messo in vista a sufficienza e di esso non comparve altro.

"I don't think they play at all fairly," Alice began, in rather a complaining tone, "and they all quarrel so dreadfully one can't hear oneself speak... and they don't seem to have any rules in particular; at least, if there are, nobody attends to them... and you've no idea how confusing it is all the things being alive; for instance, there's the arch I've got to go through next walking about at the other end of the ground... and I should have croqueted the Queen's hedgehog just now, only it ran away when it saw mine coming!"

"Non credo che giochino lealmente" esordì Alice in tono di protesta, "e litigano tutti così tanto che non si riesce a sentire la propria voce... e le regole; sempre che ce ne siano, non le rispetta nessuno... e non hai idea che confusione con questi attrezzi vivi; per esempio, quello è l'archetto che devo attraversare adesso che se ne va a spasso all'altro capo del campo... e avrei appena dovuto bocciare il porcospino della Regina solo che appena ha visto arrivare il mio è scappato!"

"How do you like the Queen?" said the Cat in a low voice.

"Ti piace la Regina?" disse il gatto a bassa voce.

"Not at all," said Alice: "she's so extremely..."

"Neanche un po'" disse Alice, "è così estremamente...".

Just then she noticed that the Queen was close behind her, listening: so she went on, "...likely to win, that it's hardly worth while finishing the game."

In quell'istante si accorse che la Regina stava proprio dietro di lei, ascoltando; così continuò "...probabile che vincerà lei, che quasi non vale la pena di finire la partita".

The Queen smiled and passed on.

La Regina sorrise e passò oltre.

"Who are you talking to?" said the King, going up to Alice, and looking at the Cat's head with great curiosity.

"Con chi stai parlando?" disse il Re avvicinandosi ad Alice e guardando la testa del gatto con grande curiosità.

"It is a friend of mine... a Cheshire Cat," said Alice, "allow me to introduce it."

"È un mio amico... un gatto del Cheshire" disse Alice, "mi permetta di presentarglielo".

"I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes."

"Il suo aspetto non mi piace affatto" disse il Re, "tuttavia, può baciarmi la mano, se gli va".

"I'd rather not," the Cat remarked.

"Ne farei a meno" osservò il gatto.

"Don't be impertinent," said the King, "and don't look at me like that!" He got behind Alice as he spoke.

"Non essere impertinente" disse il Re, "e non guardarmi in quel modo!" Mentre parlava si era messo dietro Alice.

"A cat may look at a king," said Alice. "I've read that in some book, but I don't remember where."

"Un gatto può guardare un re" disse Alice. "L'ho letto in un libro, ma non mi ricordo dove".

"Well, it must be removed," said the King very decidedly, and he called the Queen, who was passing at the moment, "My dear! I wish you would have this cat removed!"

"Be', bisogna toglierlo di mezzo" disse il Re molto deciso e gridò alla Regina che passava in quel momento: "mia cara! Vorrei che tu facessi togliere di mezzo questo gatto!"

The Queen had only one way of settling all difficulties, great or small.

La Regina aveva un solo modo per affrontare ogni grattacapo, grande o piccolo.

"Off with his head!" she said, without even looking round.

"Via la testa!" disse, senza nemmeno voltarsi.

"I'll fetch the executioner myself," said the King eagerly, and he hurried off.

"Andrò io stesso a prendere il boia" disse il Re entusiasticamente, e corse via.

Alice thought she might as well go back, and see how the game was going on, as she heard the Queen's voice in the distance, screaming with passion.

Alice pensò che tanto valeva tornare indietro e vedere come procedeva la partita, poiché in lontananza sentiva la voce della Regina che urlava come un'ossessa.

She had already heard her sentence three of the players to be executed for having missed their turns, and she did not like the look of things at all, as the game was in such confusion that she never knew whether it was her turn or not.

L'aveva già sentita condannare a morte tre giocatori per aver perso il turno e non gradiva per niente la cosa, dal momento che nella partita regnava ormai una tale confusione che non sapeva mai se era il suo turno o meno.

So she went in search of her hedgehog.

Così si mise a cercare il suo porcospino.

The hedgehog was engaged in a fight with another hedgehog, which seemed to Alice an excellent opportunity for croqueting one of them with the other: the only difficulty was, that her flamingo was gone across to the other side of the garden, where Alice could see it trying in a helpless sort of way to fly up into a tree.

Il porcospino ingaggiava una lotta con un altro porcospino, il che parve ad Alice un'eccellente opportunità per giocare un tiro di croquet usando l'uno contro l'altro: l'unica difficoltà era che il suo fenicottero se n'era andato dall'altra parte del giardino, dove Alice poteva vederlo mentre tentava vanamente di volare su un albero.

By the time she had caught the flamingo and brought it back, the fight was over, and both the hedgehogs were out of sight:

«but it doesn't matter much,» thought Alice, «as all the arches are gone from this side of the ground.»

So she tucked it away under her arm, that it might not escape again, and went back for a little more conversation with her friend.

Così lo cacciò sotto il braccio per evitare che scappasse un'altra volta, e tornò a fare altre due chiacchiere con il suo amico.

When she got back to the Cheshire Cat, she was surprised to find quite a large crowd collected round it: there was a dispute going on between the executioner, the King, and the Queen, who were all talking at once, while all the rest were quite silent, and looked very uncomfortable.

Quando tornò dal gatto del Cheshire, fu sorpresa di trovarlo con una gran folla radunatasigli intorno: c'era in corso una disputa tra il boia, il Re e la Regina, che parlavano tutti insieme, mentre gli altri erano in silenzio e apparivano molto a disagio.

The moment Alice appeared, she was appealed to by all three to settle the question, and they repeated their arguments to her, though, as they all spoke at once, she found it very hard indeed to make out exactly what they said.

Non appena Alice comparve, i tre la chiamarono per appianare la questione e le ripeterono le loro ragioni, sebbene, dato che parlavano tutti insieme, le fu difficile capire esattamente quel che dicevano.

The executioner's argument was, that you couldn't cut off a head unless there was a body to cut it off from: that he had never had to do such a thing before, and he wasn't going to begin at his time of life.

La tesi del boia era che non si può tagliare una testa in assenza di un corpo da cui tagliarla, che non aveva mai fatto una cosa simile prima e non intendeva incominciare alla sua età.

The King's argument was, that anything that had a head could be beheaded, and that you weren't to talk nonsense.

La tesi del Re era che tutto ciò che ha una testa può essere decapitato e che la smettesse con le assurdità.

The Queen's argument was, that if something wasn't done about it in less than no time she'd have everybody executed, all round. (It was this last remark that had made the whole party look so grave and anxious.)
