«LE FONTI dell'abisso e le cateratte del cielo furono chiuse; le acque andarono ritirandosi dalla terra, e nel settimo mese, il diciassette del mese, l'arca si posò sui monti dell'Ararat».

«THE FOUNTAINS also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped; and the waters returned from off the earth continually, and the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.»

Così sta scritto nel Libro della Genesi. E così, da secoli, eserciti di ricercatori e avventurieri percorrono le pendici del monte alla ricerca dei sacri resti.

Thus it is written in the Book of Genesis. And thus, for centuries, droves of researchers and adventurers have been combing the slopes of the mountain in search of the sacred relics.

Quel giorno, per singolare coincidenza, era il 17 luglio, il settimo mese dell'anno, ma la cinepresa digitale che sembrava puntata sulla mole dell'Ararat - 5165 metri sul livello del mare - non stava affatto cercando tracce di quei resti.

That day, by a singular coincidence, was the 17th of July, the seventh month of the year, yet the digital camera that seemed to be pointing at the bulk of the Ararat - 5165 meters above sea level - wasn't at all searching for traces of those vestiges.

Inquadrava, invece, un velivolo color rosso scuro in un cielo offuscato dalla foschia del primo mattino.

It was framing, instead, a dark-red colored aircraft in a sky dimmed by the early morning haze.

L'aereo si impennò, scese in picchiata, si raddrizzò, compì una rapidissima serie di virate sulla destra e sulla sinistra. La sua slanciata sagoma rossa fendeva l'aria lasciandosi dietro una scia appena percettibile. A occhio nudo, da quella distanza non si sarebbe potuto capire quali fossero le sue vere dimensioni.

The airplane went into a steep climb, nosedived, regained a straight line, performed a very swift series of right and left turns. Its slender red silhouette cut through the air leaving behind a quasi-imperceptible trail. With the naked eye, from that distance one could gather no hints as to its true dimensions.

Le conosceva però benissimo l'uomo che, chiuso in un camper sotto le rovine del castello feudale del curdo Ishak Pascià, ne seguiva con grande attenzione le evoluzioni con un cannocchiale attraverso un finestrino socchiuso.

They were no secret, however, to the man who, inside a camper below the ruins of the feudal manor of the kurd Ishak Pascià, followed its movements with great attention with a binocular through a small half-open window.

Al suo fianco, da un altro finestrino socchiuso, un secondo uomo manovrava con perizia la cinepresa, che attraverso un potente teleobiettivo stava registrando attimo per attimo le attività del velivolo.

By his side, through another small half-closed window, a second man skillfully operated the camera, which through a powerful telephoto lens was recording every moment of the aircraft's activity.

Come sempre, la vetta dell'Ararat era maestosamente nascosta tra una cappa di nuvole candide, dentro cui di quando in quando l'aereo andava a scomparire.

As always, the summit of the Ararat was majestically hidden amidst a hood of white clouds, inside of which from time to time the airplane would plunge out of sight.

Era un manufatto molto particolare: misurava meno di quindici centimetri in larghezza e quasi altrettanto in altezza. Volava a circa ottanta chilometri l'ora. Non poteva pesare più di cento grammi. Un giocattolo, all'apparenza.

It was a very particular fabrication: it measured less than fifteen centimeters in breadth and nearly as much in height. It flew at roughly eighty kilometers an hour. It could not have weighted more than one hundred grams. A toy, it would appear.

"Diavolo, lo svedese è riuscito anche a eliminare il ronzio del motore" mormorò l'uomo con il cannocchiale.

"Hell, the Swede's even managed to get rid of the engine buzz," muttered the man with the binocular.

"Sì", gli fece eco l'altro. "Bisognerà ingrandire molto le immagini, ma direi che il dorso è tutto composto di pannelli solari".

"That's right," echoed the other. "We'll have to blow up the pictures a great deal, but I'd say the top is all made up of solar panels."

"Sei sicuro, Attila?"

"Are you sure, Attila?"

"Direi proprio di sì".

"Pretty much."

"Quindi, forse quell'aggeggio va a energia solare. Sarebbe un colossale passo in avanti", commentò l'altro in tono pensieroso.

"So perhaps that contraption runs on solar power. That would be a huge step forward," remarked the other in a meditative tone.

Era un uomo di età indefinita tra i quaranta e i cinquanta, rigido portamento militare, capelli a spazzola grigio ferro, l'occhio destro coperto da una benda di cuoio nero, l'altro ceruleo, gelido. La guancia destra era segnata da una lunga cicatrice.

He was a man of indefinite age between forty and fifty, rigid martial demeanor, crew cut iron-gray hair, the right eye covered with a black leather patch, waxen the other, icy. His right cheek marked by a long scar.

Anche l'altro - un uomo robusto di non più di trent'anni, dal viso olivastro - aveva una cicatrice, ma sopra il labbro superiore. Gli tagliava di traverso uno dei due folti baffi neri spioventi.

The other, too - a robust man still in his thirties, with a sallow complexion - wore a scar, but above his upper lip. It cut sideways one of his thick, drooping black moustache.

L'oggetto a cui dedicavano tanta attenzione era il più avanzato progetto di MAV, ovvero Micro Aero Vehicle, originariamente finanziato dal ministero della Difesa degli Stati Uniti. E non si trattava affatto di un giocattolo. Le sue finalità erano in prima istanza belliche: si trattava di un micro-aereo portatile, lanciabile in qualsiasi momento e condizione e dotato di minuscole telecamere in grado di ispezionare dall'alto il terreno in un raggio di una decina di chilometri, inviando le immagini a una centrale. Se necessario, poteva annientare una postazione nemica con un'azione suicida.

The object they were devoting so much attention to, was the most advanced project of MAV, or Micro Aero Vehicle, originally financed by the US Department of Defense. And it wasn't at all a toy. Its aims were primarily military: it was a portable micro-aircraft, which could be launched at any moment and under any conditions and equipped with micro-cameras capable of scanning the terrain from above within a ten kilometer radius, sending pictures back to control. If necessary, it could wipe out an enemy position in a suicide mission.

Il minuscolo velivolo seguito con tanta attenzione dai due uomini nascosti nel camper, però, non era un progetto della difesa statunitense. A finanziarne il progetto era una struttura di uomini potenti di ben altra natura. Tanto potenti da essere riusciti a entrare in possesso dei progetti americani per farli sviluppare ai loro fini.

The diminutive drone which was being followed with such a close attention by the two men sheltered in the camper, however, was no US Defense project. To finance its design was a structure of powerful men of a far different nature. So powerful as to be able to lay their hands on the American blueprints in order to have them developed toward their ends.

"Se è vero che va a energia solare", riprese l'uomo del cannocchiale, "quel gingillo potrebbe non avere più grossi limiti di raggio d'azione. Finché c'è sole, dovrebbe poter viaggiare".

"If it does run on solar power," continued the man with the binocular, "that contrivance could no longer have major range limitations. As long as the sun's out, it should be able to keep to the air."

"Teoricamente", convenne l'altro. "Se funziona. E comunque la tua ipotesi mi sembra esatta, ammiraglio. Quell'aggeggio non è munito di telecamere ma di due antenne paraboliche miniaturizzate. Quindi, a quanto pare, i nostri amici si stanno interessando di comunicazioni".

"Theoretically," concurred the other. "If it works. And anyhow your assumption seems to me correct, admiral. That contraption isn't equipped with cameras but with two miniature parabolic antennas. So it looks as if our friends are interested in communications."

Ma proprio in quel momento accadde un evento imprevisto. Dopo un'ultima serie di virate in serpentina, l'aereo perse improvvisamente quota e puntò verso la grande montagna biblica, contro cui si andò a schiantare.

But in that precise moment an unpredictable event occurred. After a last series of winding turns, the plane abruptly lost altitude and pointed toward the great Biblical mountain, against which it crashed.

"Non funziona", commentò freddamente l'uomo con la cinepresa.

"Doesn't work," remarked coolly the man with the camera.

"Già", gli fece eco l'altro, abbassando il cannocchiale, chiudendolo e infilandolo in una custodia sulla parete del camper.

"So it seems," returned the other, lowering his binocular, closing it and slipping it into a case on the camper's wall.

"Direi che possiamo andare", concluse l'operatore, sistemando la cinepresa nel doppiofondo di una valigia dall'aria innocente.

"I'd say we can call it a day," concluded the operator, placing the camera into the false bottom of an inconspicuous suitcase.

"Sì, andiamo. Con calma, senza dare nell'occhio, ma cerchiamo di fare in fretta. Forza, Gevat", concluse l'uomo chiamato «ammiraglio», rivolto al giovanissimo ragazzone biondo che aveva seguito la conversazione con aria ottusa e senza dire una sola parola. "Impacchetta tutto, e partiamo".

"Yep, let's go. Quietly, without attracting attention, but let's be quick about it. Go on, Gevat," concluded the man addressed as «admiral,» turning to the very young flaxen bulky fellow who had been following the conversation with a dumb air and without uttering a single word. "Pack everything up, and let us be on our way."

Circa un'ora pi&ourave; tardi il veicolo, con targa diplomatica di uno stato europeo, attraversava indisturbato il confine turco di Dogubayazit, passando in Iran. Raggiunta agevolmente in giornata Tabriz, i tre uomini si separarono. Attila passò la notte chiuso nel camper, a cui nel frattempo era stata applicata una targa della repubblica di Georgia, e poi proseguì da solo verso il confine con l'Armenia.

At the end of an hour the vehicle, bearing diplomatic plates of a European state, entered Iran undisturbed across the Turkish border at Dogubayazit. Having reached comfortably Tabriz the same day, the three men split up. Attila spent the night locked up in the camper, which in the meantime had been fitted with license plates of the Republic of Georgia, and then continued alone toward the Armenian border.

In nottata, servendosi del piccolo turboelica di una compagnia privata, l'«ammiraglio» si trasferì invece con il suo giovane accompagnatore a Baku, capitale dell'Azerbaigian.

That night, using the small turboprop of a private company, the «admiral» continued on instead with his young escort to Baku, the capital of Azerbaidjan.

In un ufficio perfettamente insonorizzato del centro, l'occidentale dai tratti slavati seduto davanti alla scrivania sembrava non trarre nessun giovamento dal climatizzatore, che invece funzionava a pieno regime.

In a perfectly soundproof downtown office, the westerner with mousy features seated in front of the desk seemed to draw no relief from the air conditioner, which was running instead at full capacity.

Era visibilmente sudato e in preda a una forte agitazione. Sembrava non saper che cosa fare con le mani, che muoveva nervosamente a sistemare i documenti nella ventiquattrore aperta sul suo grembo, nell'impossibile impresa di farvi ancora più ordine di quanto già non ce ne fosse.

He was visibly perspiring and was in a state of considerable agitation. He looked as if he didn't know what to do with his hands, which he moved nervously to arrange the documents in the briefcase open on his lap, in the impossible endeavor of making more order in it than there already was.

"Quindi l'operazione è fallita", disse in inglese e in tono secco il giapponese seduto dietro la scrivania.

"So the operation failed," said in English and in a dry tone the Japanese seated behind the desk.

"Occorre ancora una piccola messa a punto, Mizuki-san", tentò di obiettare l'europeo.

"All that's wanted is a minor tune-up, Mizuki-san," ventured to object the European.

"È la quarta volta che ce lo sentiamo dire. No, ingegnere. La nostra organizzazione considera concluso l'esperimento e non vi destinerà altri fondi. Torni pure a casa, ma si tenga a nostra disposizione. Per noi lei è un uomo bruciato, ma potrebbe ancora esserci utile. Badi bene a quanto le dico, però: un solo passo falso e di lei scomparirà anche la più piccola traccia. Al contrario, sapremo apprezzare il suo silenzio. Vada pure".

"It's the fourth time we've had to hear this. No, sir. Our organization considers the experiment concluded and will not earmark anymore more funds toward it. You may go home, but do expect to hear from us. To us you're a burnt man, but you could still be of use to us. Listen carefully to what I'm saying to you, though: one false move and it'll be like you'd never existed. On the contrary, we shall know how to reward your silence. Now, go."

"Se volesse concedermi ancora cinque minuti..." implorò l'europeo. "Si sono verificate circostanze del tutto impreviste, le condense di umidità... ma il progetto continua a conservare la sua validità. Basta qualche ultimissimo ritocco..."

"All I'm asking is five more minutes..." pleaded the European. "There were some totally unpredictable occurrences; the condensation moisture... But the project's still viable. Just a few final touches and..."

"Ultimissimo? Ce l'ha già detto due mesi fa e quattro mesi fa e tutte le altre volte in cui il suo progetto si è rivelato fallimentare. Se ne vada, se ne vada, prima che io perda la pazienza. Forza, fuori!" ingiunse Mizuki.

"Final touches? That's what you said two months ago and four months ago and all the other times that your project turned out to be a failure. Get out, make yourself scarce before I lose my patience. Out!" ordered Mizuki.

"E ricordi bene. Lo ripeto per l'ultima volta. Una sola parola fuori posto, e lei sparisce. Inoltre, sia ben chiaro, tutti i diritti di un eventuale utilizzo del suo disastroso 'Firefly' rimangono nostri. Può piazzare gli altri suoi progetti al miglior offerente. Ma niente micro-aerei, in nessuna conformazione e per nessun possibile uso. Quelli restano nostri. Se riterremo opportuno riprendere la sperimentazione, glielo faremo sapere. La saluto, ingegnere. E porga i saluti dell'organizzazione anche alla sua bella signora e ai tre bambini.

"And do not forget. I'm telling you one last time. One word out of place, and you're a goner. Moreover, let there be no doubt: all the rights for an eventual use of your disastrous 'Firefly' remain ours. You're free to put your other projects out for bid. But no micro-planes, in any shape or form and for any possible use. Those remain ours. If we ever decide to resume testing, we'll keep you in the loop. Goodbye, sir. And bring the regards of the organization to your fine lady and your three children.

"Non pensi di spostarli dalla località dove vivono. A quanto mi dicono, la campagna svedese è molto bella, e mi risulta che i suoi ci stiano benissimo. Se lei avesse la sciagurata idea di trasferirli altrove, lo verremmo a sapere nel giro di poche ore e reagiremmo di conseguenza. Sono stato chiaro? Addio, ingegnere.

"Don't even think of moving them away from where they're staying. They tell me the Swedish countryside is really beautiful, and I understand your dear ones like it there a lot. Should the wretched idea of relocating them ever cross your mind, we'd find out in a matter of hours and we'd act consequently. Have I made myself clear? So long, sir.

"Addio", ripeté in tono minaccioso, bloccando sul nascere un ultimo tentativo di protesta del malcapitato svedese, che si alzò pesantemente e, raggiunta la porta, scomparve lasciandosi dietro un'atmosfera carica di tensione.

"So long," he repeated in a threatening tone, blocking at the outset one last attempt at protest by the hapless Swede, who rose wearily to his feet and, having reached the door, vanished leaving behind an atmosphere laden with tension.

Rimasto solo, Tatsuji Mizuki si alzò dalla scrivania e andò a versarsi una bibita gelata dal piccolo frigorifero dell'ufficio. Dietro gli occhiali tondi cerchiati di tartaruga, la sua espressione era imperscrutabile. Soltanto un leggerissimo tremito delle dita strette sul bicchiere lasciava trasparire il livello della sua agitazione.

Once alone, Tatsuji Mizuki got up from his desk and went to pour himself an iced soda from the small office fridge. Behind the round, turtle trimmed spectacles his expression was unfathomable. Only a slight tremor of his fingers clasped around the glass let the degree of his uneasiness transpire.

L'uomo appena uscito dal suo ufficio, l'incapace dei cui progetti di MAV aveva voluto a tutti i costi farsi sostenitore, aveva probabilmente i giorni contati. Ma li aveva forse anche lui. Sapeva benissimo, yen per yen, quanto denaro avesse sprecato l'organizzazione nel progetto "Firefly", e altrettanto bene sapeva quanto la Yakuza potesse essere spietata con chi sbagliava. Avrebbe fatto molta fatica a giustificarsi.

The man who had just walked out of his office, the inept whose MAV projects he had chosen to support at any cost, had probably his days numbered. But perhaps so had he. He knew well, yen for yen, the kind of money the organization had squandered on the "Firefly" project, and he knew equally well how merciless could be the Yakuza with whomever screwed up. He'd have a hard time justifying himself.

Well, he concluded to himself as he sat down again, he'd have pulled it off. The organization could not but take his merits into account. And the issue at its heart, unresolved by the failed project, continued to subsist. Hence someone had to find the solution. And that someone could only be him: he alone, in the entire Yakuza, had an in-depth knowledge...

Le sue riflessioni furono interrotte dal sommesso ronzio del telefono da scrivania. Aveva già recuperato tutta la sua sicurezza.

The soft buzzing of the desk phone interrupted his reflections. He had already regained all of his self-assurance.

"Sì?" chiese con il solito tono di gelida determinazione, portandosi la cornetta all'orecchio.

"Yes?" asked he in his habitual tone of icy determination, bringing the receiver to his ear.

"A little bird alighted on my window sill the other morning and brought me some ugly tidings, Mizuki-san," he heard say to him in an English tainted with heavy German inflections. "Rather, it wasn't a bird but a bug. A glow-worm. That which the Americans call firefly..."

"Non so di che cosa stia parlando, ammiraglio", ribatté freddamente il giapponese. "E non capisco come si permetta di disturbarmi. La mia segreteria aveva ordini severi..."

"I don't know what you're talking about, admiral," rejoined the Japanese coldly. "And how dare you disturb me! My secretary had strict orders..."

"Oh, non più tardi di qualche minuto fa ha avuto un ordine ancora più severo da un suo... diciamo così... superiore. Il signor Takashima, per la precisione. L'ordine di passarle subito la mia chiamata. Se in questo momento siete afflitti - e in particolare lei - da un problema di comunicazioni, non lo dovete a me ma al fallimento del piccolo progetto di quell'idiota svedese, di cui lei ha voluto fidarsi a rischio della sua reputazione".

"Why, just minutes ago she had an even stricter order from one of your... shall we say... superiors. Mr. Takashima, to be precise. The order to put my call through to you at once. If at this time you are afflicted - and yourself in particular - by a communication problem, you cannot blame it on me but on the failure of the little project of that Swedish moron, whom you had been willing to wager your reputation on."

"Come diavolo..." sbottò il giapponese.

"How the hell..." burst out the Japanese.

"Come faccio a saperlo? Be', l'esperienza dovrebbe averle insegnato che ho mille orecchi e occhi. Oltre all'unico occhio personale. È uno solo, ma non più tardi dell'altro ieri, di primo mattino, sul confine tra Turchia e Iran, in una località montana aspra ma affascinante, mi ha permesso di assistere a uno spettacolino che alcuni potrebbero considerare straordinario e altri increscioso. Un vero gioiellino della tecnica, il vostro Firefly. Peccato che non funzioni. Basta un po' di insetticida nell'aria, e la povera 'lucciola' casca".

"How do I know that? Well, experience ought to have taught you that I have ears and eyes everywhere. In addition to my own lone eye. It's one all right, yet not later than the other day, at dawn, on the Turkish-Iranian border, in a rugged yet fascinating mountain site, it allowed me to behold a little production which some could consider outstanding and others objectionable. A true engineering little wonder, your Firefly. It's a real shame it doesn't work. A whiff of pesticide in the air, and the poor 'glow-worm' hits the dust."

"E lei avrebbe un'altra proposta da farci?" chiese Mizuki in tono più cauto.

"And you'd have another proposal for us?" asked Mizuki in a more cautious tone.

"Così sembra che pensi il signor Takashima".

"That's what Mr. Takashima seems to think."

"Presto, mi dica", tagliò corto Mizuki. "Non mi piace perdere tempo".

"Tell me pronto," Mizuki cut him short. "I don't like wasting time."

"Neanche a me, e dovrebbe ricordarselo bene dalle altre volte che abbiamo lavorato insieme. Ma dovrà aspettare fino a domani. Non amo esporre i miei progetti per telefono. E non posso essere da lei prima di, diciamo, una trentina di ore".

"Neither do I, and you should remember it well from the times we worked together in the past. But you'll have to wait until tomorrow. I don't like to discuss my projects over the phone. And I won't be able to make it there before, let's say, thirty hours or so."

"Però con il mio... superiore ne ha parlato".

"With my... superior, however, you did talk about it."

"Non con lui direttamente, ma con un certo Mr. Shoda. Lo conosce, vero? Gli ho parlato a quattrocchi, approfittando della fortunata coincidenza che i vostri affari gli avevano imposto un rapido passaggio per la capitale dove mi trovo con la mia guardia del corpo".

"Not with him directly, but with one Mr. Shoda. You know him, do you not? I spoke with him one-on-one, seizing upon the fortunate coincidence that your business had forced on him a brief stop-over in the capital city where I now am with my bodyguard."

"Quale capitale?"

"What capital city?"

"Non lontanissimo, in termini di globo terrestre, dalla montagna dell'increscioso incidente di due giorni fa. Ma non mi chieda di più. Allora, va bene domani? Non posso precisarle l'ora, mi farò vivo non appena sarò arrivato".

"Not so far, in terms of earthly globe, from the mountain of the deplorable incident of two days ago. But don't ask me more. Will tomorrow suit you, then? I can't be specific about the hour; I'll be in touch as soon as I arrive."

"La aspetto", rispose seccamente Tatsuji Mizuki.

Alla Facoltà di Scienze Biologiche, Laboratorio Sperimentale di Esobiologia, Ingrid Lemke spense il grosso computer da tavolo e si lasciò andare all'indietro sulla poltroncina ergonomica.

At the Faculty of Biological Sciences, Experimental Laboratory of Exobiology, Ingrid Lemke turned off the big desktop computer and sat back in her ergonomic chair.

Era stanca. La ricerca a cui stava lavorando da mesi sembrava non voler procedere. Si strinse le tempie fra le mani e se le massaggiò lievemente, meditabonda. La sua bella faccia dai delicati lineamenti nordici e gli occhi azzurri sotto il caschetto di capelli di un biondo tendente al bianco mostravano evidenti segni di stress.

She was tired. The research she had been working on for months seemed stalled. She pressed her temples with both her hands and rubbed them softly, cogitative. Her beautiful face with the delicate northern features and the blue eyes under her blonde mop-top tending to white betrayed evident signs of stress.

Gettò un'occhiata all'orologio. Le sette e mezzo passate. I locali su cui dava il suo studio attraverso porte quasi sempre aperte erano silenziosi. Gli assistenti se n'erano andati tutti. Giustamente. Beati loro. Sollevò la cornetta del telefono e digitò un numero interno.

She threw a glance at the clock. Past seven thirty. The rooms her study gave onto through nearly always open doors were quiet. The assistants had all left. Rightly so. Good for them. She lifted the receiver and dialed an internal number.

"All right, I'll be waiting for you," replied Ingrid in a resigned tone.

Come lei, Walter era una grande speranza di quell'istituto universitario, e lavorava al piano di sotto. Si occupava di software per ricerche a largo raggio nel campo della biologia.

Like her, Walter was a great hope of that university institute, and he worked on the floor below. He worked on software for wide ranging researches in the field of biology.

Quanto tempo fosse che non riuscivano a permettersi una serata di piacere in città, Ingrid Lemke non se lo ricordava nemmeno più. Il pochissimo tempo libero lo dedicava al suo hobby preferito: l'associazione etico-ecologista che aveva fondato con un reticolo di amici e colleghi di molti paesi: «Milo». La «Venere di Milo», un capolavoro della classicità che per loro rappresentava la purezza del creato.

How long since they afforded themselves a night in the town, Ingrid Lemke couldn't even recall. Her very little spare time she devoted to her favorite hobby: the ethical-ecological association which she had founded with a web of friends and colleagues from many countries: «Milo.» The «Venus of Milo,» a masterpiece from the Classical world which to them represented the pureness of creation.

Quella di Milo era una strenua battaglia per cercar di imporre correttezza e legalità agli studi e soprattutto alle applicazioni delle biotecnologie. Una battaglia che, Ingrid lo sapeva benissimo, rischiava di essere persa in partenza. Gli interessi connessi con l'uso delle biotecnologie erano troppo grossi per lasciare il dovuto spazio ai problemi di etica. E loro erano troppo deboli, nonostante l'impegno e la quantità di tempo che dedicavano all'impresa.

That of Milo was a strenuous battle to try and bring correctness and legality to biotechnologies studies and, above all, applications. A battle which, Ingrid new all too well, risked to be lost right from the get-go. The interests connected with the use of biotechnologies were far too large to leave due room to ethical issues. And they were too weak, despite the efforts and the amount of time they dedicated to the endeavor.

Tutte queste attività non lasciavano praticamente a Ingrid un solo attimo di libertà, e il rapporto con Walter ne stava soffrendo molto, procedendo inesorabilmente verso il naufragio.

All these activities practically left Ingrid no time to herself, and her relationship with Walter was suffering greatly as a result, inching inexorably toward failure.

Ne avevano già parlato più volte, e avevano cercato di reagire da persone ragionevoli, dicendosi che tre anni di vita in comune non potevano essere gettati via per un momento di stress. Sarebbero venuti tempi migliori, e il rapporto sarebbe rifiorito. Ma Ingrid non ci credeva più.

They had discussed it several times, and had tried to deal with it as reasonable persons, telling each other that three years of life in common could not be cast aside on account of a moment of stress. Better days would come, and their relationship would blossom anew. But Ingrid did not believe it anymore.

Engrossed in her bitter reflections, the young Viennese scholar lifted the lid of the laptop that shuttled back and forth with her between home and institute. She turned it on and watched with an absent air the colorful start-up icons flowing on the screen.

I «minuti» che le aveva chiesto Walter si sarebbero di sicuro trasformati in un'ora, se non di più. Aveva tutto il tempo di verificare la posta elettronica in arrivo e di inviare qualche risposta. Aprì il programma di email e chiamò i messaggi in giacenza presso il provider che utilizzava fuori dall'ambito universitario. Un provider della massima sicurezza: non voleva che qualcuno ficcasse il naso nelle sue attività private.

The «minutes» Walter had asked for would surely grow into an hour, if not more. She had all the time to check incoming emails and send out a few replies. She opened the email program and retrieved the messages from her off-campus provider. A very secure provider: she didn't want anyone prying into her private activities.

Aveva la massima fiducia di colleghi e collaboratori, ma non si poteva mai sapere. Gli occhi indiscreti possono sbirciare dappertutto. E aveva più di un motivo per sospettare che le attività di Milo si fossero già fatte una discreta nomea di rompiscatole presso enti governativi e grosse aziende internazionali interessate allo sfruttamento delle biotecnologie.

She had complete trust in her colleagues and assistants, but one could never know. Prying eyes will pry everywhere. And she had more than one reason to suspect that the activities of Milo had already made quite a name for themselves by government agencies and large international businesses interested in exploiting biotechnologies, as being a pain in the neck.

Passò rapidamente in rassegna con lo sguardo i mittenti dei nove messaggi arrivati e poi li aprì. Gli affiliati inglesi chiedevano di organizzare una manifestazione di protesta contro un grosso allevamento sospettato di usare ancora pratiche illecite per gonfiare i manzi.

She quickly reviewed the senders of the nine messages in her mailbox and then she opened them. The British affiliates were asking that a protest be organized against a major livestock breeder suspected of still using illegal practices to fatten the steers.

In Belgio si voleva organizzare un violento boicottaggio di una ditta di scatolame. La sezione di Klagenfurt e Graz, nel suo stesso paese, esprimeva forte preoccupazione per una sospetta moria di pesci in un fiumicello e proponeva di monitorarlo. Dalla Svizzera, un'industria farmaceutica sospettata di usare in maniera indebita l'ormone della crescita. Da Praga, un laboratorio chimico che probabilmente studiava il plasmide ricombinante per la realizzazione di armi batteriologiche. Si chiedevano suggerimenti per metterle sotto controllo.

In Belgium, they wanted to organize a violent boycott of a canned food business. The Klagenfurt and Graz chapter, in her own country, expressed deep concern for a suspect high mortality of fish in a brook and proposed a watch on it. From Switzerland, a drug industry suspected of illegal use of the growth hormone. From Prague, a chemical laboratory alleged to be studying recombinant plasmide for bacteriological warfare. Guidance was being asked in order to put them in check.

Erano alcune delle attività di Milo, sempre da effettuare in maniera coperta, suscitando l'azione di monitoraggio o protesta e organizzandola, ma senza apparire direttamente coinvolti. Milo doveva rimanere, per quanto possibile, un'associazione segreta. Quanto al livello più alto di intervento, l'azione dissuasiva per mezzo di sabotaggi a impianti, per adesso rimaneva una pia aspirazione: chissà quando avrebbero disposto di persone adatte, addestramento e mezzi.

These were some of Milo's activities, to be always conducted undercover, instigating a monitoring or protest action and organizing it, yet avoiding any apparent direct involvement. «Milo» had to remain, as far as possible, a secret association. As for the highest level of intervention, dissuasive action through plant disruptions, for now it remained wishful thinking: God knew when they would have the right people, training, and means.

Altri tre messaggi non erano di particolare interesse: risposte a sue precedenti richieste di scarso rilievo. Il nono, invece, la incuriosì. Era contrassegnato dalla sigla di Massima Urgenza e arrivava da un nominativo dissimulato sotto un acronimo numerico che non conosceva e con cui non ricordava di aver avuto precedenti scambi di opinioni o informazioni.

Three other messages were of no particular moment: answers to past unimportant requests of hers. The ninth, instead, did rouse her curiosity. It was marked Maximum Priority and came from a name dissimulated under a numerical acronym unknown to her and which she did not recall having had any previous exchange of opinion or information with.

Il Soggetto del messaggio era cifrato - una semplice serie di caratteri alfanumerici -, ma bastarono gli ultimi quattro caratteri a metterla all'erta: .rcr. Segnalava che tutto il messaggio, compreso il Soggetto, doveva essere decrittato usando il programma RotaCrypt, un piccolo ma sofisticato software di codifica e decrittazione creato da un programmatore collegato con Milo. Molto più di un programmatore, in realtà.

The Subject of the message was encrypted - a simple series of alphanumerical characters -, but the last four were enough to put her on guard: .rcr. It suggested that the entire message, including the Subject, was to be decrypted using the RotaCrypt program, a small yet sophisticated codification and decryption software created by a programmer connected with Milo. A lot more than a programmer, in fact.

Ingrid copiò il testo del Soggetto nella finestra di un programma di elaborazione testi e lo fece passare in quello di decrittazione, che cancellò il terminale .rcr e presentò in inglese la frase: Informazioni su New World Order.

Ingrid copied the text of the Subject into the window of a word processing program and ran it through that of decryption, which deleted the .rcr extension and turned up the English phrase: Information on New World Order.

Sbuffò infastidita. Non era mai successo che i maniaci della presunta cospirazione per istaurare un Nuovo Ordine Mondiale le inviassero messaggi in codice. Nel loro delirio complessivo, però, capitava che ci fosse qualche accenno da valutare con attenzione circa la minaccia di un utilizzo distorto delle biotecnologie da parte del fantomatico New World Order. E uno dei compiti primari di Milo consisteva proprio nell'indagare e smascherare attività di questo genere. Quindi fece passare in RotaCrypt anche il testo del messaggio e lo lesse:

She snorted in vexation. It had never come to pass that the maniacs of the alleged scheme to instate a New World Order would send her coded messages. In their wholesale hallucination, however, there could be traced at times some hints which called for careful consideration regarding the menace of a distorted use of biotechnologies on the part of the spooky New World Order. And one of Milo's primary tasks did indeed consist in investigating and unmasking activities of this kind. Then she ran through RotaCrypt also the text of the message and read it:

Quando finalmente Walter fece capolino nello studio, trovò Ingrid ancora alle prese con il messaggio.

When at length Walter peeped into the study, he found Ingrid still fiddling with the message.

Ad angustiarla non era di sicuro il testo, un autentico delirio, ma il fatto che fosse stato criptato con RotaCrypt. Questo significava anzitutto due cose: che il messaggio era falso e che il suo indirizzo riservato di posta elettronica non era più segreto. Ma significava soprattutto che il programma RotaCrypt era caduto in mani molto sbagliate e che, di conseguenza, non poteva più essere utilizzato.

To bother her wasn't surely the text, a sheer hallucination, but the fact that it had been encrypted with RotaCrypt. That meant primarily two things: that the message was a fake and that her private email address was no longer secret. But it meant above all that the RotaCrypt program had fallen into very wrong hands and that, as a consequence, it could no longer be used.

Qualcuno se n'era impadronito, e sapeva da tempo quanto fossero potenti i nemici contro cui Milo doveva combattere, ma adesso aveva anche un'idea precisa della loro astuzia. Da quanto tempo controllavano i loro scambi di messaggi? Non era necessario che ciò avvenisse da molto.

Someone had got hold of it, and she had long been aware how powerful were the enemies Milo was up against, but now she also had a precise idea of their artfulness. How long had they been controlling their message exchanges? It didn't have to be that long.

Lo scambio di informazioni tra gli affiliati a Milo era fittissimo, per cui non ci sarebbe voluto molto per impadronirsi dei loro segreti. Ecco perché avevano voluto farle sapere che conoscevano RotaCrypt: per impaurirla e consigliarle implicitamente di smettere. Un lavoro di mesi era andato in fumo.

The swapping of information amongst Milo's affiliates was very intense, hence it wouldn't have taken long to get hold of their secrets. That is why they had wanted her to know that they knew RotaCrypt: to frighten her and tacitly warn her to opt out. The work of months had gone up in smoke.

Ingrid accolse il compagno con un cenno distratto della testa e continuò a consultare i database di Milo, senza nemmeno accennare ad alzarsi.

Ingrid welcomed her companion with a casual nod of her head and continued to canvass Milo's databases, without stirring from her chair.

Walter la guardò qualche istante con espressione irritata, poi girò sui tacchi e se ne andò.

Walter watched her for a few moments with an irritated expression, and then turned on his heels and left.

Ingrid non fece niente per trattenerlo: stava prendendo appunti nel programma di elaborazione testi. Se lui, prima, le aveva chiesto «qualche minuto» che si era trasformato in più di un'ora, adesso era lei ad averne bisogno.

Ingrid did nothing to hold him back: she was taking notes in the word processor. If earlier he had asked her for a «few minutes» which had turned into more than an hour, now it was she who could use a little extra time.

Finito di prendere appunti mandò un messaggio a Tom Minea, il genio dei computer che aveva creato RotaCrypt, per avvertirlo dell'accaduto. Ovviamente lo criptò usando un altro sistema. Quando finalmente spense il computer, erano le nove e mezzo passate. Soltanto in quel momento si rese conto di quanto fosse davvero traballante il suo rapporto con Walter.

As she finished taking notes, she sent a message to Tom Minea, the computer genius who had created RotaCrypt, to inform him of what had happened. Obviously she encrypted it using another system. When at last she turned off the computer, it was past nine thirty. Only at that moment did she realize how really wobbly her relationship with Walter was.

Uscita dall'istituto universitario si fermò in un fast food a mangiare qualcosa, e quando arrivò a casa vide che la porta dello studio del suo compagno era chiusa. Aveva imparato da un bel po' a considerarlo un segno di guerra.

She left the university institute and stopped at a fast food to grab a bite, and when she got home she saw that the door to her companion's study was shut. She had long learned to read that as a sign of war.

Tom Minea aveva alle spalle una vita complessa, che qualcuno avrebbe definito avventurosa. Con molti successi, ma anche con più di una bruciante sconfitta.

Tom Minea had a complicated past, which some would have dubbed adventurous. With many successes, but also with many a burning defeat.

La sua professione era programmare software per computer, e negli anni si era sempre più specializzato in applicazioni per il settore medico. Di origine romena, era nato negli Stati Uniti e stava facendo una brillante carriera presso un'importante istituzione universitaria di quel paese, quando il suo carattere spinoso lo aveva messo di fronte alle prime grosse difficoltà.

His wrote software programs for computers, and down the years he had specialized more and more in applications for the medical sector. Of Rumanian descent, he was born in the United States and he was pursuing a brilliant career by an important university institution of that country, when his prickly disposition had got in the way.

Si era accorto che qualcuno non credeva nelle sue ipotesi di lavoro. Non ci aveva pensato due volte: aveva dato le dimissioni e si era rintanato nei monti Tatra a lavorare in una clinica semiclandestina con un suo anziano cugino, Dimitru, un neurologo romeno espatriato, orgoglioso come lui e persino più di lui. Insieme avevano raggiunto altri successi, affrontato altre battaglie, subito altre sconfitte. Ma erano due uomini ostinati, difficili da piegare. Le attività di Tom, però, non si limitavano al lavoro nella clinica. Ne aveva altre, di cui quasi nessuno era a conoscenza, e meno di tutti il suo singolare e generoso cugino neurologo.

When he sensed that someone had no confidence in his work hypotheses, he hadn't stopped to think a moment longer: he had resigned and had holed himself up in the Tatra mountains to work in a semi-clandestine clinic with an old cousin of his, Dimitru, a Rumanian neurologist expatriate, likewise proud, if not prouder than he was. Together, they had achieved other successes, faced up to other challenges, and suffered other defeats. But they were two obstinate men, difficult to bend. Tom's activities, however, were not limited to his work at the clinic. He had others, unbeknownst to most, and least of all to his singular and generous neurologist cousin.

Quella notte, alla clinica di Dimitru e Tom Minea, un castelletto rintanato ai piedi dei monti Tatra sul versante slovacco, la situazione era della massima tranquillità. I due pazienti riposavano - non erano mai più di due -, e con loro riposavano l'anziano medico romeno e le due coraggiose suore che lo assistevano nel complicato lavoro di cercar di riportare tra i viventi persone colpite da coma apparentemente irreversibile.

That night, at the clinic of Dimitru and Tom Minea, a little castle holed up at the foot of the Tatra range on the Slovakian side, the situation was one of perfect tranquillity. The two patients were resting - there were never more than two -, and with them were resting the old Rumanian doctor and the two brave nuns who assisted him in the complicated work of trying to bring back amongst the living people affected by apparently irreversible coma.

Ma non riposava Tom. L'unica luce accesa in tutto il palazzetto, infatti, era quella del suo studio. Un ambiente letteralmente invaso da apparecchiature computeristiche ed elettroniche: tastiere, monitor, dischi removibili e ottici, cavi. Seduto dietro il suo tavolone da lavoro e in camice come sempre, Tom stava parlando animatamente in romeno con un amico venuto a trovarlo a un'ora insolita: l'una di notte. Il suo romeno era venato da un forte accento americano, ma più che sufficiente per affrontare qualsiasi tipo di conversazione, anche se ogni tanto Tom incespicava su qualche parola, soprattutto nei momenti di agitazione.

But Tom wasn't resting. The only light burning in the little manor was in fact that of his study. A space literally invaded by computers and electronic equipment: keyboards, monitors, removable and optical disks, and cables. Seated behind his large work desk and as always wearing his white coat, Tom was talking animatedly in Rumanian with a friend whom had called on him at an unusual hour: one a.m. His Rumanian was tinged with a heavy American accent, but it was more than sufficient to undertake any kind of conversation, even though Tom would occasionally stumble on some words, especially in moments of agitation.

"Sei sicuro che quella circolare sia autentica?" chiese.

"Are you sure that circular isn't a fake?" he asked.

"Assolutamente sicuro. Non posso rivelarne la fonte, ma è di totale affidabilità".

"Absolutely. I can't disclose the source, but it is totally reliable."

"Uhm", borbottò Tom. "In questo caso saremmo davvero di fronte a un grosso pasticcio. Ma che cosa possiamo fare? Quand'anche scoprissimo dove avrà luogo la riunione, come potremmo fare per infiltrarci?"

"Uhm," muttered Tom. "In that case we'd really be in big trouble. But what can we do? Even if we found out where the meeting is to take place, what could we do to infiltrate it?"

"Sì, per adesso non possiamo fare niente", convenne l'altro. "Ma rimaniamo all'erta e avvertiamo tutti gli amici. Potremmo scoprire qualcos'altro ed essere messi in condizioni di agire".

"Yes, we can do nothing for the time being," concurred the other. "But let's keep our eyes open and let's warn all of our friends. We might dig up something else and be put in condition to act."

Tom annuì e, vedendo che l'altro si alzava, lo fece anche lui e lo accompagnò al passaggio segreto che dava sull'aperta campagna, consentendo di uscire dal castelletto senza essere visti. Lo usava spesso.

Tom nodded and, seeing the other getting up, he did the same and escorted him to the secret passage that gave onto the open country, and allowing one to leave the manor undetected. He used it often.

Tornato nel suo studio e ripresa dal tavolo la sbiadita fotocopia della circolare di cui aveva discusso con l'amico, si rimise a leggerla. Redatta in inglese, diceva:

The system shall function through the indiscriminate interception of enormous amounts of data. I milioni di messaggi intercettati verranno filtrati in base a parole chiave con computer detti «Dizionari», al fine di identificare messaggi di particolare interesse. Tali parole chiave vanno dai nomi dei diversi paesi della Terra a quelli dei leader politici e delle opposizioni, ambasciatori, diplomatici, mediatori di grandi affari, personaggi del terrorismo internazionale eccetera. Giù giù fino a espressioni specifiche come «guerra», «armi», «attentato», «aereo», «nave», «treno» e così via.

The millions of intercepted messages shall be filtered on the basis of keywords through computers called «Dictionaries,» in order to identify messages of particular interest. Such keywords range from the names of the different nation states of the Earth to those of political leaders as well as of oppositions, ambassadors, diplomats, major business intermediaries, lead figures of international terrorism, etcetera. All the way down to specific expressions such as «war,» «weapons,» «assassination attempt,» «aircraft,» «ship,» «train,» and so on.

Ogni messaggio contenente una parola chiave verrà automaticamente esaminato alla ricerca di origine e destinazione, con connessi numeri telefonici, indirizzi di posta elettronica e così via. I dati verranno poi catalogati e trasmessi a grossi database con sofisticate possibilità di ricerche incrociate, aperti alla consultazione dei servizi di sicurezza dei paesi aderenti al progetto.

Each message containing a keyword shall be automatically examined for origin and destination, related telephone numbers, email addresses and so on. The information shall then be catalogued and transmitted to large databases with sophisticated crosscheck capabilities, open for consultation to the intelligence services of the countries participating in the project.

I destinatari della circolare tengano in particolare CONSIDERAZIONE il fatto che parole chiave particolarmente sensibili sono considerate, per esempio, «cocaina» (in tutte le sue varianti possibili) e «mafia» (anche questa in tutte le varianti note). Basterebbe una ricerca incrociata nei database di UBC su queste due espressioni per ottenere una colossale quantità di informazioni.

The addressees of the circular should pay particular ATTENTION to the fact that keywords such as, for example, «cocaine» (in all of its possible variants) and «mafia» (also in all of its known variants) are considered particularly sensitive. A crosscheck in the UBC's databases on these two expressions alone would be enough to obtain a massive amount of information.

Tom Minea interruppe la sua rilettura e sistemò con cura la fotocopia in una cartelletta, che infilò nel doppiofondo di uno dei suoi cassetti, chiudendolo. Era meditabondo. Davvero: se la circolare intercettata dal suo amico e compagno di avventure romeno era autentica, il mondo stava per affrontare un problema. Molto grosso. Anzi, due: da un lato il fantomatico UBC, dall'altro la contromossa preannunciata dalla circolare. Ma che cosa avrebbero potuto fare lui e i suoi amici con le poche forze di cui disponevano?

Tom Minea interrupted his reading and carefully placed the photocopy into a small folder, which he slipped into the false bottom of one of his drawers, closing it. He was meditative. Surely, if the circular intercepted by his Rumanian friend and companion of adventures was authentic, the world was about to face a problem. A huge problem. Two, rather: on the one hand the spooky UBC, and on the other the counter-move pre-announced by the circular. But what could he and his friends do with the meager means at their disposal?

He sat back in his reclinable chair and closed his eyes, pursuing his thoughts. All of a sudden he reopened his eyes and straightened himself up, with a deeply concerned expression. The strange message he had received a few days before from Ingrid Lemke had popped up in his mind.

In the messages Milo's affiliates swapped between themselves there could well be more than one of the keywords indicated in the circular. He must speak with Ingrid about it. Leave for Vienna asap.

He held out his right hand toward the keyboard of the computer to turn it off, but then he checked himself. He knew he'd toss and turn before he fell asleep. He must think of something else. Instead of pressing the off button, he called up on the screen the virtual chessboard on which he played strenuous games against a host of friends scattered around the world, with whom he swapped the moves by email. For want of anything better he played against the computer.

He again began to study with quasi-mystical attention the position of the pieces on the virtual chessboard.

A un sedicesimo piano del centro degli affari, dietro grandi finestre blindate e protette da tende impenetrabili a qualsiasi intercettazione, era in corso da più di un'ora una riunione dai cui lavori sarebbe dovuto emergere un progetto di consorzio tra le più potenti organizzazioni mondiali della malavita organizzata.

On a sixteenth floor of the business center, behind large bullet-proof windows shielded by curtains impenetrable to eavesdropping, a meeting had been in progress for over an hour to work out a project of consortium amongst the world's most powerful organized crime organizations.

La riunione era stata indetta dalla Yakuza giapponese, che da quel palazzo di Lagos, nascosta dietro una sigla commerciale di facciata, controllava la vita politica, economica e finanziaria di tutta l'Africa equatoriale e meridionale. The meeting had been convened by the Japanese Yakuza, which out of that building in Lagos, shielded behind a front business, controlled the political, economical and financial life of the entire equatorial and southern Africa. Ahead of the meeting every inch of the place had been combed with sophisticated electronic devices in order to probe its complete security: no indiscreet ear could have picked up what was to be discussed.

Attorno al grande tavolo ovale in vetro e alluminio erano seduti i rappresentanti delle cosche americane, giapponesi, cinesi, russe, sudamericane, turche e italiane, più gli osservatori di alcune organizzazioni malavitose locali di minore importanza. La discussione era al culmine dell'agitazione. L'inglese usato dai partecipanti, seppure scorretto, era comunque comprensibile a tutti: più che una lingua era un gergo.

Around the large oval glass and aluminum table sat the representatives of the American, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, South American, Turkish and Italian mob, as well as the observers of some minor local criminal groups. The discussion had reached its climax. The English used by the participants, if incorrect, was nonetheless understandable to all: more than a language, it was a jargon.

"Signori", esclamò animatamente il rappresentante siciliano. "Quello che viene chiesto alle nostre organizzazioni è uno sforzo finanziario enorme, della cui resa non siamo affatto sicuri. A noi italiani, nelle nostre diverse componenti, viene chiesto un contributo di venti milioni di dollari. Ma le finalità del progetto non ci sono ancora state chiarite. Né tanto meno ci è stato chiarito quale sarà il peso delle diverse organizzazioni nel nuovo Consorzio. E ancora meno ci è dato di capire se questa entità, definiamola «supernazionale», avrà diritto di intervento sulle attività e strutture locali".

"Gentlemen," cried animatedly the Sicilian delegate. "What's being asked of our organizations is an enormous financial effort, whose profitability we aren't at all certain of. Of us Italians, in our various components, is asked a contribution of twenty million dollars. But the aims of the project have yet to be made clear to us. Neither has it been clarified to us what the weight of the different organizations in the new Consortium is going to be. And even less have we been given to understand whether this entity, let's define it «supranational,» will have jurisdiction upon local activities and structures."

"È un'obiezione alla quale riteniamo di doverci associare senza riserve", gli fece eco in tono ancora più animato il rappresentante dei gruppi russi, ucraini e georgiani. "I dubbi esposti dagli italiani li abbiamo anche noi. Il progetto, di cui non sappiamo ancora quasi niente, è oneroso. E i rischi di ingerenza nelle attività locali sono troppo forti".

"It's an objection we feel we must associate with without reservations," returned in an even more animated tone the representative of the Russian, Ukrainian and Georgian groups. "The doubts exposed by the Italians are ours as well. The project, which hitherto we know nearly nothing about, is onerous. And the risks of interference with local activities are too strong."

"Signori, signori", replicò in tono amabile il rappresentante della Yakuza che presiedeva la riunione. "Se siamo riuniti a discutere, è proprio perché dobbiamo cercare di elaborare un primo progetto di massima, che sarà perfezionato in successive riunioni, portando alla stesura di uno statuto e alla definizione delle modalità operative, oltre che alla nomina di una Commissione di Controllo".

"Gentlemen, gentlemen," replied in an amiable tone the representative of the Yakuza who was chairing the meeting. "The very purpose of our discussion is to try and come up with an initial master plan, which will be perfected in subsequent meetings, and which will lead to a statute as well as to the definition of the operational procedures, other than to the appointment of a Supervisory Committee."

"Non andremo incontro a un fiasco come nel caso del vostro disastroso Firefly, signor Osaka?" chiese in tono ironico il rappresentante colombiano. "Sembrerebbe che a Mizuki-san l'idea sia costata piuttosto cara, no? Di che cosa si occupa, adesso? Di prostitute bambine a Bangkok?"

"Wouldn't we be heading for a fiasco as in the case of your disastrous Firefly, Mr. Osaka?" asked the Colombian representative in an ironic tone. "It would seem that to Mizuki-san the idea cost rather dearly, isn't it so? What's he currently into? Child prostitutes in Bangkok?"

"Responsabile del progetto ormai sono io, signor Medellin", rispose il giapponese in tono di melliflua cortesia. "Quindi, se vuole avere la cortesia di ascoltarmi..."

"I'm the one who's calling the shots on the project now, Mr. Medellin," rejoined the Japanese in a tone of mellifluous courteousness. "Therefore if you'd be so kind as to listen..."

Per motivi di sicurezza, i partecipanti a quel tipo di riunioni avevano la consuetudine di usare nomi in codice, cambiati volta per volta. Per questo progetto erano state scelte città dei paesi d'origine.

For security reasons, the participants in that sort of meetings had the habit of using code names, which were changed each time. For this project had been chosen cities from their respective countries.

"Viste le obiezioni", riprese Osaka, "sarà opportuno ribadire che lo sforzo finanziario richiesto è soltanto iniziale: potrebbero rivelarsi necessari ulteriori stanziamenti. Quanto agli amici italiani e turchi, va chiarito che dovranno essere loro a garantire anche per la quota richiesta ai romeni, visti i rapporti operativi che hanno con loro. Stante la situazione attuale, non è possibile procedere diversamente. Quanto agli albanesi, pagheranno sotto forma di servizi. Come apparirà evidente", continuò, bloccando sul nascere qualsiasi protesta, "la loro partecipazione è indispensabile.

"In view of the objections," continued Osaka, "it is opportune to reiterate that the financial effort required is only a start: further disbursements might become necessary. As for our Italian and Turkish friends, it must be clarified that they will also guarantee for the share required of the Rumanians, given their mutual operational ties. In light of the current situation, it's not possible to proceed otherwise. As for the Albanians, they'll pay in services. As it will appear evident," he continued, blocking any protest at the outset, "their participation is indispensable.

"Sappiamo che si tratta di un costo tutt'altro che indifferente, ma altrettanto non indifferente è la minaccia che ci troviamo a contrastare. A supranational monitoring instrument of all activities worldwide. An agency endowed with all the most sophisticated information, counter-information, defense and aggression tools. If adequate counter-attack measures are not adopted, we'll be annihilated. All of us, no exceptions."

"La solita bufala", ribatté con veemenza il turco. "Un ennesimo delirio su una variante del fantomatico New World Order. Dovremmo essere ormai abbastanza adulti per non credere a simili favole. Prestarvi attenzione è una pura e semplice perdita di tempo. E noi turchi, date le attività del nostro governo da un lato contro i curdi e dall'altro per sollecitare l'attenzione della Comunità Europea, abbiamo ben altre cose a cui dedicarci. "The usual fraud," rejoined vehemently the Turk. "The umpteenth hallucination on a variant of the phantasmal New World Order. We should be old enough by now not to buy into such old wives' tales. To pay heed to it is a pure and simple waste of time. And, given the activities of our government against the Kurds on the one hand, and to stir the attention of the European Community on the other, we Turks have bigger fish to fry. The shutting down of all casinos in Turkey, for example, will be a huge blow to our activities. You do know how much we invested in them, and..."

"No, Mr Bingöl", replicò con fermezza il giapponese. "L'UBC esiste, e casomai costituisce un ampliamento e rafforzamento del fumoso sistema già noto come Echelon, ma molto più potente. Come sappiamo, Echelon era limitato a cinque paesi dell'area linguistica inglese - Stati Uniti, Gran Bretagna, Canada, Australia e Nuova Zelanda -, e di conseguenza aveva suscitato le ben note proteste degli altri paesi, ma con UBC si vuole superarlo, creando una struttura di intercettazione potenzialmente aperta a tutti i membri delle alleanze occidentali".

"No, Mr Bingöl," replied firmly the Japanese. "The UBC does exist, and if anything it represents a broadening and strengthening of that muddled system already known as Echelon, but way more powerful. As we know, Echelon was limited to five countries of the English speaking world - United States, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand - and as a consequence it had aroused the well known protests of the other countries, but with UBC they are moving forward, creating an interception structure potentially open to all the members of the Western alliances."

The European Community countries are about to do the same, as they seemed committed to working out their constitutional differences; the adhesion of Japan - as Mr. Osaka will confirm - is in an advanced phase of study; and so on. Mr. Osaka is right: we're running a deadly risk and we've got to respond with every possible means, cost what it may."

"Would our friends let Mr. Osaka conclude his exposition? In other words, could we finally get to know what the project we'd be called upon to finance in order to hinder the UBC, consists in?"

"Lo farò in pochissime parole, Mr Canton", replicò subito l'esponente della Yakuza, chinando a sua volta la testa in risposta al gesto di cortesia del cinese.

"I'll do it in very few words, Mr. Canton," replied promptly the emissary of the Yakuza, bowing in turn his head in response to the courteous gesture of the Chinese.

"Per contrastare le attività di monitoraggio dell'Universal Bureau of Control è indispensabile che riusciamo a stabilire noi un controllo totale su quello che definirei il suo stesso tessuto connettivo: le comunicazioni. Dobbiamo essere informati attimo per attimo delle scoperte, delle attività e dei progetti dell'UBC. Ma ho detto controllo totale: ovvero un controllo che dalle attività dell'UBC si estenda a quelle di tutti i gangli vitali della politica, dell'economia e delle informazioni di questo mondo. Un mondo che ormai comprende una parte dello Spazio.

"In order to thwart the surveillance activities of the Universal Bureau of Control it is of the essence that we ourselves succeed in establishing our own total control over that which I would define its very connective tissue: communications. We must be informed at all times of the findings, of the activities, and of the projects of the UBC. But I said total control; that is a control that from the activities of the UBC be extended to those of all the vital political, economical and information centers of this world. A world which by now comprises a portion of outer Space.

"Because, even though remaining hidden, we must succeed in casting our shadow over the entire world. And in order to best hide we must pollute the atmosphere, cast bogus baits. In the United States, in order to break up illegal intrusions in communication nodes, a plan is being developed of the same name: 'Shadow'. We'll see who's got the longest shadow. Please, admiral, explain to us how we'll project ours over the world."

Mentre la sala veniva oscurata e dal soffitto calava uno schermo per proiezione di filmati e diapositive, al capo opposto del tavolo si alzò un europeo di mezza età e dai rigidi toni militari, che prima di prendere la parola fece scorrere lentamente sui presenti lo sguardo di ghiaccio di un solo occhio, passandosi una mano tra i capelli grigio ferro tagliati a spazzola. La cavità vuota dell'altro occhio era coperta da una benda di cuoio nero.

As the room was being dimmed and a projection screen lowered from the ceiling, at the opposite end of the table a middle-aged European by the stiff military tones got on his feet and, before taking the floor, let the icy gaze of one lone eye slowly pore over those present, passing one hand through his crew cut iron-gray hair. The empty cavity of the other eye was covered with a black leather patch.

Evgenij Rudenko, seduto alla scrivania del suo studio, teneva fisso uno sguardo carico di ansia sulla sua «creatura», posata sul tavolone del laboratorio attiguo.

Seated behind the desk of his study, Evgenij Rudenko kept a gaze laden with anxiety fastened upon his «creature,» which lay on the large table of the adjoining laboratory.

Lo studio avrebbe potuto essere scambiato per una piccola stazione trasmittente radiotelevisiva. Un intrico di cavi collegava tra loro una ridda di monitor, computer, dischi fissi, dischi ottici, lettori di CD-ROM, scanner e tastiere su cui scorrevano incessanti strisce di caratteri alfanumerici. La pesante porta blindata scorrevole che univa studio e laboratorio era aperta.

The study could have been mistaken for a small Radio-TV broadcasting station. A tangle of cables connected an array of monitors, computers, hard drives, optical disks, CD-ROM readers, scanners and keyboards on which lines of alphanumeric characters flowed ceaselessly. The heavy sliding strong door connecting the study to the laboratory was open.

La creatura in sé, per altro, era un oggetto relativamente piccolo. A un occhio normale sarebbe potuto sembrare un doppio chassis di computer, fino a metà verniciato di nero e per l'altra metà in un metallo chiarissimo. Soltanto un vero esperto avrebbe potuto capire che si trattava di una struttura realizzata in due leghe diverse, una destinata a disperdere il calore e l'altra a conservarlo. The creature, per se, was actually a relatively small object. To a normal eye it could have resembled a double computer chassis, half-painted in black and half in a very pale metal hue. Only a real expert could have perceived that it was a structure made up of two different alloys, one designed to disperse heat and the other to retain it. Yet only a super expert, with a deep knowledge of information technology and biophysics, could have divined what it was in reality.

Rudenko lavorava a quel progetto ormai da molti mesi, come fase finale di uno studio iniziato da anni. C'erano stati diversi errori, e il procedimento non era ancora a punto. Rudenko had been working on that project for many months now, as the final phase of a study that began years before. There had been several errors, and the procedure was yet to be fine-tuned. The biological molecules didn't always behave as expected; something random would oftentimes occur in the reaction piping. In spite of his efforts, his experiments continued to yield ambiguous results, and Evgenij was experiencing actual spells of distress.

He couldn't help but mull over these errors. Had he been presumptuous? No; on that front he felt appeased. Perhaps he had brought the project to a degree of development that was far too ambitious, but that couldn't be helped: he had to do it.

His very young and beautiful assistant looked at him with an affectionate expression of encouragement.

"Te la senti, Evgenij?"

"Do you feel up to it, Evgenij?"

"Devo", rispose Rudenko in tono amaro. "Non possiamo fare altro".

"I've got to," replied Rudenko in a bitter tone. "We have no choice."

La dimostrazione sarebbe consistita in una riproduzione virtuale di ciò che poteva effettivamente realizzare la creatura.

The demonstration would consist in a virtual drill of what the creature could actually accomplish.

La porta esterna dello studio si aprì. "I nostri ospiti sono arrivati, professore", disse una voce alle sue spalle. "Li ho già fatti accomodare nel laboratorio attraverso l'altra porta. La dimostrazione può cominciare." Il tono dell'ammiraglio Leipzig era perentorio, come sempre.

The outer door of the study opened. "Our guests are here, professor," said a voice behind him. "I've already showed them into the lab through the other door. The demonstration can begin." The tone of admiral Leipzig was peremptory, as always.

"Vengo subito", mormorò Evgenij. Quindi aggiunse in tono teso: "Desidera che presenti il processo in tutti i suoi aspetti, o devo limitarmi ai dati... positivi?"

"I'll be right over," murmured Evgenij. Then he added in a tense tone, "Do you wish me to present the process in all of its aspects, or should I limit myself to the... positive data?"

Leipzig lo fulminò con l'unico occhio. Poi fece ricorso al sibilo più feroce e tagliente a cui era capace di ridurre la voce. "Non si azzardi a fare passi falsi, Rudenko. Le organizzazioni interessate al progetto non devono per alcun motivo ritirare il loro sostegno. In caso contrario ogni cosa si vanificherà, e torneremo tutti a casa. Ma, ciò che più conta, lei non avrà mai modo di risolvere i suoi... problemi personali".

Leipzig looked daggers at him with his one eye. Then he summoned up the fiercest and sharpest hiss he was able to modulate his voice into. "Don't you dare try any stunts, Rudenko. The organizations interested in the project must in no way withdraw their support. Else the whole thing will come to nothing, and we'll all be heading home. But, what's most important, you'll never be able to resolve your... personal issues."

"Lo so, ammiraglio, lo so, non c'è bisogno che continui a ricordarmelo. Non contribuisce alla mia serenità mentale e alla mia voglia di applicarmi al progetto. Desidero tuttavia ribadire che prima di mettere in funzione il procedimento reale si dovrà aspettare la mia autorizzazione. Esigo la sua parola".

"I know, admiral, I know, you don't have to keep reminding me. It doesn't do my peace of mind and my positive attitude toward the project any good. I wish to reiterate however that before we set the actual process into motion you must wait for my authorization. I demand your word."

"Stia tranquillo, Rudenko. So quello che faccio. Mi ha convinto che corriamo ancora qualche rischio. Ma mi auguro che la soluzione arrivi al più presto".

"Not to worry, Rudenko. I know what I'm doing. You have convinced me that we're still running a few risks. But I hope the solution comes about asap."

"Me lo auguro anch'io, ammiraglio. Però è di vitale importanza che i risultati vengano controllati punto per punto fino ad avere la certezza assoluta circa l'affidabilità della procedura".

"So do I, admiral. But it is of the essence that the results be checked point by point until we have the absolute certainty as to the reliability of the procedure."

"Posso soltanto sperare che questa certezza arrivi presto. Soprattutto per lei".

"I can only hope that this certainty arrives soon. Primarily for you."

E l'ammiraglio Leipzig si voltò, avviandosi con passo marziale verso la porta che univa lo studio con il laboratorio trasformato in sala da dimostrazione.

And admiral Leipzig turned around and started with martial step toward the door that connected the study to the laboratory turned presentation room.

Rudenko, raccolti gli ultimi materiali che gli servivano per la dimostrazione, lo seguì dopo qualche istante. Appena superata la porta blindata, che si chiuse silenziosamente alle sue spalle comandata da un dispositivo manovrato da Leipzig, vide che gli ospiti erano già seduti da una sola parte del lungo tavolo, di fronte allo schermo appeso alla parete opposta.

Rudenko, having gathered up the last materials he needed for the trial, followed him a few instants later. As he passed the strong door, which shut quietly behind him operated by a device handled by Leipzig, he saw that the guests were already seated on one side of the long table, in front of the screen hanging on the wall opposite.

Non appena Evgenij si fu seduto, Leipzig si alzò dalla sua poltroncina. As soon as Evgenij had taken his seat, Leipzig rose from his chair. "Gentlemen," he said without delay in his English with marked Teutonic inflections, "I'm honored to introduce to you professor Rudenko, the man who fathered the process that will be illustrated to you. Therefore I leave the floor to him directly. I've little left to say except to underscore once more how in order to complete the experiment it is essential that a relationship of total trust be established between you and us. We all could but benefit from it."

Le espressioni degli ospiti rimasero impassibili. Bastava guardarli per capire che erano uomini duri, inattaccabili da qualsiasi emozione, capaci di affrontare ogni situazione ed emergenza. Erano i componenti della Commissione di Controllo di «Shadow».

The countenances of the guests remained impassible. A glance would suffice to perceive that these were tough men, not given to emotion, capable of dealing with any situation and contingency. They were the components of the «'Shadow»'s Control Committee.

"Vi mostrerò una rappresentazione virtuale del funzionamento del sistema", cominciò Rudenko. E si mise a digitare sulla tastiera del computer portatile che gli era stato preparato dalla assistente sul tavolo, già connesso a una serie di cavi.

"I will show you a virtual representation of how the system works," began Rudenko. And he started tapping away on the keyboard of the laptop computer that his assistant had set up for him on the table, already connected to a series of cables.

Sullo schermo appeso alla parete comparve una replica gigante del monitor del suo portatile. Una serie di nove immagini divise in tre file di tre.

On the screen that hung on the wall there appeared a giant replica of his laptop's monitor. A series of nine images divided into three rows of three.

"Rappresentazione virtuale?" chiese seccamente l'emissario americano. "In quale misura corrisponderà al funzionamento definitivo?"

"Virtual representation?" asked dryly the American emissary. "To what extent will this correspond to the final functioning?"

"Credo di poterla valutare in un novanta per cento", fu la risposta cauta di Rudenko, che digitò alcuni altri comandi per il computer.

"I reckon I can put it at ninety percent," was Rudenko's cautious answer, as he tapped some other commands for the computer.

"E l'altro dieci per cento?" chiese in tono bellicoso l'emissario russo.

"And the other ten percent?" asked in a bellicose tone the Russian emissary.

"Non è di sicuro una quota irrilevante", incalzò l'italiano.

"It surely isn't an irrelevant quota," pursued the Italian.

"Il professore ne è consapevole e ci sta lavorando giorno e notte con il suo staff", intervenne precipitosamente Leipzig.

"The professor's aware of it and he's working on it day and night with his crew," interposed Leipzig precipitously.

"Scusi la mia intrusione, professore", continuò, rivolgendo a Rudenko un sorriso degno di un cobra, "ma non posso trattenermi dal dire che gli ultimi risultati mi hanno letteralmente elettrizzato. A mio parere la quota di imponderabilità da lei indicata è eccessiva e del tutto cautelare".

"Please forgive my intrusion, professor," he continued, giving Rudenko a smile worthy of a cobra, "But I cannot refrain from saying that the latest results have literally electrified me. In my opinion the quota of imponderability that you have indicated is excessive and altogether precautionary."

'Che cosa sta dicendo?' si chiese Rudenko, senza riuscire a reprimere un'espressione di stupore misto ad autentica angoscia. Nella fronte gli si era incisa una profonda ruga di inquietudine. La fronte si era imperlata di gocce di sudore, sebbene nella sala, per effetto del condizionamento, facesse quasi freddo.

'What's he talking about?' Rudenko asked himself, unable to check an expression of bewilderment mingled with authentic anguish. A deep wrinkle of anxiety furrowed his brow, which now was beaded with sweat, even though in the room it was almost cold, as the air conditioning was blowing on full throttle.

"Che cosa succede, professore?" chiese il rappresentante dei cinesi.

"What's going on, professor?" asked the representative of the Chinese.

"Niente, niente, la ringrazio", si affrettò a rispondere Evgenij, "sono soltanto un po' stanco. Come ha detto l'ammiraglio, sono ormai più di due settimane che seguo di persona tutte le sperimentazioni, giorno e notte, in modo da poter ultimare e mettere finalmente in funzione il sistema reale".

"Nothing, nothing, thank you," hastened to answer Evgenij, "It's only a bit of fatigue. As the admiral said, it's been more than two weeks now that I've been personally following each and every test, day and night, so as to complete and commission the actual system."

"Tiri diritto", intervenne con decisione Osaka. "Potrà apportare al suo progetto tutti i perfezionamenti che vorrà anche con il sistema in funzione. Non possiamo permetterci di rimandare ancora di molto l'avvio delle operazioni. Abbiamo bisogno di realtà. La virtualità non basta più. In questo progetto sto mettendo a repentaglio la mia credibilità presso la mia organizzazione, che ho già convinto a investire una cifra enorme. A Tokyo ci si augura soltanto che le consorelle interessate confermino entro una settimana i nuovi finanziamenti richiesti per la messa a punto definitiva".

"Keep right on going," intervened with decision Osaka. "You'll have plenty of chances to better the project as much as you wish even with the system in operation. We can't put off start-up much longer. We need reality. Virtuality doesn't do it anymore. In this project I'm staking my credibility with my organization, which I've already convinced to invest a huge sum. All they're looking forward to in Tokyo is that the interested sister organizations confirm within a week the new financing required for the final tune-up."

Poi, quasi volesse alleggerire la tensione che aleggiava nella saletta, aggiunse in tono solenne:

Then, almost as if willing to ease up the tension that was lingering in the room, he added in a solemn tone:

"Congratulazioni, professor Rudenko. Il suo sistema consentirà al Consorzio di realizzare il suo fine, stabilendo un controllo globale sulle comunicazioni di tutto il mondo. Io sono stato il primo sostenitore del progetto e non ho cessato di crederci, ma posso soltanto augurarmi che lei riesca al più presto a eliminare quel dieci per cento di dubbio che sembra inquietarla tanto. Non è motivo di tranquillità nemmeno per noi. La prego, proceda pure alla presentazione, se i miei colleghi sono d'accordo, ovviamente".

"Congratulations, professor Rudenko. Your system will allow the Consortium to fulfill its aim, by establishing a global control over worldwide communications. I've been the first supporter of this project and I've never ceased to believe in it, but I can only wish to myself that you soon succeeded in dispelling that ten percent of doubt which seems to be upsetting you so. It's also troubling for us. Please, move on with your presentation, if that is the opinion of my colleagues, of course."

"Siamo venuti qui per questo", bofonchiò con il suo pesante accento del sud il rappresentante degli americani. "Il tempo è denaro. Forza, Mr. Rudenko, proceda".

"That's what we're here for," grumbled with his heavy southern accent the representative of the Americans. "Time's money. Buck up, Mr. Rudenko, proceed."
