A Napoli esiste un gergo chiamato parlesia praticato dai teatranti e in particolare dai musicisti.

   They have a jargon in Naples called Parlesia, practiced by play-actors, and, in particular, by musicians.

È un modo per capire se si appartiene o no alla stessa famiglia.

It is a way to figure out whether or not one belongs in the same family.

Nella parlesia lo stupido è definito 'o bacono', una bella donna 'a jammosa', le tette 'e tennose', quelle più abbondanti 'e to che toche', e l'apparato genitale maschile 'e richignense'.

In Parlesia the fool becomes 'O Bacono,' a gorgeous woman 'A Jammosa,' the tits 'E Tennose,' or, when more abundant, 'E Toche Toche,' and the male genital apparatus 'E Richignense.'

   Verbi fondamentali della parlesia sono l'appunire e lo spunire, usati rispettivamente per evidenziare gli aspetti positivi e negativi della vita.

   Fundamental verbs in Parlesia are the Appunire and the Spunire, used respectively to single out the positive and negative aspects of life.

Esempi: 'Appunisci Totò?', «Ti piace Totò?»; Me s'è spunita 'a jola, «Mi è affondata la barca».

Examples: 'Appunisci Totò?', «Do you like Totò?»; 'Me s'è spunita 'a jola,' «My boat went down.»

   Scopo principale della parlesia è quello di non farsi capire dai non addetti ai lavori. Supponiamo, ad esempio, che due musicisti stiano parlando tra loro e che si avvicini una terza persona alla quale non vogliono far sapere nulla di quanto guadagnano.

   The main purpose of Parlesia is to sound obscure to foreign ears. Let us suppose, for example, that two musicians are talking while up comes a character they wish to keep from knowing how much they make.

In questo caso il primo dirà al secondo 'chiste accamoffa', ovvero «questo ci ascolta», per poi aggiungere 'a pila è loffia', ovvero «la paga è bassa».

In that case the former will tell the latter, 'Chiste accamoffa', that is, «this one's listening,» and then add 'A pila è loffia,' viz., «the pay is lousy.»

   Tra i tanti modi di dire della parlesia quello che più mi ha colpito è lo specchio, dai più definito 'o tale e quale'.

   Of all the many expressions of Parlesia, that which has stricken me the most is the mirror, by most defined 'O Tale e Quale,' that is, the Doppelgänger.
