Tutto cominciò per colpa del toner. Ma, a proposito, lo sapete che cos’è il toner? È una sostanza inventata dal demonio: una vera e propria calamità naturale, una minaccia alla salute di chiunque si avvicini nei suoi paraggi!

    It all started because of the toner. But, by the way, do you know what the toner is? It's a substance devised by the devil: a pure and simple natural calamity, a menace to the health of whoever happens to be in its neighborhood!

    Il toner è più sottile dell'aria, si espande come una nuvola e macchia tutto quello con cui viene a contatto.

C'è però un rischio: se poco poco vi sfugge di mano precipitate in men che non si dica in una situazione disperata.

    Un giorno, a casa mia, me ne uscì fuori un tantinello.

   One day, in my place, a wee bit escaped.

Ebbene, non ci crederete, ma quel tantinello bastò per macchiare tutto il parato dello studio per almeno un metro quadro. «Pazienza!» dissi tra me e me. «Vuol dire che cambierò parato».

Well, you're not going to believe this, but that wee bit was enough to stain all the wallpaper in the study for a good square meter wide. «What can you do!» said I to myself. «I'll change the wallpaper.»

D'altra parte non ne potevo più di tutti quei fiorellini celesti che mi ricordavano i tempi della guerra, di quando sfollai con la famiglia a Cassino.

After all I was fed up with all those blue little flowers which reminded me of the war, when I evacuated with my family to Cassino.

    La stanza di noi ragazzi aveva quello stesso parato e Dio solo sa quanta paura ci mettemmo il giorno in cui le fortezze volanti americane bombardarono l'abbazia.

    The room of us kids had that same wallpaper and only God knows how scared we were the day the flying fortresses bombed the Abbey.

Ricordo ancora i pavimenti che sobbalzavano e i vetri delle finestre che tintinnavano come bicchieri.

I still recall the jolting floors and the glass of the windows tinkling like drinking glasses.

Ma chissà, forse eravamo noi De Crescenzo a tremare nel sentire le bombe così vicine.

But who knows, perhaps it was us De Crescenzos quivering in hearing the bombs so close by.

    Per cambiare parato gli operai furono costretti a spostare una libreria carica di libri e fu così che scoprii alle spalle della stessa una porta di legno chiusa a chiave, priva di maniglia, tutta screpolata: una porta bianca che non avevo mai visto prima.

   In order to replace the wallpaper the workers had to move a bookshelf full of books and that's how I discovered behind it a locked wooden door, with no handle, all cracked: a white door I had never seen before.

    Ora, provate a figurarvi la mia faccia: ero sbalordito! Non credevo ai miei occhi! Che c'era dietro quella porta? Dove portava? Non riuscivo nemmeno a immaginarlo.

    Now, try and imagine my face: I was astounded! I couldn't believe my eyes! What was behind that door? Where did it lead? I couldn't even conjecture it.

Così, una volta andati via gli operai, mi precipitai ad aprirla.

And so the moment the workers left I rushed to open it.

Prima tentai con un cacciavite, poi con un martello, poi con un Black & Decker, poi con delle spallate, e infine con un paio di calci riuscii a buttarla giù.

First I tried with a screwdriver, then with a hammer, then with a Black & Decker, then with my shoulders, and finally with a couple of kicks I managed to knock it down.

Dopodiché entrai in una stanza di pochi metri quadri di cui, giuro, dovessi morire in questo stesso momento se dico una bugia, non conoscevo l’esistenza.

Then I stepped into a room a few square meters in size whose existence, I swear, may I drop dead right here and now if I'm lying, I totally ignored.

    La casa l'avevo acquistata nel marzo del '71. Ero appena arrivato a Roma e la comprai già ammobiliata.

    The house I had bought in March of '71. I had just arrived in Rome and I bought it already furnished.

Non mi era mai venuto in mente di spostare quella libreria, né sulla piantina del contratto d'acquisto compariva un altro vano. Fin dal primo giorno ero convinto che l'appartamento finisse lì, lì dov'era piazzata la libreria.

It had never occurred to me to move that bookshelf, nor was any extra room reported on the title's plan. From the first day I was convinced that the apartment ended right there, where the bookshelf stood.

    Ora, invece, venivo a sapere che la casa era nove metri quadri più grande.

    Now, instead, I was learning that the house was nine square meters larger.

Dio solo sa perché le signorine Buzzi, le ex proprietarie, non me ne avevano parlato! Forse nemmeno loro ne sapevano nulla

God knows why Signorine Buzzi had failed to mention it to me! Perhaps they too ignored the circumstance.

    Per giunta, era anche arredata.

   And it was even furnished.

A parte l'odore di muffa e la polvere sparsa dappertutto, aveva sulla sinistra un lettino con un materasso e una coperta di lana, al centro un tavolino con quattro sedie, e sulla destra un vecchio armadio con un'unica grossa anta rivestita da uno specchio.

Apart from the odor of mould and the dust all over the place, there was a small bed with a mattress and wool spread on the left hand side, a small table and four chairs in the middle, and an old armoire with the only door covered with a mirror on the right hand side.

Insomma, una stanzetta ideale per un ospite di passaggio e il tutto senza aver speso una lira.

In short, a perfect little room for a passing guest and the whole thing without spending a dime.

   Dal giorno della scoperta presi l'abitudine di andarmi a rintanare nella Stanza misteriosa.

   Ever since the day of the discovery I took to hole myself up in the mysterious Room.

Non a caso l'avevo battezzata il mio «pensatoio», se non altro per il silenzio in cui era immersa.

Not by chance had I named it my «thinkingspot,» if nothing else for the quiet in which it was immersed.

Non c'erano radio, apparecchi televisivi, telefoni o altro marchingegno che potesse in qualche modo disturbarmi.

There was no radio, TV, phone or any other contraption that could in any ways disturb me.

Una volta rimessa in sesto la famosa porta, nemmeno il citofono di casa si riusciva a sentire.

Once the famous door had been repaired, not even the enterphone would be heard.

   Una sera, poi, accadde un fatto incredibile: erano le 22.30 e io ero incerto se sdraiarmi sul lettino per leggermi Finzioni di Borges, o se rivedere su Rai Tre Lo sceicco bianco di Fellini.

   One night, besides, something incredible came to pass: it was 10:30 p.m. and I was in two minds as to whether to lay down on the little bed and read Borges' Ficciones, or watch a re-run of Fellini's The White Sheik on RAI Tre TV.

Alla fine optai per Finzioni ed enorme fu il mio stupore quando, dopo due ore di buona lettura, mi resi conto che erano ancora le 22.30 e che, volendo, mi sarei potuto vedere Lo sceicco fin dal principio.

In the end I opted for Ficciones, and tremendous was my astonishment when, after two hours of good reading, I realized it was still 10:30 p.m. and that, if I wanted to, I could still make The Sheik right from the start.

In un primo momento pensai che il mio orologio si fosse fermato, oppure che la RAI avesse mandato in onda il film con due ore di ritardo; poi, però, ripetei l'esperimento con un altro libro e mi resi conto che «in quella Stanza il tempo non passava».

At first I thought that my wristwatch had stopped, or that RAI had aired the picture two hours late; but later I repeated the experiment with another book and I realized that «in that Room the time would not pass.»

Lo so: è difficile da credere, eppure è accaduto.

I know, it is hard to believe; and yet it happened.
