Agli occhi dei vicini di casa, la giornata normale di Camilla Cambise si presenta grossomodo così: alle nove e cinque le persiane elettrificate del suo appartamentino, terzo piano, si sollevano l'una dopo l'altra (sono due in tutto: camera e soggiorno, poiché le finestrelle di bagnetto e cucina affacciano all'interno di un cavedio, invisibili), e per mezz'ora circa un rivoletto di musica rock ruscella giù in cortile (Radio Eurasia Tostissima, hai capito la vecchia? ha gusti musicali che non c'entrano niente con la sua età, però bisogna ammettere che il volume è discretamente basso).

   To the eyes of her neighbors, the standard day of Camilla Cambise is roughly as follows: at five past nine the power blinds of her little apartment, third floor, go up one after the other (there are two in all: bedroom and living room's, as the little bathroom and kitchenette's small windows open onto an inner shaft, invisible), and for a half-hour a little flow of rock music streams down into the courtyard (Eurasia Hard-Rock Radio; would you believe the old hag? Her musical preferences are at odds with her age, but one must concede the volume is fairly low).

   Verso le nove e mezzo, nove e quaranta, che piova o ci sia il sole, la Cambise viene fuori dal portoncino della scala B, attraversa il cortile e va, modestamente ma impeccabilmente vestita con abitini a fiori o in un austero cappottino nero a seconda delle stagioni in corso, a comprare i giornali e a leggerseli al bar (il Bar Ciro, di solito: ma il martedì, che è il giorno di chiusura del Ciro, si sposta al Gran Caffè Roxane, un po' più caro).

   Around nine thirty, nine forty, rain or shine, Mrs. Cambise pops out the door of Unit B, crosses the courtyard and goes, humbly yet impeccably dressed in flowered dresses or in an austere black greatcoat, depending on the season, to buy the newspapers and to read them at the bar (Bar Ciro, usually; but on Tuesday, which is Ciro's day off, she goes to the Gran Caffè Roxane, a little dearer).

Prima della pensione, la Cambise avrà fatto probabilmente la professoressa, o forse lavorava in banca, chi lo sa, ma in ogni caso dev'essere stata un tipo di concetto, se no non sprecherebbe tanti soldi in giornali, no?, e non sarebbe divorziata o vedova o zitella o comunque così del tutto abbandonata da poter consumare mattine intere sempre e solo al bar, dove centellina un unico caffè e un bicchierone d'acqua naturale.

Before she retired, Mrs. Cambise must have been a teacher, or perhaps she worked in a bank, who knows, but she definitely must have been a white collar, or she wouldn't be wasting all that money on newspapers, would she?, and she wouldn't be divorced, or a widow, or a spinster, or however so completely forlorn as to be able to spend entire mornings always and exclusively at the bar, where she sips her one coffee and a large glass of natural water.

  Di tanto in tanto capita che sollevi gli occhiali da lettura fin sui capelli (grigi e tagliati maluccio) per guardarsi un po' attorno e indirizzare un cenno di riconoscimento alle solite facce del quartiere, però nessuno la disturba mai. Alle dodici e dieci minuto più minuto meno, quando le cameriere si preparano per i panini caldi degli impiegati in pausa, la Cambise lascia cortesemente libero il tavolino, poi la si vede fare una puntata o alla Esselunga o al take-away cinese o, più frequentemente, alla salumeria-rosticceria "Il Pollo d'Oro", che in caso di bisogno può effettuare consegne a domicilio.

  From time to time she pushes her reading glasses up onto her hair (gray and poorly trimmed) to throw a glance about and address a wave of acknowledgment to the familiar local faces, but no one ever disturbs her. At ten past twelve, minute more or minute less, when the waitresses prepare for the hot sandwiches of the clerks on lunch break, Mrs. Cambise considerately vacates the table; then she is seen briefly at the Esselunga or at the Chinese take-away or, more frequently, at the «Golden Chicken» delicatessen and grill-room, which does home delivery upon request.

   Con i suoi pacchettini della spesa, eccola quindi ritornare a casa e, salvo che non prenda verso le diciassette il tram che porta in centro (va al cinema? a teatro? ad ascoltare qualche conferenza? fatto sta che esce al massimo due volte a settimana), nessuno la vedrà riattraversare il cortile o affacciarsi o riemergere in alcun modo dal suo bilocale fino alle nove e cinque del giorno successivo: gli unici segni della sua esistenza sono nel pomeriggio occasionali attacchi di musica, ridotta prontamente a un volume più basso, l'accensione di una luce al crepuscolo, poi, mentre la serata scivola nella notte e sul cortile scende un silenzio opaco, dalle tende ben chiuse del suo soggiorno può scoppiettare fuori la stranezza di qualche risatina.    Then she heads for home, carrying her little shopping bags, and, unless she took the 5 pm streetcar that runs into town (is she going to the movies? to a play? to some lecture? The fact is, she goes out twice a week at most), she is no longer to be seen crossing the courtyard again or looking out of the window or re-emerging in any way from her two room apartment until five past nine the next day; the only signs of her existence in the afternoon being occasional music attacks, promptly reduced to a lower volume, a lamp burning at dusk; and then, as the evening slips into the night and a dull quiet sets in over the courtyard, from the accurately pulled curtains of her lounge might crackle out the oddity of a chortle or two. What'd she be laughing about, that one, all alone?

   Va bene che dalla sua finestra, fino a quando, verso le tre di notte, il fruscio fastidioso del motorino elettrico segnala la chiusura delle persiane, si può veder filtrare l'azzurrità di un video: però, da ormai sei mesi, o forse sette, più nessuno ha sentito provenire da quell'appartamento, neanche a volume minimo, nessun audio di film né di programma televisivo alcuno. La Camilla Cambise avrà voluto immergersi fino in fondo nel ruolo di condomina perfetta e passerà le sere con una cuffia stereo sulle orecchie?

   True, from her window, until when, round three am, the annoying rustling of the electric motor signals the closing of the blinds, one can see the blueness of a video filter through; but, for 6 months now, or perhaps seven, no one has heard any audio of movies or TV programs issuing from that apartment anymore, not even at lowest volume. Is Camilla Cambise playing perfect tenant and passing her evenings with stereo earphones on her head?

   Sì, è così. O quasi. Da sei mesi Camilla sta facendo un videogioco, e lo fa con la cuffia sulle orecchie, perché all'inizio aveva un po' vergogna.

   That's it. Or close enough. For six months Camilla has been playing a videogame, and she does it with the earphones on her head, because at first she was a little ashamed.

   Tutti quei rumorini sintetizzati, i cinguettii, gli urletti, e soprattutto i tuoni! La fanno sussultare ancora adesso, perché arrivano sempre all'improvviso, e Camilla ridacchia e scosta di un millimetro la cuffia dalle orecchie, scuotendo leggermente la testa.

   All those wee synthesized sounds, the twittering, the skrieking, and most of all the thunders! They still cause her to start, for they always come suddenly; and Camilla laughs and pulls the earphones a millimeter from her ears, shaking slightly her head.

Aveva cominciato, su consiglio del medico, con uno sparatutto per playstation. Sembrava infatti che quei movimenti rapidi delle dita e del polso sul joystick fossero un toccasana per riallenare i riflessi e ritardare la sclerosi: però si era sentita molto a disagio a stare lì a far fuoco a ogni minimo guizzo sullo schermo. Una volta capito il meccanismo, non c'era gioco. E inoltre, in quarant'anni di onorato servizio nei Fucilieri Speciali Antirabbia e nonostante le sue ben tre medaglie d'oro ai campionati interforze per Tiratori Scelti, Camilla non ha mai trovato divertente uccidere.

She had began, on doctor's advise, with a shoot-all for play-station. It seemed in fact that those swift movements of fingers and wrist on the joystick would be a panacea to retrain her reflexes and hold off sclerosis; but she had felt uneasy as she stood there shooting at any minimal hop on the screen. Once the mechanism had been grasped, there was no game. And besides, in forty years of honorable service with the Special Anti-Rabies Fusiliers and despite her three gold medals at the Interforce Tournament for Sharp Shooters, Camilla has never found in killing any fun.

   Tutte quelle povere volpi, tutti quei cani con le fauci schiumanti e gli occhi tristi, e, al tempo della Grande Epidemia, tutti quei ragazzini e le ragazze urlanti...

   All those poor foxes, all those dogs with the foamy jaws and the dispirited eyes; and, at the time of the Great Epidemics, all those kids and the screaming girls...

Dopo i primi due casi di studenti rabbiosi, Camilla si era chiesta perché mai il suo Comando non avesse cambiato le normali pallottole con qualche cosa di meno letale, e al terzo si era spinta ad avanzare formalmente l'istanza di rimettere in uso le siringhe di sonnifero già avute in dotazione quando si era trattato di un prezioso elefante dello zoo, ma dalle vie gerarchiche le era disceso l'ordine di fare meno storie e, confidenzialmente, le era stato spiegato che ogni dimostrazione di sensibilità, per quanto umanamente comprensibile, sarebbe stata pericolosissima: avevano a che fare con un ceppo di Rabbia Politica terribilmente contagioso, irrimediabilmente virulento, inguaribile.

After the first two cases of rabid students, Camilla had asked herself why on earth her Command wouldn't replace the regular bullets with something less lethal, and at the third she had gone as far as formally file a motion for restoring the sleeping injections that had previously been provided for the case of a prized elephant of the zoo; but through the line of command the order had come down to her to quit beating about the bush and it had been explained to her, off the record, that any showing of sensitivity, if humanly comprehensible, would have been calamitous: what they were dealing with, was a stock of Political Rabies which was terribly contagious, helplessly virulent, untreatable.

   Abbattere ogni capo infetto era un'odiosa necessità, tesa a salvaguardare la parte ancora sana del Paese. Fu dunque con un senso di dovere ben riposto che Camilla operò anche in quella campagna, ma negli anni seguenti, a mano a mano che si avvicinava all'età pensionabile, qualche traccia di dubbio cominciò a riaffiorare e, se non arrivò a farle mai tremare veramente la mano sul grilletto, qualche volta inquinò la precisione della sua mira fino a lasciar scappare una o due volpi con la pelliccia appena un po' strinata. Perciò, Camilla non può divertirsi a far fuori a mitraglia alieni e mostri: le riesce troppo facile e, sfortunatamente, la porta a risentirsi giovane.

   To destroy each and every infected head was a despicable necessity, directed to safeguarding the healthy part of the Country. It was therefore with a well placed sense of duty that Camilla had participated in that campaign, too, but in the years that followed, as she got closer to retirement age, some traces of doubt began to creep up afresh, and, if it actually never did get to the point of making her finger shake on the trigger, it occasionally came to affect the accuracy of her shot to the extent of letting one or two foxes escape with just a wrinkle on their coat. And that is why Camilla cannot enjoy taking out aliens and monsters in droves: it's all too easy for her and, unfortunately, it makes her feel younger again.

   Al negozio dove tornò nella speranza di cambiare il gioco con un altro, un commesso cortese la informò che, avendolo comprato, le toccava tenerselo: ma perché non pensare a un piccolo investimento supplementare e allargarsi alla gamma dei giochi per PC? Con una buona macchina, il nipotino avrebbe anche imparato ad andare oltre i giochi.

   At the store where she returned in the hope of exchanging the game with another, a polite salesman informed her that, having bought it, she had to live with it: but why not consider a small supplemental investment and move on to the wider choice of games for PCs? With a good machine, her grandson would have learned things other than games.

Camilla, nipotina di sé stessa, ridacchiò ma cedette. E non se ne è pentita: installato il computer, sbirciata qualche demo, si è subito imbattuta in questo gioco di simulazione che, da sei mesi, la sta coinvolgendo piacevolmente. È intitolato "Se fossi Dio" e consiste nella creazione di un intero mondo. Non molto grande, per la verità: il pianeta ha soltanto un paio di continenti un po' sperduti nell'Oceano Totale, poco più grossi di un grosso isolotto.

Camilla, as her own acting niece, laughed but caved in. And she has never regretted it: the computer installed, a few demos glanced at, she had soon come across this simulation game which, for six months, has been keeping her pleasurably engaged. It is titled "If I Were God" and it consists in the creation of a whole world. Not too large, really: the planet numbers only a couple of continents somewhat far off in the Total Ocean, scarcely larger than a mid-sized island.

   Ma a lei bastano. C'è tanto da fare! All'inizio, incantata dalla bellezza dei paesaggi nudi, Camilla procedeva lentamente: cieli altissimi senza ombra di nuvole si andavano iridando dei riflessi rossi e gialli proiettati dalle terre deserte, rispecchiavano l'azzurro profondissimo delle acque senza vita. Lei guardava, ammirando l'abilità dei grafici e prendendo possesso: le piaceva quel mondo di poligoni che, combinati in fini tessiture, generavano forme cristalline e tridimensionali. E non le dispiaceva che gli unici rumori fossero un dolce sibilo di vento e il ciclico respiro delle maree.

   But they are enough to her. There is so much to be done! At first, enchanted by the beauty of the naked landscapes, Camilla proceeded  slowly: very high cloudless skies were taking on the red and yellow reflections projected from desert lands, reflected the very deep blue of lifeless waters. She observed, admiring the ability of graphic designers and taking possession: she loved that world of polygons which, combined into fine textures, gave birth to crystalline and three-dimensional shapes. And it did not upset her that the only sounds were a soft whistle of the wind and the cyclical breathing of the tides.

Fu quasi controvoglia che iniziò a raggruppare qualche macromolecola, ma, si sa, poi le cose ti prendono la mano e dalle proteine si fa presto a arrivare ai protozoi.

It was almost unwillingly that she began gathering some macromolecules, but then, you know how it is, you get carried away and from proteins you're on to protozoan before you know.

   Senza nemmeno rendersene conto, si era trovata piena di dinosauri, e già qualche mammifero sgattaiolava in giro nascondendosi nei cespugli. Ora di darsi una regolata e cominciare a giocare sul serio "Se fossi Dio", che nelle versioni più diffuse può intitolarsi "Populous" o anche "Civilization", e che sostanzialmente non è un gioco diverso dal ben noto "Sim City", ha il semplice obiettivo di creare dal niente una simulazione di umanità migliore: equilibrata, stabile, armoniosa, possibilmente giusta.

   Without even realizing it, she had found herself swarmed with dinosaurs, and some mammals were already wandering about hiding in the bushes. Time to straighten things up and start playing for real "If I Were God," which in its most popular versions can be found as "Populous" or also "Civilization," and which substantially is not different a game from the widely known "Sim City;" it has the simple objective of creating from scratch a simulation of improved humanity: balanced, stable, harmonious, possibly just.

   In sei mesi Camilla ha già ottenuto qualche risultato interessante sul suo continente maggiore, che per un certo gusto di autoflagellazione ha chiamato Volpizia: gli esseri umani qui sono passati in fretta oltre la fase delle guerre tribali e stanno sviluppando una buona tendenza alla cooperazione. Hanno federazioni di città, scuole, teatri, ospedali efficienti, splendidi parchi pubblici popolati di deliziose volpi sia rosse sia argentate.

   In six months Camilla has already come to some interesting results on her main continent, which on account of a certain penchant for self-flagellation she named Volpizia: human beings here have passed quickly beyond the phase of tribal warfare and are developing a good tendency to cooperation. They have municipal federation, schools, theaters, efficient hospitals, and beautiful public parks peopled with delightful red and silver foxes.

Ogni tanto qualcuno dei cittadini muore ancora di rabbia, ma solo per ragioni che Camilla trova graziosamente infantili: un individuo per esempio è morto perché gli altri non gli hanno lasciato decorare la Mensa Collettiva con il poema spray da lui composto (e che in realtà non era tanto brutto).

From time to time some of the citizens still die of rabies, but only for reasons which Camilla finds graciously childish: one person, for example, has died because others wouldn't let him embellish the Communal Cafeteria with the spray-poem that he had composed (and which indeed wasn't bad at all).

   Invece a Distopia, il continente piccolo dove Camilla ha in corso gli esperimenti più audaci per lei, le due popolazioni adiacenti ma rigorosamente separate di Ermafroditi e Amazzoni vanno così d'accordo che hanno inventato per conto proprio le Olimpiadi Sessuali Distopiche, un fantasioso rito sportivo che prevede l'incontro periodico e pacifico di tutti gli individui adulti, e che strappa a Camilla le risatine più convulse.

   Instead at Distopia, the small continent where Camilla has her most audacious experiments going, the two adjoining but strictly separated populations of the Hermaphrodites and of the Amazons go along so well that they have invented, on their own, the Distopic Sexual Olympics, a fanciful sports ritual which provides for the periodical and peaceful encounter of all adult individuals, and makes Camilla laugh in earnest.

In materia di sesso non ha molta esperienza: quando si è Tiratrici Scelte, avere relazioni personali può riuscire difficile, perché gli uomini o sono già scappati o stanno certamente mirando ad altro, e lei infatti da anziana, di no in no, si è ritrovata sola, saggia e amara, cioè nelle condizioni veramente ideali per recitare la parte di Dio. Volpizia e Distopia sono la sua vendetta quotidiana, la sua curiosità trainante, il suo elisir di vita piena.

In the matter of sex she hasn't much experience: being a she-Sharp-Shooter weighs heavily on personal relations, for men have either vanished already or they are certainly aiming at something else, and she in fact as an old woman, from no to no, had found herself alone, wise and bitter, that is in the truly ideal conditions to play God. Volpizia and Distopia are her daily retribution, her driving curiosity, her elixir of full life.

   Tanto più che, due volte a settimana, Camilla ha cominciato a frequentare le riunioni di un gruppo di appassionati che, con i loro diari di creazione sottobraccio, si radunano al Centro Sociale Pox per confrontare i rispettivi mondi. Ognuno, come lei, studia con cura tutte le mattine le notizie economiche e politiche per ricavarne alcuni principi generali e applicare ai suoi popoli l'opposto.

   All the more so that, twice a week, Camilla has began to attend the meetings of a group of enthusiasts whom, with their diaries of creation under their arm, congregate at the Pox Social Center to compare their respective worlds. Each, like her, painstakingly studies every morning the economic and political news in order to draw from them some general principles and apply the opposite to his peoples.

Come lei, ognuno sa che la simulazione non è niente di più che un gioco ozioso, eppure si accalorano, discutono, manifestano i sintomi di una Rabbia Politica attenuata e confusa ma non morta. Camilla è felicissima di aver scoperto in tempo "Se fossi Dio".

Like her, each knows that the simulation is but an idle game, and yet they get hot about it, argue, display the symptoms of a Political Rabies attenuated and confused but not dead. Camilla is very happy for discovering "If I Were God" in time.

In mancanza di questo antidoto potente, tipi come il signor Esposito, ingegnere disoccupato, o come lo studente fuori corso e quarantatreenne Emilio Zork o come, be', praticamente tutti i suoi amici del piccolo gruppo, si sarebbero già affacciati un giorno a una finestra per mettersi di punto in bianco a sparare nel mucchio dei vicini di casa. In absence of this powerful antidote, characters such as signor Esposito, unemployed engineer, or forty-three-year-old drop out student Emilio Zork, or such as, well, practically all of her friends from the small group, would already have appeared one day at a window and start shooting into the midst of their neighbors out of the blue. And none would have put in a shot. But she.
