   "Well?" he asked.

   "Allora?" chiese.

   "This subhead seems a bit long," ventured Tom looking up from the sheaf of papers he held in his hands.

   Karl shifted his weight, brought his large fleshy hands together - fingertips touching, and countered "No."

   Looking up, his eyes met Karl's. They had that withdrawn, panicky look they often got when someone criticized his press releases or technical articles.

   "Don't get me wrong, I think you've got a very good article here. A superior article. It's just that... well, look at it this way; our clients are usually happy if we just talk on and on about their products, but the trade magazine editors don't look at it that way, they want something more snappy, something that seems to have some ideas in it - and this one certainly does, like back here," he flipped through a few pages of the manuscript, "where you talk about the rationale behind their design, that's exactly the sort of stuff the editors are looking for - apart from advertising for their magazines, that is."

   "Non mi fraintendere, penso che il tuo articolo sia buono. Qualità superiore.    Karl smiled a tight little smile.

   Karl abbozzò un sorriso.

   "And all these quotes you give what's his name, the president, they sound very authentic, very pithy. A sort of drama to them. Just the sort of thing the editors are looking for. So if we could do something about the passages where the reader's eyes start to glaze over..." Tom flipped quickly through the manuscript as if he were shuffling a deck of cards "...then we'll really have something - a major article that'll get published. Quickly. The client'll be happy as..." a pig at a trough, he thought, but didn't say it.

   "E tutte le citazioni di come si chiama, il presidente, suonano molto autentiche, molto accurate. Una sorta di commedia, per loro. Proprio quello che gli editori vanno cercando. Se dunque potessimo fare qualcosa per quei passaggi un po pesanti..."     Karl didn't say anything either. Their attention was drawn to the window where a hawk had suddenly appeared, gliding above the broad expanse of scrub brush that separated their office building from the freeway.

   Nemmeno Karl disse nulla. La loro attenzione fu richiamata alla finestra, dove un falco era apparso d'improvviso planando sull'ampia macchia che separava l'ufficio dall'autostrada.

   Surprisingly, Karl didn't debate, agreeing instead to take a second look at those passages that only a client could love. Agreeing with only a minor, rear guard skirmish about the beauties of language and exposition - beauties that few people, now days, could appreciate.

   "My daughter, too, has a deep and thoroughgoing appreciation of the beauties of language," he added. The hawk had gone.

   "She's been doing her doctoral work in linguistics at the University of Colorado," said Karl, still standing.

   There were two chairs in front of Tom's desk, empty and beckoning, but Karl was still standing.

   "That's great," Tom repeated.
   "Yes, she certainly has accomplished a lot."

   "Ottimo" ripetè Tom.
   "Sì, davvero un buon risultato".

   Karl glanced toward the window again. Freed from the anxiety that had gripped his eyes, his gaze traveled out and up - out the window and then, after a slight pause, slightly upward toward the heaven that stretched above the far horizon. A theatrical gesture, but one that seemed to come naturally for Karl.

   Karl guardò di nuovo alla finestra. Libero dall'ansia che gli aveva attanagliato gli occhi, il suo sguardo si portò fuori e verso l'alto - fuori dalla finestra e, dopo una breve pausa, leggeremente in su verso il cielo disteso sull'orizzonte lontano.    "She's worked very hard," he said without looking at Tom.

   Tom noticed the little red insistent message light on his phone was blinking but he chose to ignore it... and tried not to act as if he had noticed it and chosen to ignore it.

   "Very, so to speak, Bohemian," said Karl,  "they've had to scrimp and save to make it through."

   He paused.

   "She actually bore the major burden, helping him much more than he helped her, financially speaking."

   Tom nodded. Karl paused.

   Tom annuì. Karl fece una pausa.

   "He recently finished school," said Karl, addressing the window. "He was a semester ahead of her. As soon as he got his doctorate and got a job offer he dropped her for another woman."

   "Ha finito la scuola da poco" disse Karl, rivolto alla finestra. "Stava un semestre avanti a lei. Appena ha visto il dottorato e la prima offerta di lavoro l'ha piantata per un'altra".

   "That's rotten," said Tom.

   "Una carognata" disse Tom.

   Karl nodded.

   Karl annuì.

   "She took it pretty hard. In fact, after all of her hard work and all of the financial sacrifices - most of them, of course, on the part of her mother and I - she dropped out of work just a few weeks shy of her degree."

   "L'ha presa proprio male. Al segno che, dopo tutto quel lavoro e i sacrifici finanziari - gran parte, naturalmente, a carico mio e di sua madre - ha lasciato giù a poche settimane dalla laurea".

   Tom shook his head.

   Tom scosse la testa.

   "Well, I hope she gets herself together pretty quickly."

   "So do I," said Karl, "because last night she moved back in with me."

   He took his place in the usual spot, brought his fingertips together, and spoke: "Oh! I was coming to see if you'd had a chance to review my latest work but I note with pleasure that you are reviewing it now. Feel free to make any necessary changes, of course, though I'm sure that any changes will be minor ones for I think I've really gotten it right with this one. In fact, I think I've really outdone myself with this one, and I say that with, admittedly, no small degree of self-satisfaction."

   Prese posto al solito posto, congiunse la punta delle dita, e parlò: "Oh! Ero venuto a vedere se avevi avuto modo di esaminare il mio ultimo lavoro, ma constato con piacere che lo stai facendo ora. Cambia pure dove credi, naturalmente, anche se credo vi sia poco da cambiare perché stavolta penso proprio di averlo centrato. Credo proprio di aver superato me stesso, stavolta, e lo dico con una certa soddisfazione."

   Tom inhaled one of the cigarettes he was no longer smoking, one of the phantom cigarettes that popped up here and there throughout the day like a ghost of a lost limb, and nodded.

   Tom fece un tiro da una delle sigarette che aveva smesso di fumare, una delle sigarette virtuali che saltavano fuori qua e là durante il giorno come lo spettro di un arto andato, e annuì.

   "I'm glad that you got this done so quickly," he said, "this will keep the heat off us for quite awhile."

   "Mi fa piacere che l'abbia finito così in fretta," disse, "questo ci terrà al riparo per un poco."

   Karl reiterated the fact that, surely, not many changes would be needed, for he had - so to speak - hit one out of the ballpark with this article, then got off onto a different tack.

   "I'm reading the most abstruse and difficult book," he said in a sort of Disneyish that darned cat tone. Usually Karl equated difficult with bad when it came to language, though it was obvious that this book was difficult in a good way, not a bad way. "It's a study of the poetry of Wallace Stevens."

   "Sto leggendo un libro che più astruso e tosto non si può" disse in un tono da gatto con gli stivali. Di solito, in fatto di lingua, Karl equiparava il difficile al cattivo, anche se era ovvio che questo libro era difficile in modo buono, non in modo cattivo.    Oh shit! Wallace Stevens again. Ever since he had found out that Tom read books, even read poetry, he had been bringing up Wallace Stevens, that eminently well schooled and teachable insurance executive. He wondered if Karl had taught Wallace Stevens during his early stint as a college English instructor.

   Oh cazzo! Ancora Wallace Stevens. Da che aveva saputo che Tom leggeva libri, e poesia, anche, non faceva che tirare dentro Wallace Stevens, quel dirigente assicurativo eminentemente ben preparato e insegnabile. Si chiese se Karl avesse insegnato Wallace Stevens durante la sua parantesi di insegnante d'inglese all'università.

    "If you liked it so much why did you quit?" Tom had once asked him.

   "Perché hai smesso se ti piaceva così tanto?" Gli aveva chiesto Tom, una volta.

   "I liked everything but the students," he had said. "After awhile I couldn't stand the students and their questions. Getting up there in front of them every day with their gum chewing and their boredom and smart-ass questions and the sexual innuendoes from the coeds who were so taken with how they looked and their why this and why that and how will this affect my grade point average and my employability and not caring a damn about the great writers we were reading and whining on with their me me me attitudes. After awhile it took too great a toll on my nerves."

   "Mi andava tutto eccetto gli studenti " aveva risposto. "Dopo un pò non sopportavo più né loro né le loro domande. Dover star là, ogni giorno, davanti al loro ruminare chewing-gum, alla loro noia, alle loro furbate, alle metafore sessuali delle classi miste tutte prese dal corpo e dai loro perché questo e perché quello e che effetto avrà sulla mia media e sulla mia impiegabilità e fregandosene dei grandi scrittori che andavamo leggendo, e continuando a piagnucolare con i loro io quà e io là.    And now Karl himself was a student, sitting at the feet of businessmen waiting for a pat on his close cropped head for work that he insisted was good.

   E ora Karl si ritrovava studente, in attesa di una pacca sulla sua testa quasi rasata di qualche imprenditore, per un lavoro che insisteva a ritenere buono.

   Karl explained the book. Its index was filled with words like synecdoche. "The author explains," said Karl, "the ways in which Wallace Stevens transcends the realm of rational discourse and ascends, instead, into a realm of poetic discourse."

   Karl parlò del libro. L'indice era pieno di parole come sinèddoche "L'autore spiega," disse Karl, "i modi in cui Wallace Stevens trascende le pertinenze del discorso razionale per ascendere, invece, alla sfera del discorso poetico".

   Karl tapped his fingers together and added, "he uses a lot of Greek terms to do it." He smiled, confident that Tom knew at least some of the Greek terms that he himself struggled with.

   Karl tamburellò le dita tra di esse e aggiunse: "lo fa con largo uso di termini greci." Sorrise, confidando che Tom conoscesse almeno qualcuno dei termini greci che a egli stesso costavano fatica.

   "Karl," he said,  "why is it that when I mentioned Rimbaud and Ginsberg you said they were puerile poseurs for turning their backs on rationality?"

   "Karl" disse,  "come mai quando ho accennato a Rimbaud e Ginsberg hai detto che mancavano di spessore intelletuale per aver girato le spalle alla ragione?"

   Karl paused a moment, smiled a tolerant smile, then continued

   Insurance executive, thought Tom; then, after Wallace Stevens had had his brief time upon the stage, asked,  "How's you daughter adapting to her new circumstances?"

   Karl smiled again.

   "She seems to be adapting quite well," he said,  "it's her mother and I who are having trouble adapting."

   "Yes, she fancies herself a writer and she likes to work late at night. She sleeps late then sits at her computer till the wee hours of the morning, smoking. There hasn't been smoke in that house for ten years and now the place is filled with the scent of her clove cigarettes."

   "Si, lei si vede scrittrice e le piace lavorare la notte. Si alza tardi e fa le ore piccole al computer, fumando. Nessuno fumava in quella casa da dieci anni, e ora è pregna del profumo delle sue sigarette ai chiodi di garofano".

   "Clove?"

   "Chiodi di garofano?"

   Karl nodded. Tom didn't pursue it.

   Karl annuì. Tom fermò l'indagine.

   "She buys in to this whole romantic bohemian notion with all the trappings, sitting up smoking and sometimes drinking as she works on her writing or researching her religion."

   "È persa in questa romantica nozione esistenzialista, a fumare fino a tardi e a volte a bere mentre lavora alla scrittura o allo studio della sua religione".

   What religion is that, Tom thought, but he didn't have to ask.

   Che religione, pensò Tom, senza tuttavia dover chiedere.

   "She's a follower of the ancient Norse religion. She worships Odin."

   Tom’s eyes widened.

   Tom sgranò gli occhi.

   "Yes, and apparently there are many others who follow it as well. She stays in contact with them via the internet. Apparently when she needs guidance there are these beings called the Norns who help her out. It seems that if you are true to your faith then, when you need assistance, the Norns will provide you with some sort of sign."

   "Si, e sembra che sia in buona compagnia. Si sentono via Internet. Pare che quando lei ha bisogno di consigli ecco che arrivano questi esseri chiamati Norn. Pare che il fedele osservante, quando necessiti di assistenza, riceva dai Norm una specie di segnale".

   "These Norns are on the internet?"

   "E questi Norn stanno su internet?"

   Karl laughed.

   Karl rise.

   "No. Well, they could be, but she uses the internet to keep in touch with the people who share her beliefs. They've formed their own church in Iceland, for instance, a nation whose language has changed remarkable little in a thousand years. My daughter is fascinated by their language, as by all the Teutonic languages I might add... as am I. Surely the best words in the English language are not the frenchified and Latinate terms but the strong, honest Anglo-Saxon words, words like..."

   "No. Ecco, potrebbe essere, ma lei usa Internet per tenere i contatti coi sui compagni di fede. Hanno messo su una loro chiesa in Groenlandia, a esempio, una nazione in cui la lingua è pressoché immutata da un millennio. Mia figlia subisce il fascino della loro lingua, come di tutte le lingue teutoniche. Come me, potrei aggiungere. È certo che le parole migliori nella lingua inglese non siano i termini francesizzati o latinizzati ma le forti, oneste parole Anglo-Sassoni, parole come..."

   "But Karl, she receives signs from the Norns?"

   "Ma Karl, ella riceve segnali dai Norn?"

   "Yes, she claims she has," said Karl in his remarkably even, professorial way, "on several occasions. She's in communication with others who have also received signs. She's received more signs than most, though, because, as she informs me, she's a priestess. Her boyfriend in England is also a follower of this religion."

   "Così dice lei" rispose Karl alla sua maniera equilibrata e professionale, "in diverse occasioni. È in comunicazione con altri che a loro volta hanno avuto segnali. Lei è comunque tra quelli che ne hanno ricevuti di più perché, mi ha spegato, è una sacerdotessa. Anche il suo ragazzo, in Inghilterra, è un seguace di questa religione".

   "In England? She has a boyfriend in England?"

   "In Inghilterra? Ha un ragazzo in  Inghilterra?"

   Tom felt like a straight man in a well rehearsed comedy routine: he sat, Karl stood making small deliberate gestures with his hands and, with the aid of the right interjection, the story rolled forth.

   Tom si sentì come una spalla in una piece teatrale provata e riprovata: si sedette, Karl rimase in piedi a disegnare piccoli gesti deliberati con le mani e, con l'aiuto della giusta interiezióne, la storia andò avanti.

   "Yes," Karl said, raising his eyes briefly skyward in a humorous supplication. "That's our hope. They plan to get married. He has a computer business over there. They're going to get married and she's going to go over there to live with him and watch the tide roll in on the Saxon coast. That's a very alluring thought.  Apparently he lives on the east coast of England, the shores where my Saxon forebears first came storming ashore. I am, as you have perhaps discerned, very interested in my Teutonic heritage, so that's really a very alluring prospect. I envy her that. Of course her mother and I hope this happens very soon."

   "Si" disse Karl, levando brevemente gli occhi al cielo in una supplica scherzosa. "Noi ci speriamo. Pensano di sposarsi. Lui ha un'attività di computer. Si sposeranno e lei andrà a stare con lui e a guardare la marea sulla costa Sassone. Un pensiero molto allettante. Pare che lui stia sulla costa orientale inglese, dove i miei antenati Sassoni posero piede la prima volta. Sono, come avrai forse capito, molto interessato al mio retaggio Teutonico, la prospettiva è perciò molto allettante. Gliela invidio. Naturalmente io e sua madre speriamo che la cosa si faccia molto presto".

   "When do you think this will happen?"

   "Quando pensi che sarà?"

   "He says he's going to bring her over as soon as he has time to divorce his wife."

   "Dice che la chiamerà appena avrà il tempo di divorziare da sua moglie".
