Many years ago, at the conclusion of the season, the Great Khan ordered that the triumphs of that season be preserved for posterity, and that a display be created which would let future centuries know the high standard which the drama of his age had attained. As a consequence, the actors and actresses were strangled, then disemboweled and mummified and stuffed inside their wax effigies.

   Molti anni fa, alla fine della stagione, il Gran Cane ordinò che i successi di quella stagione fossero conservati per i posteri, e una mostra creata a testimonianza nei secoli dell'eccellenza raggiunta dall'arte drammatica nel suo tempo. Come risultato, gli attori e le attrici furono strozzati e poi mummificati e infilati a ripieno nelle loro effigi di cera.

   Now these coldly elegant personages perform in their static way for several weeks each year.  Eventually, however, the roof above the stage collapsed and for some reason it has never been repaired. The season, of course, extends through the fall to early winter, so when the curtain goes up the audience is, likely as not, greeted with a blast of cold air, or, on evenings when wind and rain join together, a cold mist or spray that intermittently advances from the stage like the patrols or probing attacks of a forward thrusting army,

   Ora questi personaggi elegantemente distaccati mettono in scena la loro statica rappresentazione per alcune settimane ogni anni anno. In seguito, però, il tetto sopra il palco venne giù e per qualche ragione non fu mai riparato. La stagione, naturalmente, copre l'autunno e gli inizi dell'inverno, e quando sale il sipario la platea, spesso e volentieri, è salutata da una sferzata di aria gelida, o, nelle sere in cui il vento fa il paio con la pioggia, da una gelida nebulizzazione che avanza dal palco, a intermittenza, come le pattuglie o le avanguardie di un'esercito all'offensiva.

   Most dramatic are those evenings at the tail end of the season when the troupe presents the most famous works in its repertoire and flecks of snow drift from the stage outward, flying, hovering, then alighting on the heads and coats of the audience. The audience, of course, all wear coats - heavy coats late in the season, lighter coats in the early weeks. As the play proceeds they begin to fidget, or hug and pat themselves to keep warm, but few leave before the end.

   Le più drammatiche sono quelle serate di tarda stagione in cui la compagnia presenta il repertorio di cartello, e fiocchi di neve transumano dal palco verso l'esterno, volando, pencolando, e atterrando sulle teste e sulle giacche del pubblico. Il pubblico è ovviamente in giacca - pesante, in tarda stagione, più leggera nelle settimane d'apertura. Mentre il dramma si svolge il pubblico comincia a agitarsi, o a scambiarsi abbracci e pacche per farsi caldo, ma quasi nessuno rinunzia all'epilogo.

   There has been some talk that the seasons are not what they used to be, that the overall quality of the performances has declined.  Some of these critics point to the curious reluctance of the Masters to renovate or replace the costumes, the backdrops, and the props. Wind, rain and snow have taken their toll on all of these.

   È stato detto che le stagioni non sono più quelle di una volta, che la qualità complessiva delle rappresentazioni sia in caduta. Qualche critica denuncia la curiosa riluttanza del Direttorio a rinnovare o rimpiazzare i costumi, le scenografie e le strutture. Vento, pioggia e neve hanno esatto il loro pedaggio su ciascuno di essi.

   Though the Masters are assiduous in assisting the players to their proper places before the curtain goes up - they never fail to guide the performers to the exact spot which long experience has determined to best mime or approximate the full action of that particular play - they ignore the merely technical or non-human aspects of the performance.

   Anche se i Direttori accompagnano con scrupolo gli attori al loro posto prima che il sipario venga alzato - non mancano mai di condurre gli attori nel punto esatto consigliato da lunga consuetudine per la migliore resa mimica di quella particolare commedia - costoro ignorano gli aspetti squisitamente tecnici o non-umani della rappresentazione.

   One school of thought, by turns viewed as bafflingly avant garde or hopelessly reactionary, commends this state of affairs; a contending school condemns it; most take no notice and express few opinions on the subject apart from some scattershot and partially formed preferences for colored spotlights, recorded music, more attractively printed programs, popcorn, and perhaps drinks served during intermission on the English model.

   Una scuola di pensiero, vista a turno come stupefacentemente innovativa o irrimediabilmente reazionaria, plaude allo status quo; una scuola contraria lo condanna; la maggioranza non se ne cura e è prodiga di pareri, se si eccettua qualche preferenza occasionale e non del tutto convinta per faretti colorati, registrazioni musicali, programmi stampati meglio, popcorn e, tutt'al più, le bibite nell'intervallo servite all'inglese.

   None of these things have come to pass, for the mass of people have preferences without passion, and anyway a whole new set of traditions has arisen to rectify these supposed defects. For instance, an amazing profusion of street vendors are to be found in the vicinity of the Great Theater, and the illicit consumption of alcohol during performances has evolved its own peculiar etiquette, a supple code which changes as to drink and means of consumption (flask, plastic bag, straw extending from hidden bottle) according to the play being performed.  Of course these responses and customs have evolved slowly; the plays themselves evolve more slowly still...

   Niente di tutto questo è passato, ché la massa non ci mette passione e, comunque, una nuova gamma di tradizioni è sorta a rettifica di quei difetti presunti. Si registra, per esempio, un sorprendente prolificare di venditori ambulanti nella zona del Grande Teatro, e il consumo illegale di alcolici durante le rappresentazioni ha sviluppato una sua peculiare etichetta, un codice flessibile che cambia per bevande e  mezzo di consumo (fiasco, sacchetto di plastica, cannuccia emergente da bottiglia nascosta) a seconda della commedia in cartello. Naturalmente queste risposte e tradizioni hanno preso piede col tempo; le commedie stesse si evolvono con lentezza ancora maggiore...
