In tutto il resto di quella giornata, Gertrude non ebbe un minuto di bene. Avrebbe desiderato riposar l'animo da tante commozioni, lasciar, per dir così, chiarire i suoi pensieri, render conto a se stessa di ciò che aveva fatto, di ciò che le rimaneva da fare, sapere ciò che volesse, rallentare un momento quella macchina che, appena avviata, andava così precipitosamente; ma non ci fu verso.

   During the remainder of that day, Gertrude had not one minute of quiet. She would have wanted to rest her mind from so much excitement, clear her thoughts, so to say, to render an account to herself of what she had done, and of what remained to be done, determine what she wanted, retard for a moment that machine, which, once started, was going so precipitously; but there was no opening.

   L'occupazioni si succedevano senza interruzione, s'incastravano l'una con l'altra. Subito dopo partito il principe, fu condotta nel gabinetto della principessa, per essere, sotto la sua direzione, pettinata e rivestita dalla sua propria cameriera. Non era ancor terminato di dar l'ultima mano, che furon avvertite ch'era in tavola. Gertrude passò in mezzo agl'inchini della servitù, che accennava di congratularsi per la guarigione, e trovò alcuni parenti più prossimi, ch'erano stati invitati in fretta, per farle onore, e per rallegrarsi con lei de' due felici avvenimenti, la ricuperata salute, e la spiegata vocazione.

   Occupations succeeded one another without interruption, interlocking. Immediately after the prince had departed, she was conducted to the proncess' dressing-room, to be, under her direction, combed and dressed by her maid. Scarcely was this business completed, when dinner was announced. Gertrude was greeted on her way by the bows of the servants, who expressed their congratulations for her recovery, and she found some of their closest relatives, who had been hastily invited, to do her honor, and to congratulate her for the two happy events, her restored health, and the said vocation.

   La sposina (così si chiamavan le giovani monacande, e Gertrude, al suo apparire, fu da tutti salutata con quel nome), la sposina ebbe da dire e da fare a rispondere a' complimenti che le fioccavan da tutte le parti. Sentiva bene che ognuna delle sue risposte era come un'accettazione e una conferma; ma come rispondere diversamente? Poco dopo alzati da tavola, venne l'ora della trottata. Gertrude entrò in carrozza con la madre, e con due zii ch'erano stati al pranzo.

   The young bride (as the novices were usually called, and Gertrude, on her appearance, was saluted by all by this name), the young bride had enough to do to reply to all the compliments that were addressed to her. She was fully sensible that every one of these answers was like an assent and confirmation; yet how to reply otherwise? Shortly after leaving the table, came the hour of the trot. Gertrude boarded the carriage with her mother, and with two uncles who had attended the dinner.

   Dopo un solito giro, si riuscì alla strada Marina, che allora attraversava lo spazio occupato ora dal giardin pubblico, ed era il luogo dove i signori venivano in carrozza a ricrearsi delle fatiche della giornata.    After a usual tour, they took the Strada Marina, which then crossed the space now occupied by the public gardens, and was the place where the gentry drove out for recreation after the labours of the day. The uncles also talked to Gertrude, as was to be expected on that day: and one of them, who seemed, more than the other, to be acquainted with everybody, every carriage, every livery, and had every moment something to say about Signior this and Lady that, suddenly turned to her and said: "Ah, you young rogue! you are turning your back on all these follies, you, crafty you! we poor worldly fellows are caught in the snare, and you are looking forward to a life full of blessing, and head for heaven in a carriage."

   Sul tardi, si tornò a casa; e i servitori, scendendo in fretta con le torce, avvertirono che molte visite stavano aspettando. La voce era corsa; e i parenti e gli amici venivano a fare il loro dovere. S'entrò nella sala della conversazione. La sposina ne fu l'idolo, il trastullo, la vittima. Ognuno la voleva per sé: chi si faceva prometter dolci, chi prometteva visite, chi parlava della madre tale sua parente, chi della madre tal altra sua conoscente, chi lodava il cielo di Monza, chi discorreva, con gran sapore, della gran figura ch'essa avrebbe fatta là. Altri, che non avevan potuto ancora avvicinarsi a Gertrude così assediata, stavano spiando l'occasione di farsi innanzi, e sentivano un certo rimorso, fin che non avessero fatto il loro dovere. A poco a poco, la compagnia s'andò dileguando; tutti se n'andarono senza rimorso, e Gertrude rimase sola co' genitori e il fratello.

   As evening approached they returned home; and the servants, hastily descending with the torches, announced that several visitors were awaiting their return. The voice had spread; and friends and relations came to pay their respects. They entered the parlour. The young bride became the idol, the game, the victim. Every one wanted to have her to himself: one promised her pleasures, another visits, one spoke of Madre this, her relation, another of Madre that, an acquaintance, one extolled the climate of Monza, another enlarged, with great eloquence, upon the distinctions she would there enjoy. Others, who had not yet succeeded in approaching Gertrude while thus besieged, stood watching their opportunity to come forth, and felt a certain remorse, until they had not fulfilled their duty. Little by little the party dispersed; they all left without remorse, and Gertrude remained alone with her parents and her brother.

   "Finalmente," disse il principe, "ho avuto la consolazione di veder mia figlia trattata da par sua. Bisogna però confessare che anche lei s'è portata benone, e ha fatto vedere che non sarà impicciata a far la prima figura, e a sostenere il decoro della famiglia".

   "At last," said the Prince, "I have had the consolation of seeing my daughter treated as becomes her rank. We must confess that she has conducted herself very well, and has shown that she will not be prevented making the premier figure, and maintaining the dignity of the family."

   Si cenò in fretta, per ritirarsi subito, ed esser pronti presto la mattina seguente.

   They had a quick supper, so as to retire early, that they might be ready in good time in the morning.

   Gertrude contristata, indispettita e, nello stesso tempo, un po' gonfiata da tutti que' complimenti, si rammentò in quel punto ciò che aveva patito dalla sua carceriera; e, vedendo il padre così disposto a compiacerla in tutto, fuor che in una cosa, volle approfittare dell'auge in cui si trovava, per acquietare almeno una delle passioni che la tormentavano. Mostrò quindi una gran ripugnanza a trovarsi con colei, lagnandosi fortemente delle sue maniere.

   Gertrude, heavy-hearted, piqued, and at the same time a little puffed up by all those compliments, at this moment remembered all she had suffered from her jailer; and, seeing her father so ready to gratify her in everything but one, she wanted to make use of the height she was at, to appease at least one of the passions that tormented her. She thus displayed a great aversion in being left alone with her maid, and complained loudly of her manners.

   "Come!" disse il principe: "v'ha mancato di rispetto colei! Domani, domani, le laverò il capo come va. Lasciate fare a me, che le farò conoscere chi è lei, e chi siete voi. E a ogni modo, una figlia della quale io son contento, non deve vedersi intorno una persona che le dispiaccia".

   "What!" said the Prince; "did she not treat you with respect? Tomorrow, tomorrow, I will reward her as she deserves. Leave it to me, and I will let her know who she is, and who you are. Anyway, a child with whom I am so well pleased must not be attended by a person she dislikes."

   Così detto, fece chiamare un'altra donna, e le ordinò di servir Gertrude; la quale intanto, masticando e assaporando la soddisfazione che aveva ricevuta, si stupiva di trovarci così poco sugo, in paragone del desiderio che n'aveva avuto.

   So saying, he sent for another woman, and gave her orders to wait upon Gertrude; who, in the mean while, chewing and savoring the satisfaction she had just received, was astonished at finding it so trifling, in comparison with the longing she had felt beforehand.

   Ciò che, anche suo malgrado, s'impossessava di tutto il suo animo, era il sentimento de' gran progressi che aveva fatti, in quella giornata, sulla strada del chiostro, il pensiero che a ritirarsene ora ci vorrebbe molta più forza e risolutezza di quella che sarebbe bastata pochi giorni prima, e che pure non s'era sentita d'avere.

   That which, even in spite of her, took possession of all of her soul, was the sentiment of her great progress, on this day, on the way to the cloister, the thought that to draw back now would require far greater strength and resolution than would have sufficed a few days before, and which, even then, she had not felt it in herself.
