Renzo lo ringraziò, fece le viste di far come gli era stato detto, prese in fatti da quella parte, con intenzione però d'avvicinarsi bensì a quella benedetta strada maestra, di non perderla di vista, di costeggiarla più che fosse possibile; ma senza mettervi piede.

   Renzo thanked him, pretended to do as he had been told, starting in fact in that direction, with the intention, however, of getting closer to that blessed highway, without losing sight of it, to keep parallel with its course as far as possible; but not to set foot in it.

   Il disegno era più facile da concepirsi che da eseguirsi. La conclusione fu che, andando così da destra a sinistra, e, come si dice, a zig zag, parte seguendo l'altre indicazioni che si faceva coraggio a pescar qua e là, parte correggendole secondo i suoi lumi, e adattandole al suo intento, parte lasciandosi guidar dalle strade in cui si trovava incamminato, il nostro fuggitivo aveva fatte forse dodici miglia, che non era distante da Milano più di sei; e in quanto a Bergamo, era molto se non se n'era allontanato. Cominciò a persuadersi che, anche in quella maniera, non se n'usciva a bene; e pensò a trovar qualche altro ripiego.

   The design was easier to conceive than to execute. The conclusion was that, by going thus from right to left, and, as they say, in a zigzag course, partly following the other directions he would find the heart to gather here and there, partly correcting them by his own judgment, and adapting them to his intent, partly allowing himself to be guided by the roads he was walking on, our fugitive had done perhaps twelve miles, when he was not distant from Milan more than six; and as to Bergamo, it was much had he not gone farther from it. He began to realize that, even by this method, he wouldn't come out of it well; and determined to find some other expedient.

   Quello che gli venne in mente, fu di scovar, con qualche astuzia, il nome di qualche paese vicino al confine, e al quale si potesse andare per istrade comunali: e domandando di quello, si farebbe insegnar la strada, senza seminar qua e là quella domanda di Bergamo, che gli pareva puzzar tanto di fuga, di sfratto, di criminale.

   That which came to his mind, was to get, through some tricks, the name of some village near the border, which he could reach by municipal roads: and by asking his way thither, he could learn of the way, without sowing here and there that inquiry about Bergamo, which seemed to him to smell so strongly of flight, of banishment, of criminal.

   Mentre cerca la maniera di pescar tutte quelle notizie, senza dar sospetto, vede pendere una frasca da una casuccia solitaria, fuori d'un paesello. Da qualche tempo, sentiva anche crescere il bisogno di ristorar le sue forze; pensò che lì sarebbe il luogo di fare i due servizi in una volta; entrò. Non c'era che una vecchia, con la rocca al fianco, e col fuso in mano. Chiese un boccone; gli fu offerto un po' di stracchino e del vin buono: accettò lo stracchino, del vino la ringraziò (gli era venuto in odio, per quello scherzo che gli aveva fatto la sera avanti); e si mise a sedere, pregando la donna che facesse presto. Questa, in un momento, ebbe messo in tavola; e subito dopo cominciò a tempestare il suo ospite di domande, e sul suo essere, e sui gran fatti di Milano: ché la voce n'era arrivata fin là. Renzo, non solo seppe schermirsi dalle domande, con molta disinvoltura; ma, approfittandosi della difficoltà medesima, fece servire al suo intento la curiosità della vecchia, che gli domandava dove fosse incamminato.

   While he is seeking the manner of fishing out all these information, without exciting suspicion, he sees a bush hanging from a solitary cottage, outside a little village. He had also for some time felt the need of restoring his strength; he thought that this would be the place to serve two purposes at once; he entered. There was no one but an old woman, with her distaff at her side, and the spindle in her hand. He asked for a mouthful; he was offered some stracchino-cheese and some good wine: he accepted the stracchino-cheese, but excused himself from taking any wine (he had come to hate it, for that trick it had played to him the previous night); and then sat down, begging the old woman to make haste. She served up his meal in a moment; and presently began to bombard her guest with questions, and about himself, and about the grand doings at Milan: that the buzz of them had reached here. Renzo, not only contrived to elude the questions; but, profiting from the difficulty itself, subserved to his intent the curiosity of the old woman, who was asking him where he was headed for.

   "Devo andare in molti luoghi," rispose: "e, se trovo un ritaglio di tempo, vorrei anche passare un momento da quel paese, piuttosto grosso, sulla strada di Bergamo, vicino al confine, però nello stato di Milano... Come si chiama?"

   "I have to go to many places," replied he: "and, if I can find a moment of time, I would like to pass a moment at that village, rather a large one, on the road to Bergamo, near the border, but in the state of Milan... What do they call it?"

   « Qualcheduno ce ne sarà », pensava intanto tra sé.
   "Gorgonzola, volete dire," rispose la vecchia.

   « there must be one there, » thought he to himself in the meanwhile.
   "Gorgonzola, you mean," replied the old woman.

   "Gorgonzola!" ripeté Renzo, quasi per mettersi meglio in mente la parola. "E' molto lontano di qui?" riprese poi.
   "Non lo so precisamente: saranno dieci, saranno dodici miglia. Se ci fosse qualcheduno de' miei figliuoli, ve lo saprebbe dire".

   "Gorgonzola!" repeated Renzo, as if to imprint the word better on his memory. "Is it very far from here?" continued he.
   "I don't know exactly: it may be ten, twelve miles. If one of my sons were here, he could tell you."

   "E credete che ci si possa andare per queste belle viottole, senza prender la strada maestra? dove c'è una polvere, una polvere! Tanto tempo che non piove!"
   "A me mi par di sì: potete domandare nel primo paese che troverete andando a diritta". E glielo nominò.
   "Va bene;" disse Renzo; s'alzò, prese un pezzo di pane che gli era avanzato della magra colazione, un pane ben diverso da quello che aveva trovato, il giorno avanti, appiè della croce di san Dionigi; pagò il conto, uscì, e prese a diritta. E, per non ve l'allungar più del bisogno, col nome di Gorgonzola in bocca, di paese in paese, ci arrivò, un'ora circa prima di sera.

   "And do you think I can go by these fine lanes, without taking the highway? There is such a dust there! such a dust! It's so long since it rained!"
   "I fancy you can: you can ask at the first village you came to, going to the right." And she named it.
   "That is fine;" said Renzo; he rose, took a piece of bread that had remained from his scanty breakfast, a very different bread from that which he had found, the previous day, at the foot of the cross of San Dionigi; he paid the bill, went out, and started to the right. And, by taking care not to wander from it more than was necessary, with the name of Gorgonzola in his mouth, from village to village, he arrived there, an hour before dusk.

   Già cammin facendo, aveva disegnato di far lì un'altra fermatina, per fare un pasto un po' più sostanzioso. Il corpo avrebbe anche gradito un po' di letto; ma prima che contentarlo in questo, Renzo l'avrebbe lasciato cader rifinito sulla strada. Il suo proposito era d'informarsi all'osteria, della distanza dell'Adda, di cavar destramente notizia di qualche traversa che mettesse là, e di rincamminarsi da quella parte, subito dopo essersi rinfrescato.

   During his walk, he had resolved to make another stop here, to have a more substantial meal. His body also craved a little rest; but before he would fulfil this desire, Renzo would have dropped exhausted to the ground. His purpose was to get some information at the inn, about the distance of the Adda, to ascertain dexterously if there were any cross-road that led to it, and to set off again in that direction, immediately after his repast.

   Nato e cresciuto alla seconda sorgente, per dir così, di quel fiume, aveva sentito dir più volte, che, a un certo punto, e per un certo tratto, esso faceva confine tra lo stato milanese e il veneto: del punto e del tratto non aveva un'idea precisa; ma, allora come allora, l'affar più urgente era di passarlo, dovunque si fosse. Se non gli riusciva in quel giorno, era risoluto di camminare fin che l'ora e la lena glielo permettessero: e d'aspettar poi l'alba, in un campo, in un deserto; dove piacesse a Dio; pur che non fosse un'osteria.

   Born and brought up at the second source, so to say, of this river, he had often heard it said, that, at a certain point, and for a certain distance, it served as a boundary between the Milanese state and Veneto: of the point and the length he had no distinct idea; but, for the present, the most urgent affaire was to pass it, wherever it were. If he did not succeed in it that day, he would walk as long as the hour and his strength would allow him: and then await  daybreak, in a field, in a desert; wherever God pleased; provided it were not an inn.

   Fatti alcuni passi in Gorgonzola, vide un'insegna, entrò; e all'oste, che gli venne incontro, chiese un boccone, e una mezzetta di vino: le miglia di più, e il tempo gli avevan fatto passare quell'odio così estremo e fanatico.

   After walking a few paces at Gorgonzola, he saw a sign, entered; and of the innkeeper, who approached him, asked a mouthful, and a half-measure of wine: the additional miles and the time having overcome that extreme and fanatical hatred.

   "Vi prego di far presto," soggiunse: "perché ho bisogno di rimettermi subito in istrada".
   E questo lo disse, non solo perché era vero, ma anche per paura che l'oste, immaginandosi che volesse dormir lì, non gli uscisse fuori a domandar del nome e del cognome, e donde veniva, e per che negozio... Alla larga!

   "I beg you to be quick," added he: "for I must be on my way very soon."
   And this he said not only because it was the truth, but also for fear the host, imagining that he was going to pass the night there, should come and ask him his name and surname, and where he came from, and on what business... Enough of that!

   L'oste rispose a Renzo, che sarebbe servito; e questo si mise a sedere in fondo della tavola, vicino all'uscio: il posto de' vergognosi.

   The innkeeper replied to Renzo that he would be served; and the latter down at the end of the table, near the door: the place of the bashful.

   C'erano in quella stanza alcuni sfaccendati del paese, i quali, dopo aver discusse e commentate le gran notizie di Milano del giorno avanti, si struggevano di sapere un poco come fosse andata anche in quel giorno; tanto più che quelle prime eran più atte a stuzzicar la curiosità, che a soddisfarla: una sollevazione, né soggiogata né vittoriosa, sospesa più che terminata dalla notte; una cosa tronca, la fine d'un atto piuttosto che d'un dramma. Un di coloro si staccò dalla brigata, s'accostò al soprarrivato, e gli domandò se veniva da Milano.

   There were, in that lounge, some idlers from the village, who, having discussed and commented upon the grand news from Milan of the previous day, were longing to know a little how it had gone on that day as well; the more so, as their first information was rather fitted to excite curiosity, than to satisfy it: an uprising, neither subdued nor triumphant, suspended more than terminated by the night; a mutilated thing, the end of an act rather than of a drama. One of these detached himself from the brigade, accosted the newcomer, and asked him if he came from Milan.

   "Io?" disse Renzo sorpreso, per prender tempo a rispondere.

   "I?" said Renzo surprised, to gain time for a reply.

   "Voi, se la domanda è lecita".

   "You, if the question is allowable."

   Renzo, tentennando il capo, stringendo le labbra, e facendone uscire un suono inarticolato, disse:

   Renzo, shaking his head, compressing his lips, and uttering an inarticulate sound, said:

   "Milano, da quel che ho sentito dire... non dev'essere un luogo da andarci in questi momenti, meno che per una gran necessità".

   "Milan, from what I hear... it mustn't be a place to go at present, unless in case of great necessity."

   "Continua dunque anche oggi il fracasso?" domandò, con più istanza, il curioso.
   "Bisognerebbe esser là, per saperlo," disse Renzo.

   "Does the uproar continue, then, today?" asked more eagerly, the curious.
   "One should have been there to know that," said Renzo.

   "Ma voi, non venite da Milano?"
   "Vengo da Liscate," rispose lesto il giovine, che intanto aveva pensata la sua risposta.

   "But you, don't you come from Milan?"
   "I come from Liscate," replied promptly the youth, who had in the mean while decided upon his reply.

   Ne veniva in fatti, a rigor di termini, perché c'era passato; e il nome l'aveva saputo, a un certo punto della strada, da un viandante che gli aveva indicato quel paese come il primo che doveva attraversare, per arrivare a Gorgonzola.

   He had in deed come from there, strictly speaking, because he had passed it; and the name he had learnt from a traveller, on the way, who had mentioned that village as the first he must pass on his way to Gorgonzola.

   "Oh!" disse l'amico; come se volesse dire: faresti meglio a venir da Milano, ma pazienza. "E a Liscate," soggiunse, "non si sapeva niente di Milano?"
   "Potrebb'essere benissimo che qualcheduno là sapesse qualche cosa," rispose il montanaro: "ma io non ho sentito dir nulla".

   "Oh!" said his friend; as if he had wanted to say: You'd have done better if you had come from Milan, but patience. "And at Liscate," added he, "did you hear nothing about Milan?"
   "There may very likely have been somebody who knew something about it," replied the mountaineer: "but I heard nothing."

   E queste parole le proferì in quella maniera particolare che par che voglia dire: ho finito.
   Il curioso ritornò al suo posto; e, un momento dopo, l'oste venne a mettere in tavola.

   And this words he proffered in that particular manner which seems to mean: I've finished.
   The curious returned to his seat; and, a moment later, the host came to set out his meal.
