Renzo, who was bellowing at night in someone else's house, who had sneaked in, and who had held the master himself confined in a room, has all the appearance of an oppressor; yet, in the end, he was the oppressed.

Don Abbondio, sorpreso, messo in fuga, spaventato, mentre attendeva tranquillamente a' fatti suoi, parrebbe la vittima; eppure, in realtà, era lui che faceva un sopruso.

Don Abbondio, taken by surprise, put to flight, frightened, while tranquilly attending to his own affairs, would appear as the victim; yet, in reality, it was he who was doing an abuse.

Così va spesso il mondo... voglio dire, così andava nel secolo decimo settimo.

Thus often goes the world... I mean to say, thus it went in the seventeenth century.

   L'assediato, vedendo che il nemico non dava segno di ritirarsi, aprì una finestra che guardava sulla piazza della chiesa, e si diede a gridare: "aiuto! aiuto!"

   The besieged, seeing that the enemy gave no sign of pulling back, opened a window that looked onto the churchyard, and shouted out: "Help! help!"

Era il più bel chiaro di luna; l'ombra della chiesa, e più in fuori l'ombra lunga ed acuta del campanile, si stendeva bruna e spiccata sul piano erboso e lucente della piazza: ogni oggetto si poteva distinguere, quasi come di giorno.

It was the most lovely moonshine; the shadow of the church, and further out the long and sharp shadow of the bell-tower, lay dark and well-defined on the grassy and bright surface of the square: every objects could be distinguished, almost as in the light of day.

Ma, fin dove arrivava lo sguardo, non appariva indizio di persona vivente.

But, as far as the eye could see, there appeared no sign of living person.

Contiguo però al muro laterale della chiesa, e appunto dal lato che rispondeva verso la casa parrocchiale, era un piccolo abituro, un bugigattolo, dove dormiva il sagrestano.

Contiguous though to the lateral wall of the church, and on the same side as the Parsonage, was a small dwelling, a pokey little quarter, where the sexton slept.

Fu questo riscosso da quel disordinato grido, fece un salto, scese il letto in furia, aprì l'impannata d'una sua finestrina, mise fuori la testa, con gli occhi tra' peli, e disse:" cosa c'è?"

He was aroused by that unusual cry, jumped up, got hastly out of bed, opened the sash of a little window of his, put his head out, his eyes half closed, and cried out: "What is the matter?"

   "Correte, Ambrogio! aiuto! gente in casa", gridò verso lui don Abbondio.

   "Run, Ambrogio! help! people in the house," cried Don Abbondio in his direction.

   "Vengo subito", rispose quello; tirò indietro la testa, richiuse la sua impannata, e, quantunque mezzo tra 'l sonno, e più che mezzo sbigottito, trovò su due piedi un espediente per dar più aiuto di quello che gli si chiedeva, senza mettersi lui nel tafferuglio, quale si fosse.

   "Coming directly," replied that one; he pulled back his head, shut the window, and, although half asleep, and more than half dismayed, he found there and then an expedient to give more aid than had been asked of him, without putting himself into the affray, whatever it might be.

He Seizes his breeches, which he kept on the bed; he tuckes them under his arm, like a gala hat, and down bounding by a little wooden ladder; he runs to the belfry, grabs the rope to the larger of the two bells, and sounds the tocsin.

   Ton, ton, ton, ton: i contadini balzano a sedere sul letto; i giovinetti sdraiati sul fenile, tendon l'orecchio, si rizzano.

   Ton, ton, ton, ton: the peasants sprang up in their beds; the boys stretched in the hay-loft, listen eagerly, leap on their feet.

"Cos'è? Cos'è? Campana a martello! fuoco? ladri? banditi?"

"What's the matter? what's the matter? The bell's ringing! Fire? Thieves? Bandits?"

Molte donne consigliano, pregano i mariti, di non moversi, di lasciar correre gli altri: alcuni s'alzano, e vanno alla finestra: i poltroni, come se si arrendessero alle preghiere, ritornan sotto: i più curiosi e più bravi scendono a prender le forche e gli schioppi, per correre al rumore: altri stanno a vedere.

Many a woman offer counsel, beg their husbands, not to stir, to let others run: some get up, and go to the window: the idlers, as if yielding to entreaties, slip back: the more curious and the more valiant go down to get pitchforks and muskets, to run to the uproar: others wait and see.

   Ma, prima che quelli fossero all'ordine, prima anzi che fosser ben desti, il rumore era giunto agli orecchi d'altre persone che vegliavano, non lontano, ritte e vestite: i bravi in un luogo, Agnese e Perpetua in un altro.

   But, before those were all ready, before, rather, that they were well awake, the noise had reached the ears of other persons on the vigil, not far, dressed and on their feet: the bravoes in one place, Agnese and Perpetua in another.

We shall first briefly relate the movements of the bravoes, from the moment we left them, some in the old cottage, and some at the inn.

   These three, upon seeing all the doors shut and the street deserted, went out quickly, pretending to be late, and voicing they were headed home; they took for the village, to be assured that all had retired, and, in fact, they met not one living soul, nor heard the least noise.

They also passed, very softly, before our little house: the quietest of all, since no one was there.

Subito, questo si mise in testa un cappellaccio, sulle spalle un sanrocchino di tela incerata, sparso di conchiglie; prese un bordone da pellegrino, disse: "andiamo da bravi: zitti, e attenti agli ordini", s'incamminò il primo, gli altri dietro; e, in un momento, arrivarono alla casetta, per una strada opposta a quella per cui se n'era allontanata la nostra brigatella, andando anch'essa alla sua spedizione.

Presently, this put on a slouched hat, threw on his shoulders a pilgrim's dress of oilcloth, scattered over with cockle-shells; took a pilgrim's staff, said: "Let us go like bravoes: quiet, and attentive to orders", the first started forward, the others behind; and, in a moment, they reached the cottage, by a road opposite to the one our little party had taken when setting out on their expedition.

   Il Griso trattenne la truppa, alcuni passi lontano, andò innanzi solo ad esplorare, e, visto tutto deserto e tranquillo di fuori fece venire avanti due di quei tristi, diede loro ordine di scalar adagino il muro che chiudeva il cortiletto, e, calati dentro, nascondersi in un angolo, dietro un folto fico, sul quale aveva messo l'occhio, la mattina.

   Griso held back his troops, a few steps away, and went forward alone to explore, and, finding all outside deserted and still, he called forth two of those wretched, ordered them to quietly scale the wall that surrounded the little courtyard, and, once descended within, to conceal themselves behind a thick fig-tree, which he had noticed in the morning.

Ciò fatto, picchiò pian piano, con intenzione di dirsi un pellegrino smarrito, che chiedeva ricovero, fino a giorno.

This done, he knocked gently, with the intention of introducing himself as a lost pilgrim, and begged a lodging for the night.

    Nessun risponde: ripicchia un po' più forte; nemmeno uno zitto. Allora, va a chiamare un terzo malandrino, lo fa scendere nel cortiletto, come gli altri due, con l'ordine di sconficcare adagio il paletto, per aver libero l'ingresso e la ritirata.

   No one replies; he knocks a little more loudly; not a whisper. He then calls a third rascal, makes him descent into the little yard, as the other two, with orders to unfasten the bolt with care, so that they might have free ingress and escape.

Tutto s'eseguisce con gran cautela, e con prospero successo.

All is executed with great caution, and prosperous success.

He goes to call the others, lets them enter with him, sends them to hide besides the rest; closes the street-door very softly, places two sentinels inside; and goes straight to the door on the ground floor.

Picchia anche lì, e aspetta: e' poteva ben aspettare. Sconficca pian pianissimo anche quell'uscio: nessuno di dentro dice: chi va là?; nessuno si fa sentire: meglio non può andare.

He knocks here, too, and waits: and long enough he might wait. He then very gently opened this door: nobody within says: Who's there?; no one is to be heard: nothing could be better.

Avanti dunque: «st», chiama quei del fico, entra con loro nella stanza terrena, dove, la mattina, aveva scelleratamente accattato quel pezzo di pane.

Forward then: «Come on,» calls he to those of the fig-tree, he enters with them the ground room, where, in the morning, he had so basely obtained that piece of bread.

Cava fuori esca, pietra, acciarino e zolfanelli, accende un suo lanternino, entra nell'altra stanza più interna, per accertarsi che nessun ci sia: non c'è nessuno.

Pulls out tinder, flint and matches, lits a small lantern of his, steps into the next room to ensure that no one was there: there is no one there.

Torna indietro, va all'uscio di scala, guarda, porge l'orecchio: solitudine e silenzio.

Back he goes, reaches the door to the stairs, gazes, listens: solitude and silence.

Lascia due altre sentinelle a terreno, si fa venir dietro il Grignapoco, ch'era un bravo del contado di Bergamo, il quale solo doveva minacciare, acchetare, comandare, essere in somma il dicitore, affinché il suo linguaggio potesse far credere ad Agnese che la spedizione veniva da quella parte.

Leaves two more sentries in the lower room, bids Grignapoco to follow him, a bravo from the district of Bergamo, whose office it was to threaten, appease, command; to be, in short, the spokesman, so that his language might give Agnese the idea that the expedition came from that part.

   Con costui al fianco, e gli altri dietro, il Griso sale adagio adagio, bestemmiando in cuor suo ogni scalino che scricchiolasse, ogni passo di que' mascalzoni che facesse rumore.

   With this one at his side, and the others behind, Griso ascends slowly slowly, cursing in his heart every creak of the steps, every tread of those villains that made the least noise.

Finalmente è in cima. Qui giace la lepre. Spinge mollemente l'uscio che mette alla prima stanza; l'uscio cede, si fa spiraglio: vi mette l'occhio; è buio: vi mette l'orecchio, per sentire se qualcheduno russa, fiata, brulica là dentro; niente.

At last he is at the top. Here is the danger. He gently pushes the door that leads into the first room; the door yields, becomes a chink: he gazes in; it is dark: he listens attentively, to catch a snore, a breath, a stirring within; nothing.

Dunque avanti: si mette la lanterna davanti al viso, per vedere, senza esser veduto, spalanca l'uscio, vede un letto; addosso: il letto è fatto e spianato, con la rimboccatura arrovesciata, e composta sul capezzale.

Forward then: he puts the lantern before his face, to see, without being seen, he opens the door wide, sees a bed; looks upon it: the bed is made and smooth, with the hem turned down and arranged upon the pillow.

Si stringe nelle spalle, si volta alla compagnia, accenna loro che va a vedere nell'altra stanza, e che gli vengan dietro pian piano; entra, fa le stesse cerimonie, trova la stessa cosa.

He shrugs his shoulders, turns to his companions, beckons to them that he is going to look in the other room, and that they follow him quietly; in he goes, uses the same precautions, meets with the same success.

"Che diavolo è questo?" dice allora: "che qualche cane traditore abbia fatto la spia?"

"What the devil is this?" says he then: "some traitorous dog has given us away?"

Si metton tutti, con men cautela, a guardare, a tastare per ogni canto, buttan sottosopra la casa.

They all begin, with less caution, to look, to pry into every corner, turning the house upside down.

   Mentre costoro sono in tali faccende, i due che fan la guardia all'uscio di strada, sentono un calpestìo di passini frettolosi, che s'avvicinano in fretta; s'immaginano che, chiunque sia, passerà diritto; stan quieti, e, a buon conto, si mettono all'erta.

   While these are thus engaged, the two who were on guard at the street-door, hear hasty footsteps, approaching quickly; they imagine that, whoever it was, he would pass by; they kept quiet, and, in any case, remain on the watch.

In fatti, il calpestìo si ferma appunto all'uscio.

In fact, the footsteps stop exactly at the door.

Era Menico che veniva di corsa, mandato dal padre Cristoforo ad avvisar le due donne che, per l'amor del cielo, scappassero subito di casa, e si rifugiassero al convento, perché... il perché lo sapete.

It was Menico arriving in great haste, sent by Father Cristoforo to advise the two women that, for Heaven's sake, leave the house at once, and take refuge in the convent, because... the because you know about.

Prende la maniglia del paletto, per picchiare, e se lo sente tentennare in mano, schiodato e sconficcato.

He takes the handle of the latch, to knock, and feels it shake in his hand, unfastened and broken open.

«Che è questo?» pensa; e spinge l'uscio con paura: quello s'apre.

«What is this?» thinks he; and he pushes the door in fear: that opens up.

Menico mette il piede dentro, in gran sospetto, e si sente a un punto acchiappar per le braccia, e due voci sommesse, a destra e a sinistra, che dicono, in tono minaccioso: "zitto! o sei morto".

Menico puts one foot inside, with great suspicion, and he feels himself seized in a moment by the arms, and hears two smothered voices, on his right and left, saying, in a threatening tone: "Hold your tongue! or you are dead."

Lui in vece caccia un urlo: uno di que' malandrini gli mette una mano alla bocca; l'altro tira fuori un coltellaccio, per fargli paura.

He instead lets out a cry: one of those rascals puts a hand on his mouth; the other pulls out a large knife, to scare him out.

   Il garzoncello trema come una foglia, e non tenta neppur di gridare; ma, tutt'a un tratto, in vece di lui, e con ben altro tono, si fa sentir quel primo tocco di campana così fatto, e dietro una tempesta di rintocchi in fila.

   The poor boy trembles like a leaf, and does not even attempt a cry; but, all at once, in his stead, and with a far different tone,  that first sound of the bell before described is heard, followed by a tempest of tolls in close succession.

Chi è in difetto è in sospetto, dice il proverbio milanese: all'uno e all'altro furfante parve di sentire in que' tocchi il suo nome, cognome e soprannome: lasciano andar le braccia di Menico, ritirano le loro in furia, spalancan la mano e la bocca, si guardano in viso, e corrono alla casa, dov'era il grosso della compagnia.

If the cap fits, put it on, says the Milanese proverb: each of the villains seemed to hear in those tolls his name, surname and nickname: they let go of Menico's arms, hastily drop their own, open hand and mouth, stare at each other, and run to the house, where the bulk of their company was.

   Menico, via a gambe per la strada, alla volta del campanile, dove a buon conto qualcheduno ci doveva essere.

   Menico took to his legs, and fled to the street, towards the belfry, trusting someone would be there.

Agli altri furfanti che frugavan la casa, dall'alto al basso, il terribile tocco fece la stessa impressione: si confondono, si scompigliano, s'urtano a vicenda: ognuno cerca la strada più corta, per arrivare all'uscio.

On the other scoundrels who were rummaging the house, from top to bottom, the terrible toll made the same impression: confused and alarmed, they stumble into one another: each one seeking the shortest way to the door.

Eppure era tutta gente provata e avvezza a mostrare il viso; ma non poterono star saldi contro un pericolo indeterminato, e che non s'era fatto vedere un po' da lontano, prima di venir loro addosso.

Yet they were all people of proved boldness and accustomed to show their faces; but they could not stand against an indefinite danger, which had not been viewed at a little distance, before coming upon them.

   Ci volle tutta la superiorità del Griso a tenerli insieme, tanto che fosse ritirata e non fuga.

   It required all the authority of Griso to keep them together, so that it might be a retreat and not a flight.

Come il cane che scorta una mandra di porci, corre or qua or là a quei che si sbandano; ne addenta uno per un orecchio, e lo tira in ischiera; ne spinge un altro col muso; abbaia a un altro che esce di fila in quel momento; così il pellegrino acciuffa un di coloro, che già toccava la soglia, e lo strappa indietro; caccia indietro col bordone uno e un altro che s'avviavan da quella parte: grida agli altri che corron qua e là, senza saper dove; tanto che li raccozzò tutti nel mezzo del cortiletto.

Just as a dog urging a drove of pigs, runs here and there after those that break the ranks; bites one by one ear, and drags him into the herd; propels another with his nose; barks at another that leaves the line at that moment; so the pilgrim gets hold of one of his troop just passing the threshold, and draws him back; throws back with his staff one and one other who were starting in that direction: yells at the others who are running here and there, knowing not whither; and finally succeeded in assembling them all in the middle of the little courtyard.

"Presto, presto! pistole in mano, coltelli in pronto, tutti insieme; e poi anderemo: così si va. Chi volete che ci tocchi, se stiam ben insieme, sciocconi?

"Fast! fast! pistols in hand, daggers in readiness, all together; and then we'll begone: that is the way. Who would dare to touch us, if we are all together, you fool?

Ma, se ci lasciamo acchiappare a uno a uno, anche i villani ce ne daranno.

But, if we let them catch us one by one, even the villagers will have a pass on us.

Vergogna! Dietro a me, e uniti".

Shame on you! Stay behind, and keep together."

Dopo questa breve aringa, si mise alla fronte, e uscì il primo.

After this brief harangue, he took the front, and led the way out.

La casa, come abbiam detto, era in fondo al villaggio; il Griso prese la strada che metteva fuori, e tutti gli andaron dietro in buon ordine.

The house, as we have said, was at the end of the village; Griso took the road that led out of it, and all followed him in good order.
