The assassins pursue Pinocchio; and having overtaken him hang him to a branch of the big Oak.

Allora il burattino, perdutosi d'animo, fu proprio sul punto di gettarsi in terra e di darsi per vinto, quando, nel girare gli occhi all'intorno, vide fra mezzo al verde cupo degli alberi biancheggiare in lontananza una casina candida come la neve.

At this point the marionette, having lost heart, was truly on the point of throwing himself on the ground and giving himself up, when, in gazing about, he saw amidst the sombre green of the trees the white of a little house as white as snow glow at some distance.

"Se io avessi tanto fiato da arrivare fino a quella casa, forse sarei salvo!" disse dentro di sé.

"If only I had wind enough to reach that house, perhaps I should be saved!" he said to himself.

E senza indugiare un minuto, riprese a correre per il bosco a carriera distesa.

And without delaying a minute, he resumed his flight through the wood at full speed.

E gli assassini sempre dietro.

And the assassins after him.

Dopo una corsa disperata di quasi due ore, finalmente, tutto trafelato, arrivò alla porta di quella casina e bussò.

After a desperate race of nearly two hours he arrived, at length, out of breath, at the door of that little house, and knocked.

Nessuno rispose.

No one answered.

Tornò a bussare con maggior violenza, perché sentiva avvicinarsi il rumore dei passi e il respiro grosso e affannoso de' suoi persecutori.

He knocked again with more violence, for he heard the sound of steps and the heavy panting of his persecutors getting closer.

Lo stesso silenzio.

The same silence.

Avvedutosi che il bussare non giovava a nulla, cominciò per disperazione a dare calci e zuccate nella porta.

Seeing that knocking was all in vain, he began in desperation to kick and bang his head against the door.

Allora si affacciò alla finestra una bella Bambina, coi capelli turchini e il viso bianco come un'immagine di cera, gli occhi chiusi e le mani incrociate sul petto, la quale, senza muover punto le labbra, disse con una vocina che pareva venisse dall'altro mondo:

Then a beautiful Maiden appeared at the window, with azure hair and the face as white as a waxen image, her eyes closed and her hands crossed over her breast, who, without moving her lips in the least, said in a little voice that seemed to come from the other world:

"In questa casa non c'è nessuno. Sono tutti morti".

"There is no one in this house. They are all dead."

"Aprimi almeno tu!" gridò Pinocchio piangendo e raccomandandosi.

"Open the door for me yourself, at least!" shouted Pinocchio, crying and imploring.

"Sono morta anch'io".

"I am dead also."

"Morta? e allora che cosa fai costì alla finestra?"

"Dead? Then what are you doing there at the window?"

"Aspetto la bara che venga a portarmi via".

"I am waiting for the bier to come to carry me away."

Appena detto così, la Bambina disparve, e la finestra si richiuse senza far rumore.

Having said this, the little Girl disappeared, and the window was closed again without a sound.

"O bella Bambina dai capelli turchini," gridava Pinocchio "aprimi per carità. Abbi compassione di un povero ragazzo inseguito dagli assass..."

"Oh! beautiful maiden with Azure Hair," cried Pinocchio, "open the door for pity's sake. Have compassion on a poor boy pursued by assass..."

Ma non poté finir la parola, perché sentì afferrarsi per il collo, e le solite due vociacce che gli brontolarono minacciosamente:

But he could not finish the word, for he felt himself seized by the collar, and the same two horrible voices that growled to him threateningly:

"Ora non ci scappi più!"

"You shall not escape from us again!"

Il burattino, vedendosi balenare la morte dinanzi agli occhi, fu preso da un tremito così forte, che nel tremare, gli sonavano le giunture delle sue gambe di legno e i quattro zecchini che teneva nascosti sotto la lingua.

The marionette, seeing death flashing before his eyes, was taken with such a violent fit of trembling that, as he trembled, the joints of his wooden legs rattled and the four sovereigns that he kept hidden under his tongue tinkled.

"Dunque?" gli domandarono gli assassini "vuoi aprirla la bocca, sì o no? Ah! non rispondi?... Lascia fare: ché questa volta te la faremo aprir noi!..."

"Now then," asked him the assassins, "will you open your mouth, yes or no? Ah! You do not answer?... Leave it to us: this time we will force you to open it!..."

E cavati fuori due coltellacci lunghi lunghi e affilati come rasoi, zaff e zaff..., gli affibbiarono due colpi nel mezzo alle reni.

And drawing out two very long hideous knives as sharp as razors, zzzac and zzzac..., they struck two blows on his lower back.

Ma il burattino per sua fortuna era fatto d'un legno durissimo, motivo per cui le lame, spezzandosi, andarono in mille schegge e gli assassini rimasero col manico dei coltelli in mano, a guardarsi in faccia.

But the marionette, luckily for him, was made of a very hard wood, hence the blades broke into a thousand pieces, and the assassins were left with the handle of the knives in their hands, staring at each other.

"Ho capito" disse allora un di loro "bisogna impiccarlo! Impicchiamolo!"

"I understand," said then one of them, "we must hang him! let us hang him!"

"Impicchiamolo!" ripeté l'altro.

"Let us hang him!" repeated the other.

Detto fatto, gli legarono le mani dietro le spalle, e, passatogli un nodo scorsoio intorno alla gola, lo attaccarono penzoloni al ramo di una grossa pianta detta la Quercia grande.

No sooner said than done, they tied his hands behind his back, and, having passed a running noose round his throat, they hung him to the branch of a big tree called the Big Oak.

Poi si posero là, seduti sull'erba, aspettando che il burattino facesse l'ultimo gambetto: ma il burattino, dopo tre ore, aveva sempre gli occhi aperti, la bocca chiusa e sgambettava più che mai.

Then they stood there, sitting on the grass, waiting for the marionette to give his last kick: but the marionette, at the end of three hours, had still his eyes open, his mouth shut and he was kicking more than ever.

Annoiati finalmente di aspettare, si voltarono a Pinocchio e gli dissero sghignazzando:

Tired of waiting, at last, they turned to Pinocchio and said to him sneering:

"Addio a domani. Quando domani torneremo qui, si spera che ci farai la garbatezza di farti trovare bell'e morto e con la bocca spalancata".

"Good-by till to-morrow. When we return to-morrow, we hope that you will be polite enough to let us find you good and dead and with your mouth wide open."

E se ne andarono.

And they walked off.

Intanto s'era levato un vento impetuoso di tramontana, che soffiando e mugghiando con rabbia, sbatacchiava in qua e in là il povero impiccato, facendolo dondolare violentemente come il battaglio d'una campana che suona a festa.

In the meantime a strong northerly wind had began to blow which, blowing and howling with rage, flapped the poor hanged from side to side, making him swing violently like the clapper of a pealing bell.

E quel dondolìo gli cagionava acutissimi spasimi, e il nodo scorsoio, stringendosi sempre più alla gola, gli toglieva il respiro.

And that swinging caused him the sharpest spasms, and the running noose, becoming tighter and tighter round his throat, took away his breath.

A poco a poco gli occhi gli si appannarono; e sebbene sentisse avvicinarsi la morte, pure sperava sempre che da un momento all'altro sarebbe capitata qualche anima pietosa a dargli aiuto.

Little by little his eyes grew dim; and although he felt death creeping nearer, he still hoped that some compassionate soul would happen by and help him out.

Ma quando, aspetta aspetta, vide che non compariva nessuno, proprio nessuno, allora gli tornò in mente il suo povero babbo... e balbettò quasi moribondo:

But when, after waiting and waiting, he saw that no one appeared, no one at all, then he remembered his poor father... and stammered nearly moribund:

"Oh babbo mio! se tu fossi qui!..."

"Oh, dear papa! if only you were here!..."

E non ebbe fiato per dir altro. Chiuse gli occhi, aprì la bocca, stiròe; le gambe e, dato un grande scrollone, rimase lì come intirizzito.

And he had breath to say no more. He shut his eyes, opened his mouth, stretched his legs and, having given a big shudder, he stood there as if numb with cold.
