THAT night Tom and Huck were ready for their adventure. They hung about the neighborhood of the tavern until after nine, one watching the alley at a distance and the other the tavern door. Nobody entered the alley or left it; nobody resembling the Spaniard entered or left the tavern door.

   QUELLA sera Tom e Huck erano pronti per la loro avventura. Gironzolarono nei paraggi dell'osteria fino a dopo le nove, l'uno sorvegliando il vicolo da lontano e l'altro la porta dell'osteria. The night promised to be a fair one; so Tom went home with the understanding that if a considerable degree of darkness came on, Huck was to come and «maow,» whereupon he would slip out and try the keys. But the night remained clear, and Huck closed his watch and retired to bed in an empty sugar hogshead about twelve.

La notte si annunciava bella; così Tom andò a casa con l'intesa che se l'oscurità fosse arrivata in abbondanza, Huck sarebbe venuto a «miagolare», al che egli sarebbe uscito di nascosto a provare le chiavi. Ma la notte restò chiara e Huck concluse il suo appostamento e verso le dodici andò a dormire in una botte da zucchero vuota.

   Tuesday the boys had the same ill luck. Also Wednesday. But Thursday night promised better. Tom slipped out in good season with his aunt's old tin lantern, and a large towel to blindfold it with. He hid the lantern in Huck's sugar hogshead and the watch began.

   Martedì i ragazzi ebbero la stessa sfortuna. Anche Mercoledì. Ma giovedì notte prometteva meglio. Tom sgattaiolò fuori a tempo debito con la vecchia lanterna di latta di sua zia e un grande asciugamano per bendarla. Nascose la lanterna nella botte da zucchero di Huck e la vigilanza incominciò.

An hour before midnight the tavern closed up and its lights (the only ones thereabouts) were put out. No Spaniard had been seen. Nobody had entered or left the alley. Everything was auspicious. The blackness of darkness reigned, the perfect stillness was interrupted only by occasional mutterings of distant thunder.

Un'ora prima di mezzanotte l'osteria chiuse e le sue luci (le uniche a quell'ora) furono spente. Non s'era visto nessuno spagnolo. Nessuno era entrato o uscito dal vicolo. Tutto prometteva bene. L'oscurità regnava pìcea, il silenzio perfetto era rotto soltanto dai brontolii occasionali di un tuono lontano.

   Tom got his lantern, lit it in the hogshead, wrapped it closely in the towel, and the two adventurers crept in the gloom toward the tavern. Huck stood sentry and Tom felt his way into the alley. Then there was a season of waiting anxiety that weighed upon Huck's spirits like a mountain. He began to wish he could see a flash from the lantern... it would frighten him, but it would at least tell him that Tom was alive yet.

   Tom prese la lanterna, l'accese nella botte, l'avvolse strettamente nell'asciugamano e i due avventurieri strisciarono nel buio verso l'osteria. Huck restò di sentinella e Tom si addentrò nel vicolo a tentoni. Poi ci fu un periodo di trepidante attesa che gravò sullo spirito di Huck come una montagna. Incominciava a desiderare di poter vedere un baleno dalla lanterna... lo avrebbe spaventato, ma almeno gli avrebbe detto che Tom era ancora vivo.

   It seemed hours since Tom had disappeared. Surely he must have fainted; maybe he was dead; maybe his heart had burst under terror and excitement. In his uneasiness Huck found himself drawing closer and closer to the alley; fearing all sorts of dreadful things, and momentarily expecting some catastrophe to happen that would take away his breath.

   Sembravano ore dacché Tom era sparito. Si- curamente doveva essere svenuto; forse era morto; forse gli era scoppiato il cuore dal terrore e dall'emozione. Nella sua inquietudine Huck si sorprese a avvicinarsi sempre di più al vicolo; temendo cose orrende di ogni genere e aspettandosi da un momento all'altro una catastrofe che gli avrebbe mozzato il respiro.

There was not much to take away, for he se- emed only able to inhale it by thimblefuls, and his heart would soon wear itself out, the way it was beating. Suddenly there was a flash of light and Tom came tearing by him:

   "Run!" said he; "run, for your life!"

   He needn't have repeated it; once was en- ough; Huck was making thirty or forty miles an hour before the repetition was uttered. The boys never stopped till they reached the shed of a deserted slaughter-house at the lower end of the village. Just as they got within its shelter the storm burst and the rain poured down. As soon as Tom got his breath he said:

   Non c'era bisogno di ripeterlo; una volta bas- tava; Huck stava già facendo cinquanta o sessanta chilometri all'ora prima che la ripetizione fosse pronunciata.    "Huck, it was awful! I tried two of the keys, just as soft as I could; but they seemed to make such a power of racket that I couldn't hardly get my breath I was so scared. They wouldn't turn in the lock, either. Well, without noticing what I was doing, I took hold of the knob, and open comes the door! It warn't locked! I hopped in, and shook off the towel, and, great Caesar's ghost!"

   "Huck, è stato orribile! Ho provato due delle chiavi, più piano che potevo; ma mi sembrava che facevano un rumore così forte che quasi quasi non ce la facevo a respirare dalla strizza che c'avevo. E nemmeno giravano dentro alla serratura. Be', senza nemmeno fa' caso a quello che facevo ho acchiappato la maniglia e la porta si è aperta! Non era chiusa a chiave! Sono zompato dentro e ho levato l'asciugamano e, per il fantasma del grande Cesare!"

   "What!... what'd you see, Tom?"

   "Che cosa!... che hai visto, Tom?"

   "Huck, I most stepped onto Injun Joe's hand!"

   "Huck, ho quasi inciampato sulla mano di Joe l'indiano!"

   "No!"

   "No!"

   "Yes! He was lying there, sound asleep on the floor, with his old patch on his eye and his arms spread out."

   "Lordy, what did you do? Did he wake up?"

   "No, never budged. Drunk, I reckon. I just grabbed that towel and started!"

   "I'd never 'a' thought of the towel, I bet!"

   "Well, I would. My aunt would make me mi- ghty sick if I lost it."

   "Be', io sì. Se lo perdevo mia zia mi mandava all'ospedale a forza di botte".

   "Say, Tom, did you see that box?"

   "Di', Tom, quella cassa l'hai vista?"

   "Huck, I didn't wait to look around. I didn't see the box, I didn't see the cross. I didn't see anything but a bottle and a tin cup on the floor by Injun Joe; yes, I saw two barrels and lots more bottles in the room. Don't you see, now, what's the matter with that ha'nted room?"

   "Huck, non mi sono fermato a guardare. Non ho visto né la cassa né la croce. Ho visto solo una bottiglia e una tazza di latta sul pavimento vicino a Joe l'indiano; sì, ho visto due barili e tante altre bottiglie nella stanza. Capisci, adesso che c'è che non va in quella stanza stregata?"

   "How?"

   "In che senso?"

   "Why, it's ha'nted with whiskey! Maybe all the Temperance Taverns have got a ha'nted room, hey, Huck?"

   "Ma come! È stregata dal whisky! Forse tutte le Taverne della Temperanza hanno una stanza stregata, eh, Huck?»

   "Well, I reckon maybe that's so. Who'd 'a' thought such a thing? But say, Tom, now's a mighty good time to get that box, if Injun Joe's drunk."

   "Be', mi sa che è proprio così. Chi se lo im- maginava? Ma di', Tom, adesso è un momento proprio buono per prenderci quella cassa, se Joe l'indiano è sbronzo".

   "It is, that! You try it!"

   "Buono un cavolo! Provaci tu!"

   Huck shuddered.

   Huck rabbrividì.

   "Well, no... I reckon not."

   "Be', no... penso che è meglio di no".

   "And I reckon not, Huck. Only one bottle alongside of Injun Joe ain't enough. If there'd been three, he'd be drunk enough and I'd do it."

   "Anche io penso che è meglio di no, Huck. Una bottiglia sola vicino a Joe l'indiano non basta. Se ce n'erano tre voleva dire che era bello imbriaco e allora lo facevo".

   There was a long pause for reflection, and then Tom said:

   Ci fu una lunga pausa di riflessione, e poi Tom disse:

   "Lookyhere, Huck, less not try that thing any more till we know Injun Joe's not in there. It's too scary. Now, if we watch every night, we'll be dead sure to see him go out, some time or other, and then we'll snatch that box quicker'n lightning."

   "Senti qua, Huck, non proviamoci più con questa cosa finché non siamo sicuri che Joe l'indiano dentro non ci sta. Mi fa troppa paura. Ma se stiamo di guardia tutte le notti, stiamo attenti a quando esce una volta o un'altra e poi gli freghiamo la cassetta più svelti di un fulmine".

   "Well, I'm agreed. I'll watch the whole night long, and I'll do it every night, too, if you'll do the other part of the job."

   "Be', a me mi va bene. Io faccio la guardia di notte, e la faccio tutte le notti se tu fai l'altra parte del lavoro".

   "All right, I will. All you got to do is to trot up Hooper Street a block and maow... and if I'm asleep, you throw some gravel at the window and that'll fetch me."

   "Va bene, la faccio. Tutto quello che devi fare tu è correre su Hooper Street per un isolato e miagolare... e se dormo mi tiri qualche breccola alla finestra e io mi sveglio".

   "Agreed, and good as wheat!"

   "D'accordo, affare fatto!"

   "Now, Huck, the storm's over, and I'll go home. It'll begin to be daylight in a couple of hours. You go back and watch that long, will you?"

   "E adesso che il temporale è finito, Huck, io vado a casa. Tra un paio d'ore incomincia a far giorno. Torna indietro e fai la guardia fino a quando fa giorno, va bene?"

   "I said I would, Tom, and I will. I'll ha'nt that tavern every night for a year! I'll sleep all day and I'll stand watch all night."

   "Ho detto che lo facevo, Tom, e lo farò. Sor- veglierò quell'osteria tutte le notti per un anno! Dormirò tutto il giorno e farò la guardia tutta la notte".

   "That's all right. Now, where you going to sleep?"

   "Così va bene. E mo' do' vai a dormire?"

   "In Ben Rogers' hayloft. He lets me, and so does his pap's nigger man, Uncle Jake. I tote water for Uncle Jake whenever he wants me to, and any time I ask him he gives me a little something to eat if he can spare it. That's a mighty good nigger, Tom. He likes me, becuz I don't ever act as if I was above him. Sometime I've set right down and eat with him. But you needn't tell that. A body's got to do things when he's awful hungry he wouldn't want to do as a steady thing."

   "Dentro al fienile di Ben Rogers. Lui mi ci fa stare, e pure il negro di suo padre, zio Jake. Io vado a prendere l'acqua per zio Jake quando lui me lo dice, e quando io glielo chiedo lui mi dà qualche cosa da mangiare se ce l'ha. Quello è un negro proprio buono, Tom. Io gli sto simpatico perché non faccio mai come se io sono superiore a lui. Qualche volta mi sono messo a tavola e ho mangiato insieme a lui. Ma questo non andarlo a raccontare. Quando uno c'ha fame deve fare cose che normalmente non dovrebbe fare".

   "Well, if I don't want you in the daytime, I'll let you sleep. I won't come bothering around. Any time you see something's up, in the night, just skip right around and maow."

   "Be', se di giorno non mi servi ti lascio dormi- re. Non verrò a disturbarti. Ma appena t'accorgi che di notte succede qualche cosa, vieni subito e miagola".
