HUCK said:

   "Tom, we can slope, if we can find a rope. The window ain't high from the ground."

   "Shucks! what do you want to slope for?"

   "Uffa! Perché vuoi filartela?"

   "Well, I ain't used to that kind of a crowd. I can't stand it. I ain't going down there, Tom."

   "Be', io non sono abituato a tutta quella gen- te. Non la sopporto. Io giù non ci vado, Tom".

   "Oh, bother! It ain't anything. I don't mind it a bit. I'll take care of you."

   "Oh, che cavolo! Non è niente. A me non mi da fastidio per niente. A te ci penso io".

   Sid appeared.

   Apparve Sid.

   "Tom," said he, "auntie has been waiting for you all the afternoon. Mary got your Sunday clothes ready, and everybody's been fretting about you. Say... ain't this grease and clay, on your clothes?"

   "Tom" disse, "zia ti ha aspettato tutto il pome- riggio. Mary ti aveva preparato i vestiti della domenica e erano tutti nervosi per te. Dì... ma non è unto e argilla quello che c'hai sui vestiti?"

   "Now, Mr. Siddy, you jist 'tend to your own business. What's all this blow-out about, anyway?"

   "Senti, signor Siddy, tu fatti i fatti tuoi. Ma per cos'è tutto questo andirivieni?"

   "It's one of the widow's parties that she's al- ways having. This time it's for the Welshman and his sons, on account of that scrape they helped her out of the other night. And say... I can tell you something, if you want to know."

   "È una delle feste della vedova che lei fa sempre. Stavolta è per il gallese e per i suoi figli, per via dei guai da cui l'hanno tirata fuori l'altra notte. E senti... posso dirti una cosa, se vuoi saperla".

   "Well, what?"

   "Be', che cosa?"

   "Why, old Mr. Jones is going to try to spring something on the people here to-night, but I overheard him tell auntie to-day about it, as a secret, but I reckon it's not much of a secret now. Everybody knows... the widow, too, for all she tries to let on she don't. Mr. Jones was bound Huck should be here... couldn't get along with his grand secret without Huck, you know!"

   "Ma come, il vecchio signor Jones proverà a fare una sorpresa alla gente qua stasera, ma io ho sentito che oggi lo diceva a zia, in segreto, ma io penso che ormai non è più tanto un segreto. Lo sanno tutti... pure la vedova, per quanto si sforza di far credere che non lo sa. Al signor Jones gli serviva che Huck stava qua... se mancava Huck il suo grande segreto andava a monte, hai capito!"

   "Secret about what, Sid?"

   "Segreto su che, Sid?"

   "About Huck tracking the robbers to the widow's. I reckon Mr. Jones was going to make a grand time over his surprise, but I bet you it will drop pretty flat."

   "Su Huck che ha seguito i ladri fino a casa della vedova. Io penso che il signor Jones voleva stupire tutti con la sua sorpresa, ma ci scommetto che fa cilecca".

   Sid chuckled in a very contented and satisfied way.

   Sid ridacchiò in modo molto contento e sod- disfatto.

   "Sid, was it you that told?"

   "Sid, l'hai raccontato te?"

   "Oh, never mind who it was. Somebody told... that's enough."

   "Oh, lascia perdere chi è stato. Qualcuno l'ha raccontato... e basta".

   "Sid, there's only one person in this town mean enough to do that, and that's you. If you had been in Huck's place you'd 'a' sneaked down the hill and never told anybody on the robbers. You can't do any but mean things, and you can't bear to see anybody praised for doing good ones. There... no thanks, as the widow says"... and Tom cuffed Sid's ears and helped him to the door with several kicks.

   "Sid, c'è solo uno in questa città abbastanza perfido da fare questo, e quello sei tu. Se tu stavi al posto di Huck te la svignavi giù per la collina e non dicevi niente a nessuno dei ladri. Sai solo capace di fare cattiverie, e quando qualcuno viene lodato per aver fatto una cosa buona non lo sopporti. Ecco... e niente grazie, come dice la vedova"... e Tom diede a Sid uno scappellotto e lo aiutò a raggiungere la porta con diverse pedate.

   "Now go and tell auntie if you dare... and to-morrow you'll catch it!"

   "E adesso va' a raccontarlo a zia se c'hai il coraggio... così poi domani ti gonfio!"

   Some minutes later the widow's guests were at the supper-table, and a dozen children were propped up at little side-tables in the same room, after the fashion of that country and that day. At the proper time Mr. Jones made his little speech, in which he thanked the widow for the honor she was doing himself and his sons, but said that there was another person whose modesty...

   Qualche minuto dopo gli ospiti della vedova erano a tavola per la cena, e una dozzina di bambini furono sistemati a tavoli più piccoli nella stessa stanza, secondo l'uso di quel paese e di quell'epoca. Al momento giusto il signor Jones fece il suo discorsetto, in cui ringraziò la vedova per l'onore che faceva a lui e ai suoi figlioli, ma disse che c'era un'altra persona la cui modestia...

   And so forth and so on. He sprung his secret about Huck's share in the adventure in the finest dramatic manner he was master of, but the surprise it occasioned was largely counterfeit and not as clamorous and effusive as it might have been under happier circumstances. However, the widow made a pretty fair show of astonishment, and heaped so many compliments and so much gratitude upon Huck that he almost forgot the nearly intolerable discomfort of his new clothes in the entirely intolerable discomfort of being set up as a target for everybody's gaze and everybody's laudations.

   Eccetera eccetera. Rivelò il suo segreto sul ruolo di Huck nell'avventura con la più alta drammaticità di cui fosse capace, ma la sorpresa che produsse fu largamente simulata e non clamorosa e espansiva come avrebbe potuto essere in circostanze più favorevoli. A ogni modo, la vedova fece bella mostra di stupefazione, e riversò su Huck sì tanti complimenti e sì tanta riconoscenza che egli quasi dimenticò la pressoché intollerabile scomodità del suo vestito nuovo nella scomodità assolutamente intollerabile di essere diventato il bersaglio degli sguardi e degli elogi di tutti.

   The widow said she meant to give Huck a home under her roof and have him educated; and that when she could spare the money she would start him in business in a modest way. Tom's chance was come. He said:

   La vedova disse che intendeva dare a Huck una casa sotto il suo tetto e dargli un'istruzione; e che quando avrebbe avuto i soldi lo avrebbe avviato al lavoro in un modo modesto. Era arrivato il momento di Tom. Egli disse:

   "Huck don't need it. Huck's rich."

   "A Huck non gli serve. Huck è ricco!"

   Nothing but a heavy strain upon the good manners of the company kept back the due and proper complimentary laugh at this pleasant joke. But the silence was a little awkward. Tom broke it:

   Solo un grande sforzo di buona educazione da parte della compagnia represse la dovuta e appropriata risata d'approvazione alla gradevole battuta. Ma il silenzio era un poco impacciato. Tom lo ruppe:

   "Huck's got money. Maybe you don't believe it, but he's got lots of it. Oh, you needn't smile... I reckon I can show you. You just wait a minute."

   "Huck c'ha i soldi. Forse non ci credete, ma ce n'ha un sacco. Oh, è inutile che sorridete... posso farvelo vedere. Aspettate un momento".

   Tom ran out of doors. The company looked at each other with a perplexed interest... and inquiringly at Huck, who was tongue-tied.

   Tom corse fuori. La compagnia si scambiò oc- chiate di perplesso interesse; poi volse uno sguardo indagatore su Huck, che era muto come un pesce.

   "Sid, what ails Tom?" said Aunt Polly. "He... well, there ain't ever any making of that boy out. I never..."

   "Sid, che gli è preso a Tom?" disse zia Polly. "È... be', non si riesce mai a capire quel ragazzo. Non potrò mai..."

   Tom entered, struggling with the weight of his sacks, and Aunt Polly did not finish her sentence. Tom poured the mass of yellow coin upon the table and said:

   Tom entrò, lottando col peso delle sacche, e zia Polly non finì la frase. Tom rovesciò la massa di monete gialle sulla tavola e disse:

   "There... what did I tell you? Half of it's Huck's and half of it's mine!"

   "Ecco... che cosa vi avevo detto? Metà è di Huck e metà è la mia!"

   The spectacle took the general breath away. All gazed, nobody spoke for a moment. Then there was a unanimous call for an explanation. Tom said he could furnish it, and he did. The tale was long, but brimful of interest. There was scarcely an interruption from any one to break the charm of its flow. When he had finished, Mr. Jones said:

   Lo spettacolo lasciò tutti senza fiato. Per un momento tutti osservarono, nessuno parlò. Poi ci fu l'unanime richiesta di una spiegazione. Tom disse che era in grado di fornirla, e la fornì. Il racconto fu lungo, ma pieno d'interesse. Nessuna interruzione intervenne a spezzarne l'incanto del flusso. Quand'ebbe finito, il signor Jones disse:

   "I thought I had fixed up a little surprise for this occasion, but it don't amount to anything now. This one makes it sing mighty small, I'm willing to allow."

   "Credevo di aver preparato una piccola sor- presa per quest'occasione, ma adesso vedo che non è un granché. Sono pronto a riconoscere che questa rende la mia una minuzia".

   The money was counted. The sum amounted to a little over twelve thousand dollars. It was more than any one present had ever seen at one time before, though several persons were there who were worth considerably more than that in property.

   Il denaro fu contato. La somma ammontava a poco più di dodicimila dollari. Era più di quanto ciascuno dei presenti avesse mai visto prima in una volta, anche se c'erano diverse persone con un patrimonio che valeva molto di più.
