ALDA MERINI (Milano 1931 - 2009) Scoperta giovanissima da Giacinto Spagnoletti; della sua opera si sono occupati, tra gli altri, Salvatore Quasimodo e Pier Paolo Pasolini. Il suo primo libro di poesie è del 1953. In seguito ha pubblicato libri fino al 1961. Dopo un ventennio segnato da malattia e manicomio riprende l'attività poetica. La sua lirica si distingue per densità visionaria e tensione erotico-religiosa. Premio Viareggio 1996 con La vita facile. Candidata al Premio Nobel per la Letteratura dall'Accademia di Francia nel 2001.

Her first book of poems dates back to 1953. Others followed, until 1961. Following two decades marked by sickness and mental institutions, she resumed her poetical activity. Her poetry is distinguished by visionary density and erotic-religious tension. 1996 Viareggio Award with The easy life. Accademia di Francia's Nobel Prize for Literature nominee in 2001.

Terra santa
Holy Land
Ho conosciuto Gerico,
I have known Jericho,
ho avuto anch'io la mia Palestina,
I too have had my Palestine,
le mura del manicomio
The walls of the home
erano le mura di Gerico
Were the walls of Jericho
e una pozza di acqua infettata
And a pool of infected water
ci ha battezzati tutti.
Has baptized us all.
Lì dentro eravamo ebrei
In there we were Hebrews
e i Farisei erano in alto
And the Pharisees up high
e c'era anche il Messia
And the Messiah was with us
confuso dentro la folla:
Confused within the throng:
un pazzo che urlava al Cielo
A touched crying out to Heaven
tutto il suo amore in Dio.
All of his love in God.

Noi tutti, branco di asceti
We all, pack of ascetics
eravamo come gli uccelli
Were of the birds the likes
e ogni tanto una rete
And obscure a net
oscura ci imprigionava

ma andavamo verso la messe,
But we were headed for the harvest,

e Cristo il Salvatore.

odoravamo di incenso.

E dopo, quando amavamo

Sono nata

Sono nata il ventuno a primavera
I was born in spring the twentyone
ma non sapevo che nascere folle,
Not knowing that to be born insane,
aprire le zolle
To open the turfs
potesse scatenar tempesta.
A tempest could unchain.
Così Proserpina lieve
And thus gentle Proserpina
vede piovere sulle erbe,
Sees rain fall upon the grasses,
sui grossi frumenti gentili
Upon the large gentle grains
e piange sempre la sera.
And always weeps at night.
Forse è la sua preghiera.

Spazio spazio io voglio, tanto spazio

per dolcissima muovermi ferita;

voglio spazio per cantare crescere

La cosa più superba è la notte
The superbest thing it is the night
quando cadono gli ultimi spaventi
When the last fears fall
e l'anima si getta all'avventura.
And the soul thrust itself into adventure.
Lui tace nel tuo grembo
He hushes in your womb
come riassorbito dal sangue
As if reabsorbed into the blood
che finalmente si colora di Dio
Which at last is hued of God
e tu preghi che taccia per sempre
And you pray that he forever hush
per non sentirlo come rigoglio fisso
Not to feel him as a fixed bloom

Penso che l'amore sia una grande torre
I think of love as being a great tower
una torre addormentata nel cuore della notte.
A sleeping tower in the dead of night.
Ma questi giganti che ormai non parlano più
But these giants who forever will be silent
hanno sepolto sotto le loro macerie
Have entombed beneath their rubbles
